[-TUTORIAL-] Rear Dig Mod on Redcat Rockslide RS10 XT (Cheap!)

This is a cheap way to setup a rear dig system on a Redcat Rockslide RS10 XT 1/10 Scale Crawler. I have tried this with the radio that comes with the Redcat and it doesn't work very well. Any 3 channel radio with a two position auxiliary will work just fine.
Parts Needed:
Servo: Any servo you can get to fit. (I used a micro servo Hitec HS-85BB) $20
Micro switch: SPDT Switch with 3/4" Roller Lever Model: 275-017 $3.19
Wire: About 3 inches 12 Gauge. I used Deans Wet Noodle $0.28 per inch $0.84
My Total cost to install Rear Dig was about 24 Dollars.
If you have a working servo this build could cost as little as $4! (if the one you took off the back hadn't stripped out yet you could use it)
Thanks for stopping more RS10 mods to come!

GENIUS idea!!!! I know it's an older video, BUT still!!!

Greg Johnson, haha thanks! I stumbled across this idea because I was trying to roll it when the motors were unplugged and it wouldn’t roll. I noticed that the wires was touching coming off one of the motors. I went looking for a switch because I knew I there had to be one. My rock crawling buddies would make fun of my rear steering and this fixed that. The micro switch does wear out over time but they are cheap. This made my redcat competition ready and it had no trouble keeping up with the big boys. I always ran the stock body just to rub it in. Wish this was a better video for you.

Thanks for the video. I'm new to the RC car world. I've been flying plane's and heli's. I get most of my servos from headsuprc. You can getthem most places for less then 5 bucks. A 9g servo for about 3.

I did the same dig setup with an SPDT switch but I built a second receiver/transmitter that mounts to my existing transmitter now I have five channels so no loss of 4ws and I have a front and rear dig. I'll be doing a video about how I did it soon so stay tuned. Check out my rs10 xt videos. Great job man!

Definitely. I've had the video on the back burner lately but I'll get it done soon to show what I did to get a dig on this bad boy. Feel free to subscribe and get notifications for when I post new content. Keep crawlin!

so just a little tip when cutting plastic. heat the knife you plan to use until hot, then cut, like a hot knife through butter.

You need 4 channel if you want to keep 4ws. Original 3 channel remote is set up to run rear steering on the 3rd channel, so it's always tied to the steering, so that's a NO GO for the rear dig. I'd recommend putting the battery at the lower level, and try to put the servo/switch combo at the top level. You can buy the cheapest servo for this task, its only duty is to flip the switch.

The main advantage for dig vs 4ws is to climb over steep hills. Use front tires only at first to dig.

This setup may not last very long . The ao1 switch is rated at a max amp rating of 5 amps @ 125-250 volts . To increase life span of the circuit the ao1 should control a relay not the motor . Also there can be voltage drop to the rear motor because of the low amp rating of the ao1 switch . Nice circuit just needs higher amp potential that a relay can provide .

2x4 Barrels interesting. That’s good to know. It’s been 7 years now and it still works. I don’t run it much anymore though.

What a "dig" does it locks the rearend from turning so you turn sharp and pivot on the rear wheels

I'm about to buy a Redcat RS 10, so was quite impressed whit the easy & cheap dig mod; however is you use a Spektrum 3C, how can you use 4WS? On the video I can't see your rear wheel steering; is this the sacrifice you have to make for the dig? Sorry if this questions seems dumb, but I've never driven/owned a crawler ...
@999benhonda
@999benhonda 10 лет назад
why a dig? cause the 4ws was removed. why remove 4ws? some don't like it....some don't think it looks "scale". some rs10 owners like to do a custom chassis and a truck body and 4ws will usually rub really bad. So a dig setup can give back some of that tight turning lost when the 4ws is removed. And some compititions don't allow 4ws but will allow a dig.

Thx for the mod share. I recently got a Rockslide to add to my RC chest, this being my first crawler. Question for you, if you have a few; is the weak point on these the linkage from the body to the axle? More specifically, the plastic ends? I've already busted up a couple just doing some light crawling and no hard crashes. Thx!

Sweet! You're welcome! What did your total cost for the dig mod end up at?

Cool vid but all that work and talk about mounting your elecs low for lower center of gravity, and then you mount that heavy lipo up top...does not make sense, seems to me the lipo is heavier than the elctronics.

+jammer2150 // Many rc crawler position the lipo as close to the steering servo to have weight forward of the chassis like he just did. Good video

+Joselito Pancho Hi Jose, thanks for the reply, I have recently just started to get into crawling and trailing, and am getting a better idea of why electronics are laid out in an rc vehicle, vs a year a go when I posted the question. : )
@pretol1
@pretol1 6 лет назад
he's not talking about forward, he's talking about LOWER. There's a lower level in that chassis, and the lipo should have gone THERE, and then it should be moved as far forward as possible. These are no exclusive concepts.

I don’t remember for sure. I got that switch at one of the last RadioShacks. I would go for the higher amp switch (if it fits) because that switch did fail and I had to replace it.
