I've use all of the different chrome paints and Molotow is a winner for me. I don't even use a gloss black base coat and thin it ever so slightly with a lacquer thinners. The results are truly amazing and it's almost like chrome plating. The trick with Molotow is lots of light coats till the chrome look is achieved and let it flash off for a good 2 weeks. If I could upload a pic, you would be amazed at how chrome the finish is.

If Molotow works well for you then that is great! These chromes cure much faster than Molotow.

Do you have any experience with green stuff world's black gloss primer? Does it have a mirror finish or not quite?

It has a good gloss. I generally use Tamiya acrylic X1 gloss black as I have been successful using it for years. Try a couple and see which you like the best for basing before chrome. Remember that the best finish depends on how smooth your original base material is.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I have a Pocher Rolls Royce that I bought from Harrods in 1993 ! It wasnt until I watched this that I had the confidence to spray the extensive number and size of the chrome panels. I achieved an amazing result using Alclad and am so grateful for your guidance, especially the bit about rubbing down at the end of the process. As usual 1 panel needs to go back to the start but my mistake. Many thanks for the guidance.

Thank you for watching and glad it was helpful! I would love to see your Rolls when it is finished.

Ive just tried the green stuff world chrome and it looks good but rubs off really easily, not sure what im doing wrong but i see you were able to rub it with your thumb no problem. it just comes off like a dry powder leaving a dull silver colour

These chromes will rub off with handling and become a dull silver. I have had some success top coating with a water based clear such as Deluxe Materials Looks Like Glass but the lustre will drop a little.

Alclad is usually a lot more mirror chrome than this. These chromes etch base coats leaving the satin finish. Alclad works much better over a 2 pack base coat or directly over plastic.

Yes, Alclad can be more mirror. It depends on how good the prep work is.

🤔 ive seen Green Stuff airbrush chrome on several channels and it looks much more mirror like than your tests. Not understanding.

The mirror finish is very good with the Green Stuff airbrush Chrome. My overhead camera has a very narrow depth of field that gives the impression that my finish is not as reflective as it really is.

what would the end result look like if you didn't do the gloss black coating first and just sprayed over white??
@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne

Over white the chrome looks more like polished aluminium. It loses the high contrast in the reflections.

I'm testing the brush version of Green Stuff World chrome VIA airbrush, someone on youtube got a great chrome result on a car kit, i did a test but i think i did something wrong, got tiny bubbles in the chrome for some reason. That person recommended 6-1 thinning ratio( i used 10-5), thinning with GSW acrylic thinner(i used IPA), 12 PSI( i used 19). These and prob other ones affected the result, chrome is the hardest paint to get right, i hope you can make an in depth video on airbrushing the brush version.

For airbrushing I think the GSW Airbrush version works best, straight from the bottle at low psi. The brush version gives an amazing mirror look for brushing but is not as durable as it tarnishes when touched.

Hearns Hobbies The brush version get better after letting it cure a couple of days. The reason I’m interested in the brush version is because it doesn’t require a black base, we’re all searching for the perfect chrome u guess.

How durable is this for exterior auto use?

As we don't use this finish for exterior use I couldn't say. Please try some and let us know.

These are 'silver' not true chrome. The answer is Revell Chrom (Chrome) Spray. Effortless, perfect, true mirror finish. You can literally read text reflected in it or tell how many fingers you hold up in front of any painted subject. Doesn't matter if you prime or not. Gloss primer, matte primer, bare plastic: works like freaky magic. Not inexpensive by any means but if you want a flawless, true mirror finish without an airbrush, sanding/polishing, without primer, etc. this will be your new miracle paint.
