You don't have to be a Seven Day Adventist or even religious to admire a man sticking to his principles. I only learned about Desmond yesterday and I'm glad I did.
He was abused in training...called vile names and teased over and over. He touched no weapon. He carried a med kit, a red cross on his helmet. He saved the lives of so so many men. This is real Christ like example. If he'd have been sent out of the military, so many men would've died alone on that ridge never to return home.
Why would they disrespect a doctor like that do not value human life at all even their own? I think that just shows the demand for conformity do what we are doing do as you are told even if you are meant for greater things?
@@AnnaLVajda during the time the idea in america was you were fighting tyranny for freedom. Remember the united states was attacked. And boys of fighting age who refused to fight back were seen as cowards undeserving of their freedom that so many had died for before. Not willing to shoot the people who wanted to kill him and take his freedom was seen as weakness. Their opinion greatly changed when they saw what he was willing to do for them and his country. So much so that the lieutenant personally asked doss on his sabbath if he would go up on the ridge again with the few remaining men that were with him at the start of the attack that could still fight. They wouldnt go back up without him. And he went.
Yup, that dude who flogged dozens of people with a whip in a temple and forced them out and ordered his disciples to arm themselves with weapons for self defense, *love* that dude. 😂
I met him years ago at a Medal of Honor banquet I was working at. He was revered even among the other medal recipients. Hell of a nice guy, he shook all of our hands.
How incredible! What year was this? Since he died in 2006 I never met the man (I, born in2004) only recently started learning about his heroics after a spark of interest when I got around to watching the movie of his time in hacksawridge Makes me like my birth state Virginia a bit more for having been the place a great hero was raised
@@ExpressoBean0 I’m glad to see the younger generation being interested in the actions of our war heroes in world war 2. I met a man named Glenn D. Frazier handing out his book “hell’s guest” detailing his time in service in WW2 at the USS Alabama. He was there for the attack on Pearl Harbor and became a prisoner of war to the Japanese. His book was so inspiring to me and got me interested in WW2 at the age of 12. Unfortunately Glenn died in 2018 but all proceeds from his book continue to go to his family. I would highly recommend picking up a copy of Hell’s Guest and giving it a read or two.
In 1962 President Kennedy held a small ceremony for then living CMH recipients from each war/conflict. Only one was invited from each war, and that individual had to be voted to attend by his fellow CMH recipients. Doss was unanimously voted by all his fellow WW2 CMH recipients. I recommend reading The Unlikeliest Hero (Booton Herndon, 1967).
I am moved to an in my heart decision by hearing and seeing the Faith of this man in action. Truly amazing. Sadly, today we in the population stood by as military conscientious objectors to receiving the nRNA laced vaccines were forced out of our military. Many strong willed conscientious military personnel were forced to leave the military when standard non RNA vaccines WERE AVAILABLE but not made available…. It never was about health but power and control…. We let it happen…..
Am British and ex military and we always say where better than the US and banter back and forth, but hands down I would say this man is one of the bravest if not The bravest men to ever live. They should've bought him his land and let him live tax free for what he did. Outstanding I wouldn't have the guts to go into war without a weapon I salute you sir and hope you have your peace in heaven.
This is beautiful to see. I tend to have negative views toward religion for personal reasons, but Pvt. Doss reminds me that there are people out there who are truly Chirist-like. Desmond and the rest of history deserve to be remembered, and he deserved all these gifts and more. I just hope he had a good, fulfilling life.
Just watched Hacksaw Ridge....had to learn more about this amazing hero. What a great follow up to see him reunite with some of his fellow solders. Hero through and through.
I know this comment it old but I met a man just like him, never spent a penny on himself while I served with him for years. While he was Infantry so required to carry Arms he never once loaded it in combat. Instead he offered do everything. Man worked or read his bible and nothing else. Saved every dollar and after the service he built his church a tornado shelter. Since he never fired a shot or ever got angry, we nicknamed him Miller the fence killer! (he had poor driving skills sadly)
I stood on that escarpment and Doss is right, 30-40 feet high in that place. In 2018 we took Dad there to pay tribute to his brother, my uncle, who died in battle at that place. A very emotional and tearful experience. God bless all those who fought there.
if you don't believe in miracles you should find the guy that had a beat on desmond and every time he pulled the trigger it jammed, or ask his war buddies about desmond standing at the top of the cliff and not one enemy fire, but anytime other men got to the top they were shot down, I did say he was standing not crawling!
