When fitting brake levers on mine I put on dry with a little brass ring over the handle to form more detail. Always paint your parts first or weather them etc , good to weight them down too and I never use those couplings , all my models are fully fitted trains only problem is when I want to change the loco it’s a bit of a process with uncoupling needles I’ve made. I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to detail. But I love originality. I even put cargo plates on my wagons and sometimes old labels ripped in half as if been torn off etc ….eeeeee the joys of modelling

Parkside Dundas wagon kits are worth looking at as well. I have built loads of their vans and the detail is much better than the dapol. There is a wide variety of wagons too

I might need to get one over the pond. Now a nice thing with weights is when they are disguised as freight or cargo inside!

Very useful video. I have been building a Palvan kit but didn't have my preferred 2p coins for weight. It has therefore cost me three 20p coins glued onto the floor !!!! Weight is essential for smooth running. Thanks for the video

I have to say thank you for an excellent vid, I have found four mineral wagons and a van in box I’ve had on the top shelf in my ‘office’ for years. Perfect timing!

Airgun pellets are handy for adding weights, I used them a lot on N Gauge goods stock and it did improve the running and the coupling.

Thanks for inspiring...I’ve quite a few kits like these but all in the storage box....never seem to get enough time always doing other stuff on the layout.....

I built some of these last year (review on my channel) and found that they're not bad kits. The only thing I noticed is that the coupling bar can be too rigid and cause derailments, coming up with a way of making them rotate slightly could help with going round corners

I just finished assembling one of these I bought before christmas. It took a while because I'd made a mistake and needed some plasticard to fix it. A dash of plasticard, some loose cardboard, and a couple of 2p coins, and my first-ever kit-built wagon is done (minus paint anyway). I've never felt so satisfied and it seems to run nicely on the track. I gave it a fair bit of weight, too!

I used to bang kits together like this when I was a child. I did soon learn to apply cement with a pin, though, rather than squeeze it on directly from the tube. Nowadays I use liquid poly applied with a brush. Just tape the parts together and run a small amount of liquid poly along the inside seam and let capillary action do the rest. It's much neater - and it ensures the parts fit together correctly before applying glue to them!

Sadly the fumes make me ill!

I find the Revell applicator with the thin metal tube to be the most useful way of applying liquid poly

I would suggest fitting brass taper bearings in the axleboxes ( a very simple task ) to improve the free running & prevent the pin point axles wearing through the plastic
@gppsoftware

I fill the bearings with vaselene. Some of my Airfix/Dapol kits are still running 30 years on after this treatment as good as the day I did them.

Ha ha. Tube cement! ;-) I remember struggling with that stuff many moons ago. As discussed in your previous video, with individual wagons coming in north of £10-£15, these kits are a great alternative. I will be giving them a try at some point - particularly as I like to model doors open where possible. Great video.

They are potentially a good option, wagons are so expensive now given you need six plus to make a decent looking consist

I’ve built about 3 of the “presflo” wagons by Dapol. They are fiddly but worth the money. Although I think there should be a pre-painted version.

Would have fitted some brass 'top hat' 2mm bearings. Use a 2.1 mm drill bit for the body of bearing and a 3.5mm bit to countersink the bearings rim so it is flush with back of the plastic.W iron.

Possibly a stupid question but i have tried without much success to find out do you get any transfers in these Kits its not in my opinion just to paint and weather these models it's the little detail number and the weights descriptions in the corners or are they available else where

They are good kits to build, same with the coaches kit that dapol sell not as good quality as the ready to run coaches but I think there like £12 a coach they don't look that bad after a bit of weathering, the way things are going with pricing people will start to turn to these kits as you said they are cost effective as you can get 2 wagons or coaches for the value of a ready to run wagon or coach, will look forward to next week's video on this getting painted... cheers Beeton hough junction (Dave C)

@BeetonHoughJunction 6 лет назад
Budget Model Railways i have two of them coaches, at the time i bought them ready to run coaches were only £4/£5 more but now with them coaches being £45+ and plastic kit coaches being at £12 or there abouts you can get 3/4 coaches to the price of 1, I haven't been to dapol for awhile so the stock of them may have changed but yea not bad for the price when you give them a bit of weathering

The fumes of solvent make me I'll so I can't use it
@gppsoftware
@gppsoftware 2 года назад
@@BudgetModelRailways yes, 'old technology' products have the problem of fumes! Try 'Plastic Magic' by Delux Materials, Bramley, Hants, UK. My local model shop here in Sydney Australia stock it and recommended it to me as they didn't have any of the well know solvents, MEK etc. Since I purchased mine, I've seen a few more adverts for it and I've seen it in other model shops so it is more common now. To be honest, I was sceptical about it as I had never heard of it. I gave it a go and never looked back. It is odourless/no fumes and it has the benefit of being able to glue normal polystyrene plastics and ABS. It is really good stuff. I have no connection with the product other than as a satisfied customer. I would strongly recommend you use something like this over tube-glue because tube-glue just creates globules everywhere and really doesn't give a good finish. Just a tip.
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 2 года назад
@@gppsoftware thanks for the heads up I will look out for it. I've switched to super glue but it's not ideal, so this could be the answer thanks
@gppsoftware
@gppsoftware 2 года назад
@@BudgetModelRailways 'Super Glue' as in the cyno stuff is probably even less appropriate to building plastic kits than tube-glue! Having said that, I do use super glue for gluing metal parts to plastic kits and for securing very small parts which might break off easily. I use a tip of wire (like a pin) to place tiny droplets where needed. It really isn't meant to be used for plastic kits. It's awful stuff to work with, especially if you get it on your fingers'! And it has nasty fumes. Try 'Plastic Magic' and the job will be a whole lot easier.

I don't know if you reply to old videos, but I must admit, I'm tempted to get the lowmac kits, however, I doubt I'll have a load on them all the time so I'm not sure if there will be enough weight to stop it derailing... Also on a sidenote, I'm seeing unpainted dapol wagons a pound cheaper than the prices of kits now, are they worth it? I'm worried it'll to be awkward painting the body without getting the frames covered in paint...
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 2 года назад
It might be possible to add weight under the body, but I'm not familiar with the lomac kit so couldn't say for sure. I think it would be pretty tricky to paint completed ones neatly, hope this helps

If you have a 3d printer, or buy a cheap one, you could just print the pieces. I've seen bodies and chassis in 009 on thingiverse and they probably have them in HO/OO as well. If you wanted metal wheels, you could buy packs of wheels. Alternatively, you could print wheels out of black or gray pla.

I find that Hornby wagon wheels are a good replacement for Dapol wheels because Hornby wheels are properly profiled whereas Dapol's are not and don't run very well.

Buy decent wheels, 3d printed out of pla or something else you can't get the precision of a metal wheel .

I tried N, but found everything as, if not more, expensive even second hand I'm afraid. Also shunting does not work well which I enjoy. That's why I came up with the idea of the round and round layout in OO that's the same size as N gauge.

You used way to much glue for the roof. The ends, and 1/4 of each wall section needed glue to old up the roof and be sturdy. Of course I built 40ft and 50ft ho scale boxcars and the surface area is way larger.
