I love the way you explained the purpose and how to use tracing. You always hear and see everywhere that "tracing" is bad, but it makes so many starting artists think they should never do anything that looks like tracing. It is indeed such a good way to learn how to understand the shape of a drawing and how to build everything. Of course, do not trace art and claim it as your own, but tracing to practice and train your shape knowledge is something everyone should be doing.
@Miraihi
@Miraihi 2 месяца назад
Tracing is good as long as you do so mindfully and for practice. There may be more or less useful types of practice, but they are never really bad for you. Also a whole lot of professional artists use 3D models to reference difficult poses. They can't allow themselves to waste time experimenting, so they essentially trace for the sketch.
@anapple6912

i keep seeing people say how tracing isnt all that bad unless you claim you drew it.

the cube stuff is so true it's genuinely insane. im a beginner, i wasn't happy with how "flat" my stuff looked so i started to just spam cubes and blobs with form in perspective and after like a week my skills literally skyrocketed. I'm by no means genuinely good yet but the difference having even a small understanding of 3d space made is actually crazy. My favorite way to practice form & basic shapes is to draw a blob and then show how it bends and conforms to perspective using lines that trace the 3d "surface" of the blob. Also stacking squares gets boring so try making square mannequins, a rectangle for the ribcage, a cylinder for the waist and another rectangle for the pelvis.
@JRTO_X

NTS: 1. Master the art of drawing basic shapes at any angle/perspective 2. Be able to break down a reference of choice into its basic shapes curves and lines 3. Be able to trace

I don't remember who said this, but someone said that for something to be an art style and not a mistake, it has to be that way consistently. I find that really helpful and I just wanted to share it here.

The 'focusing on the curves' thing for tracing is actually such a great way of putting it! I feel like when people talk about 'good tracing' they try to make that point, but you put it in such a way thats so clear and great for using it on other artstyles!

This is true because usually people are so fixated on anatomy that they tend to forget about simplifying shapes. I mostly taught the kids where I worked that it is easier to use shapes to make a character like in cartoons, video games or anything than to do it the hard way. When I was young, I tend to take a image, usually a picture of the character I want to draw, open a drawing tool like Paint and use the shapes on top of the image to break down the character so I can make it on paper just by seeing how everything works

Omg I wanna slam my face into the desk. I had NO CLUE there was such an easy way to swap between variations in your art. I have desperately needed something like these layer comps 😭 EDIT: Turns out it is a 3.0 feature, and fairly new, but I still use 1.0 because screw upgrading to those later versions 😂

If you have photoshop or other software that supports animations, you can do it in animation frames too. You don't actually need to animate anything, but most software of this type that has animations remember layers visibility as part of animation frames, so you can just use that.

Use folders! Put all your layers in a folder, duplicate the folder, edit it in one folder. It serves the same function pretty much, but does require more layers

I'm not going to lie. This has really opened my eyes to a different (better) perspective of anatomy. Coming from a person who poured over books on realistic proportions and anatomy I can say this video has done more for me (in terms of explaining things in a more simplified and easy to understand way) than I could have ever asked for. Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!!

The use of simple lines and being able to trace is the most powerful tool you taught me today. I usually learn to shape from structure and my memory of complete shapes. But, when you explained how to use simple lines, I the realized that I kinda remember those shapes in these simple lines. Learning how to describe it really has a lot of value to it.

I think this is one of the best videos on anatomy on RU-vid right now. And I spend a lot of time watching art videos on RU-vid. The distinction you made about what really is anatomy and what is another aspect of art's language. I've been doing art professionally for around 15 years and this is the first time I hear another person saying this. The way it's usually taught is flawed because it's a variation of "You have to learn real anatomy to modify it later". I think the problem with this approach is that if it was truth, it would also work the other way around: people would be able to learn "real anatomy" from exaggerated anatomy. The thing is that if it was the case, you would not run into the foreshortening issue you mentioned in one style and not in the other, which is the case. So great job putting this into words. Thank you for making this video.

This is how I ended up teaching myself due to not being able to visualize stuff in my head. I didn't realise it was an actual process! That's so cool. Learning this way (with shapes and paying attention to basic curves) is so good for drawing ANYTHING. I was always intimidated by "backgrounds" because it was impossible for me to hold an image in my head long enough, so I was basically just trapped to eyeballing references and hoping they fit my perspective (they normally didn't and all that old art looks so wonky now). But after I started studying this way, I am now able to draw in depth environments on my own. I can't stress enough how much I love this way of learning art!