As a Seventh Day Adventist my self I feel really proud of this Man. Just like Daniel and the 3 Hebrews in Babylon decided to honor God in everything they did, Desmond Doss did the same. God honored this man with the highest military award the country can bestow, and also in live television. When we decide to honor God and obey him no matter the consequences.. He rewards his servants. God bless you all.
Dude.. thank you SO MUCH for putting this together and posting it!! I feel so privileged to watch this. I especially liked watching how excited Doss was when he saw his comrades he served with come in. He didn't smile when the announcer is calling him a hero. But when he saw the men he served with, he completely lights up! It's so touching to see! I also really enjoyed watching the advertisements that you left in. Those were so interesting to me to watch. So much changes, so much stays the same. Seriously, thank you so so much for posting this!
As a kid, I grew up going to the same church as Desmond Doss. We didn't have a tv, but our parents took us to a neighbor's house to see the "This Is Your Life" show when it aired. My brother and I got to drive the little "Wheel Horse" farm tractor that he was given on the show. Mr. Doss was just regular folks to us. We didn't understand the significance of what he had done till we were older.
Wayne Holland thanks for sharing that story! My grandfather served in ww2! Their generation is something to admire! I wish today's generation had 1% of the unity,1% of the faith that the greatest generation had!
My grandfather severed as a B-25 captain pilot of it every time I remember THE BATTLE OF HACKSAW I remember my grandfather in living hell in the sky just sitting their trying his best to get to the objective and bring his boys back home.
It is crazy how he was such a big hero but was forgotten for so many years until the movie came out. Glad someone had it in their mind to make a pitch in order for the movie to happen and make sure this guy wasn't forgotten forever.
I first found out about Desmond Doss when Bill O'Reilly included his story in one of his books. He was not mentioned in any of my history books growing up. I am so glad Mel Gibson made that movie.
He wasn't forgotten until the movie came out. He was the subject of many conversations in the 80s and 90s where I once worked. When the movie came out, I took my son and we seen it together so my son knows as well. Be careful what you say because your words can be construed offensive.
@@opieshomeshop No, don't be careful what you say, because your words might be construed as offensive. Freedom of speech exists, say what is on your mind.
He himself didn't want a movie made of him even though he was approached many times during his lifetime. This accounted for some of the reasons he was not as well known. He was a humble quiet man. But he did show up at many functions for young people as an encourager for them and I was privileged to hear him a number of times!
"I owe you my life." So many men, their children, childrens's children etc...would not have their existence if it were not for Desmond Doss. What an amazing man. Seeing him in real life on this old TV show let's us see just how mild-mannered and humble this superman really was. I was surprised to hear that he spent 5 years in a VA hospital with TB , had a lung and 4 ribs removed, and had a 90% VA disability rating. Those are the kinds of things we rarely hear about - usually it's about the heroic deeds. I think Doss was really touched by the show - seeing everyone again and receiving those generous gifts. I think they really surprised him.
Another time. A couple generations ago names like Rodger Young and Desmond Doss were household names. You probably never heard of Rodger either. Whether you survive or not, and regardless of the circumstances of how you survived or didn't, no one will remember after enough time has passed. I used to curse the guys who went in Canada, in old-age and in retrospect I should have gone with them. Patriotism is a weapon the politicians use to enrich their already-rich friends, in expectation of their own enrichment. And, no one was more of a patriot than I was; I was even an officer.
Who says a man can't be this humble and even timid.........but does such a great feat, that even the roughest toughest could not match. Take heed men. It's not how tough you show yourself in life, but how tough you act when the time presents itself. Humility might appear as weakness, but I believe it is actually a sign of great internal strength. God bless you Mr. Doss. R.I.P.
He was shot a couple times and also shrapnel messed his legs up.. that wasn't in the film Hacksaw Ridge. Gibson said it was too much. Like 😮.. amazing man RIP 2006.🎯
It's amazing that when the citation says the cliff face was up to 125 feet high, Doss, in his typical honest humility, said "I think the army sometimes exaggerates the height. To me it was no more than 30 feet where we were climbing up it." So impressive that even when he is being celebrated, he lessens his own glory.... he was incredibly honest.
You don't win a Medal of Honour, you are awarded it for extraordinary valour. This medic was an inspiration to us as medical orderlies half the world away and more than half a lifetime ago.
I am from England in the UK, I would like to say that I wish I could have met Desmond Doss to shake him by the hand and to say thank you to him for all that he sacrificed in saving so many many lives of his fellow humans. I am totally awed at this rare special man of conscience , he was something so very special to humanity. God bless Desmond and may he always be remembered for the true hero that he certainly was. RIP.
