Thanks for the video. I have Tamiya X-20A Thinner and Tamiya Laqcuer Thinner but i dont have the Isopropil alcohol 😢 do you know if i can use one of those two thinners without the alcohol? Saludos from Mexico Homie
Hi, you have said to use Enamel thinner in the video, but I would think what is needed is lacquer thinner or cellulose thinner. Most Enamel thinners are like white spirit and won't have any effect on vinyl decals.
Enamel thinners are similar to cellulose and lacquer thinners. As you can see in the video, they work on model decals, which, as far as I know, are not vinyl decals.
@@BudgetModeller HI thanks for your reply. I've always thought that water slide decals were vinyl based and I've heard others say this also, but I accept that this could be incorrect. The enamel thinners that I have used (ammo, AK etc..) are either white spirit or turpentine based products which won't effect decals which is why they're safe to use over acrylic paint etc... The stronger brand name solutions I've used such as ammo have a distinct lacquer thinner/acetone type smell.
@@BudgetModeller Hi, I went ahead and made up some test solutions one with 20% Ammo enamel thinner and one with 20% Tamiya lacquer thinner. The results were what I expected, the Enamel thinner worked about as well as Micro Sol due to the IPA content and the Lacquer thinner worked just like in your video. Maybe there's a loss in translation going on (I'm in the UK) and the products differ in our regions. Hope this is of help to someone.
@@ste022 I’m in the UK too. I use Cellulose Thinners from Lidl’s which is £5 for a litre. It works the same as enamel thinners 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks for this 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@@BudgetModeller oh is it equivalent to micro set mixed with micro sol?👌, and when should use top coat after using this solution? Before or after? is it ok if I use enamel thinner from a non model kit tool brand ?
@@batharaampera2283 Yes, the equivalent to Micro Set and Sol. Personally I decal before I varnish, but it’s down to your preference. Any enamel thinners works 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
He says Enamel thinner in the video, but I think what you actually need is lacquer thinner or cellulose thinner. Most Enamel thinners are like white spirit and won't have any effect on vinyl decals.
@@BudgetModeller do you mean how do i found the video ?Well im student on budget and i forgot to buy decal softener so i searched for Homemade decal softener and there was your video
Great vid...Always looking for DIY tricks to lower the price of modelling...To be fair we are suppose to be modellers so using tricks like this and scratch building should be in our arsenal...shouldn't it?...Big thanks for the vid....I'd love to know how you worked this out or found out how to make the solution...
Thanks Lewis, really appreciate the kind comments. Don’t laugh, I sniffed the empty bottle! I thought it smelt of vinegar, but I couldn’t recreate the effect. I thought, ‘What else does that to decals?’ I’d previously dripped a drop of thinners on a decal sheet by accident and watched in horror as the decals shrivelled up! I have a few spare sheets now, so I tested different strengths on my mule and found this strength to be the best 👍👍👍
Cant wait to try this tomorrow. Im on a budget since i spent way too much on modellong colors and acessories. I bought revell decal soft and its of no use....revell is a horrible brand. I have a question..im new to decals...what is the difference between diy vinegar/water and your isopropyle alcohol with white spirit? What is decal soft decal fit and decal set? I replayed your vid 3 times to get sm details 😂
Hi, thanks, let me know how you get on 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 DIY vinegar and distilled water is for setting decals. This stops the ’silvering’ of decals. (Decal Set) Enamel thinners and distilled water ‘melts’ the decal slightly, allowing it to drop into all the cracks. (Decal Sol)
Will try, brilliant. The result is superb. I just bought Tamiya Mark fit strong and it´s kinda worse than Revell decal soft in side to side comparison. Can I use 99% Ipa for this? Thank you.
MATE thats twice youve helped in this one video, brilliant going to order a hot wax melt for decals now lol Also the enamel thinners is that proper enamel thinners white spirit methylated spirit or lighter fluid lol
Hi Mate. Could I kindly ask you to write the names on the two componentes for DIY decal softner. I have seen your video a lot of times but have difficulties hearing the name on the first component. I think the second is Isopropyl acohol. Also have you experienced how it works on different decalpaper than the Microscale. Best regards John
Thanks a lot for your quick and kind reply. I will at once try to se how it works on other types of decal paper. I am in the situation where I can print my own decals even with white letters and images - using "Ghost White Toner" onmy lazer printer.
hello friend, can you use another type of alcohol? In my city it is difficult to get ipa alcohol, I tried ethyl alcohol but it does not mix with thinner, thanks
Hi Dee, sorry for late reply, I'm working on my OU Degree. I haven't tested it straight on to acrylic paint, but I have tested it on acrylic gloss, and it works perfectly fine. It also works perfectly well on clear parts too...I did a live test on a freinds channel and it was perfect. Any other questions please drop me a line. Thanks, TBM.
Champ decal solution is by far the best I've ever used. Unfortunately, they don't make it anymore. How does the alcohol and thinner work with the paint? Does it hurt it?