I have never been able to mentally break down living things like people and animals into basic shades. This has always held me back in art and even in using tutorials. I get the whole "spheres for joints, cylinders for limbs" etc stuff but no matter how many times I try it, it just doesn't work out and even when I can get something out of it, my art ends up very sterile looking since I can't build off of the base better. I've been trying to brush up on the basics to fix my perspective issues. Thankfully I have a really good grasp on anatomy as well as light and shadow. I've also always been good with the fluidity of plants. In fact, I used that to improve my art of people and animals once I quick adhering strictly to anatomy. Organic things definitely don't have to be anywhere near as strict as inanimate objects (and even those can be stylized). But my perspective. Phew. Perhaps I'll try drawing the shapes over my current art and use that the fix my perspective. Thanks for the informative video!

Thank you for making this video. ❤ I struggled with form and how to make my proportions accurate and consistent. I've had this problem for a while and many other videos were giving vague ideas on how to tackle it. I knew that I could nail a pose, and not know ANYTHING about anatomy, as long as I followed the reference, and it displeased me. I planned to do commissions but doubt I could satisfy the customers I would have gotten if I didn't get anatomy, poses and form down correctly. I struggled to find a suitable video for me that made steps clear on how to properly set up a base reference with foreshortened simple shapes, how to ignore the small, insignificant curves at first and focus on the bigger picture, but yours did just that. So thank you, you have helped a fellow artist. ❤😊

I actually agree with the bit in the beginning. With so many art styles and different ways of doing stuff no ones art is every bad, some may need a bit of adjusting to help with what they are trying to do but but there is no wrong way to draw. Before i started getting into drawing id watch anime and stuff but never really consider anything about the stule or proportions, so id watch it and think everything looked normal. But after awhile i started observing the animation and style way more and noticing stuff like how the eyes positions may look really weird when your really taking a look at it but when your just watching it it never really occurs. Like certain mistakes or the slight offset of a body part may be super obvious to you as an artist, but someone else just looking at it for the first time wont even notice the features you thought were so obvious at first. The biggest thing is simply confidence. Like bob ross says they arent mistakes but happy little accidents, that can give personality to your own creation.

Drawing people has gotten so much easier now that I draw the body in shapes. I’ve drawn a front, back, and side facing base all because I used references, references has helped me so much and I’ve improved a lot, my art still needs improving tho cause I’m not great with making the eyes nose mouth & hair.

This video is great for teaching artist how to use references but I think it is still great to learn anatomy cause it gives you 100% accuracy on how long or were Somthing should be on the body. I also think people are thinking anatomy is harder than it is and will do every shape\ pose tutorial just to avoid it😂(Bro literally says he don’t know how the elbow looks like 17:02)if you study anatomy you won’t have to guess things like that.

ive honestly taken to saying that anatomy is less about actually *being* accurate, and more about *looking* accurate. ive made legitimate stylistic choices on purpose and been told my anatomy was bad and i shouldnt hide behind my style (it was! a genuine choice! that i made on purpose! i cannot stress that enough!), ive referenced off of positions my body could make and been told my anatomy was bad and i needed to use a reference, etc.... i DONT have a perfect understanding of how human anatomy is. i make shit up for the hands and feet, i bullshit my poses. a lot of what i do isn't really calculated or really even measured, but i get so many compliments on my anatomy and, god, especially my hands and feet. its the biggest example i have of making things believeable rather than strictly accurate. i remember talking about this before, and people got really mad about it and told me im wrong and i shouldnt give such bad advice. now i've got a video i can show that explains my point better than i can!

Actually yeah, when I started out digital art I drew for a few months without tracing, then for personal fanart, i wanted to have a specific style so i did the tracing study. I put it side by side to copy it to see if i can replicate it, but it looked off. So I traced it and noticed what I did wrong then I took the ref away and then copied side by side to see what I learned I don't trace these days because I didn't need it but it did improve my drawing a lot that I am considering doing that study again

One of the other issues art books and tutorials that generally cover the basics of anatomy is that they never cover how to actually apply that understanding to a final piece. Especially with the ones where the focus is something like the musculature of the skull of humans and drawing those correctly without the skin of the character, but in general they tend to be very detailed about how to do the thing on its own and don't include examples of the understanding in use.