+Rationalist Society Its Jesus Christ friend. (John15:13)"No greater Love than this, than for a man to lay down his Life for a friend." Revelation 12:11 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
Mr Doss was my step grandparents neighbor on Lookout Mnt and got to meet him and talk to him several times. But being a 9 or 10 year old kid until I was older had no idea of what kinda man and hero I was in the presence of because he was never gonna let you know that so humble
Wow. What a truly incredible man. I’m not a believer myself, but Doss’ unwavering faith is almost infectious. Something, or someone, was watching over him in Okinawa, that much I am sure of. His courage, selflessness and humility are an example to us all. A true hero.
"It was a Miracle that he was not HIt" in that Combat. As a Seventh-day Adventist , He had a better Weapon called Prayer and so he was a Conscientious Objector to rifle. To God be The Glory. Thumbs up if U agree 👍
tes516 Yes, Des himself. I just saw a Hacksaw Ridge yesterday on Netflix DVD. According to the movie anyway, he actually lowered 77, including two Japanese who “did not make it”. But imagine if they had survived. Perhaps they could’ve also given their testimony on this episode of “This Is Your Life!”.
I watched a video before this one that said a Japanese soldier came forward and said that he had Desmond in his site and every time he was pulled the trigger his gun jammed.
The ipedimy of what a true hero he was and after all the good he did he lived such a tragic life, he was injured so bad he couldnt go back to being a carpenter, a job he loved, he spent 5 1/2 years being treated for T.B he caught on Leyte island, he lost a lung 5 ribs and his hearing to a antibiotic overdose, his wife was killed in a car accident in 1991, he remarried and died in 2006 without a single mention of his passing, his second wife died 2 years later, he wasn't just a great man he was a great human, May God Bless your soul and both of your wives.
Desmond was truly one of America's greatest heroes to have ever lived. With all the children born because their fathers didn't die because of Desmond I wonder how many people are alive today because of him. God most certainly blessed this man and by doing so has blessed so many others.❤
I feel very fortunate to have met Mr. Doss in Hawaii as a US service man who was undergoing trials as a CO and Sabbath keeper. I believe that he was sent (with his daughter) to encourage us. Its great that his life story is now being told.
He wasnt trying to be famous, he wasnt trying to set any records, he wasnt trying to win awards , he wasnt trying to be the best solider. He WAS trying to be the best human, the best humanitarian, and the best beacon of light to others while being surrounded by death, darkness, destruction, exhaustion, and some of the most hard situations that even in our dreams would haunt us let alone reality. As a prior military member myself i thank him for showing all of us and also civilians what it means to be selfless, how to serve with honor and care for others around us, and most importantly to do it not for the fame or the awards or the recognition, BUT because its the right thing and the most honorable thing to do. May his legacy live on and inspire those of us who might need alittle light in a dark world :-) Semper FI Doc.
What an OUTSTANDING HUMAN BEING! Why at 63 years of age that I discover this man? Why is he not spoken about in schools? Mike Jodan can't hold a candle to this supreme person. This is the stuff that makes great human beings. I have a new hero, and his name is Desmond Doss. What a fantastic human being!
It would be so odd to hear of a man like Desmond Doss today being given a tribute of such magnitude. My heart grieves deeply for the people we have become. This man stood for principle n conviction. I find similitude in the story of Joseph in the Bible. He was treated badly but endured courageously, and in due time, the Father gave him honor n was rewarded as a man of integrity❤❤
I had the opportunity to visit Desmond T. Doss's clinic in Hawaii when I was stationed there, but it was only recently that I discovered his inspiring story. His journey filled me with hope, both for the world and for myself. It's incredible to think that such a compassionate pure hearted man existed, a true testament to the presence of a loving God. He was undoubtedly a modern saint! If only more people could hear his story, we might be able to create a better world.
My heart seems to race each time that Colonel looks at Doss as he speaks of describing Doss and his heroics . You know the impression Desmond put on those men is beyond comprehensible unless you witnessed the courage of Doss with your own eyes . God was watching over Doss on that ridge
A rare man indeed always putting others ahead of himself and did it over and over, his beliefs were unchanging an he remained true to what he thought was right many are alive today because of that.....
My God,I have tears running down my face ,Desmond Doss you deserved you quite farming life, a true hero to all you saved and me, seriously thank you, one of these days I'll place a Bouquet of red, white and blue roses on your grave
This man is a servant of our living and loving God that amazes me!!! He kept his faith no matter what man did to him!! I know he's in heaven now, but his faith encourages us all!!!
Wow, that's awesome that they hooked up Doss with all that stuff! I literally thought they were just going to give him the chainsaw at first and was like "come on man!" But they came through 😊 Wonderful man deserves every bit!
"Give your life to Jesus!" ...that is the first step! (I'm glad you you enjoyed my video! You can find more on my Home RU-vid Channel of Mr.Doss and the God he served with his whole heart!) My Lord's peace be with you.
#HacksawRidge brought me here. i loved the film, what a beautiful story, the actors and cinematography were amazing! but what a Brave medic! i salute you #DesmondDoss! who saved 75 soldiers in worldwar2. passed away in the age of 87 on march 2006. Rest in Peace hero/brave soldier without a gun/medic! #respect real heroes don't wear capes and spandex. But at the same time i just Wish wars stop and never happened! it's such a sad, tragic, traumatizing and heartbreaking event... choose love & peace. God bless yall! :)
We all wish that God is watching over us even if we do not believe. Desmond Doss really did have God sitting on his shoulder in his hours of need. It really motivates you to try to be a better person after seeing such a good man do what he can to help others.
There was Japanese soldier who survived the war and took part in one of the battles in which Desmond Doss performed some of his courageous acts. He said after the war that he had Doss in his gun sights numerous times during the battle, intent on killing him as he was aiding the injured... and he claims that every time he went to fire, his gun had an issue of one sort or another - misfire, faulty round in the chamber or simply did not work for some unknown reason. Makes you wonder about things.

This is what our Proud country used to produce. Not saying we’re off track, just off track on recognition of valuable contribution to our nation. Celebrities and Athletes are NOT those who should be looked up to.
Met my first 7th day Adventist in high school. He worked at the sand which shop with my dad. A truly gentle giant who worked twice as hard to provide and get his education. Loved his mama. It doesn’t have to be Christianity but you need light in your heart for your fellow man.
When I saw the trailers for "Hacksaw Ridge" I was worried Garfield was going to over do the accent. Seeing how Doss actually spoke at the time, if anything Garfield down played it.
Desmond was so humble and had a kind-hearted face and eyes. Sounds like he had some severe health problems later on. I hope he had some help on the farm to use that tractor and do work. That was great the show gave them a station wagon. That was a lot for those days. Rest in Peace and Thank-you for your service to our country.
As soon as I see the name Desmond Doss, I thought to myself, this will be epic. I was far from disappointed. Thank-you Streams of light for uploading this legendary hero.
Your welcome! See more in my video-playlist about his life on my channel!: ru-vid.com (And too see more about the God he served on my channel too! and many many more videos on many awesome subjects!) I'm praying for you all! Peace be to you guys!
Just watched hacksaw ridge can't belive I didn't watch it before... I cried the whole way through the film and this man is honestly a true hero and a real man... I'm a muslim I also belive in my God (Allah) and when you have god you have everything. RIP desmond
this is the America that lives in the hearts of the American People. Decent Good Christian. can you see the simple humble goodness of Desmond Doss.....living GOD's Word. & the Recognition of Desmonds goodness by the businesses who donated practical help for he & his family. Desmond survived Tuberculosis & notice his hiumble gratitude. Love GOD with All your heart All your mind All your soul.
The fact that he treated and sent down Japanese soldiers, tells you all you need to know about this man,all life matters! Not many would try to save people who were killing his fellow men,but Desmond did without thinking twice. Thank you Mr. Doss!!
Amazing ! A great man of faith. I am so glad that Mel brought to our generation this movie about a true hero. But more than that a war hero and true Christian! You can truly see Christ in this mans soul. And without a doubt mr Doss heard theses words from our sweet Lord and savior well done good and faithful servant !
I find this man, so disturbing, how much that he has touched me in away that I can not put into words my respect just doesn't seem like to be enough my humble regards and respect to the legend of this man of pure heart from Australia.
I had the honor and privilege of meeting Desmond Doss in the mid 80's in CT. Wonderful man, genuine love for other, humble and respectful through and through.
What a cool reunion that must have been. The tractor, saws, car, bling, and check must have been a nice addendum. I'm not religious, but I do respect a person with such strong convictions, selflessness, and moral fortitude. Cheers to Doss
What a wonderful humble human being who personified compassion, humility and off the chart courage in the face of horrendous battle conditions. Thank God his exploits and faith are remembered. This old tv episode shows the humble gracious man surrounded by his beautiful family and forever grateful vets. A jewel of a treasure preserved by You Tube. Thanks!
