I have been asked on Instagram to offer my opinion on TV shows like The Biggest Loser and Operation Transformation in Ireland.
Televised weight loss shows sometimes do a great job of showing us the worst of the weight loss industry.
If you take the hard stance that fat is bad it gives you a free pass to try and reduce it at all costs, and that can unfortunately include:
- dangerous exercise programmes not suitable for the contestants current level of training
- aggressive diet plans that result in rapid short-term weight loss, far above and beyond what reputable professionals would recommend for a safe rate of weight loss
- focusing on weight loss in isolation, not body fat levels or other markers of health
- shaming participants and talking down to them unnecessarily
What you see on TV; unrealistic weight management practices, really fast temporary because people cannot sustain it which often comes with huge sacrifices to contestant's physical and mental health. All in the name of creating a television show that actually nudges the viewers towards having a greater dislike of people struggling with their weight.

Thank you for discussing this. People think it’s okay to treat obese people anyway they want because it’s socially acceptable to bash obese people in the name of “health”.

Great video Ben. These shows have outdated and unrealistic ideas about weight loss, and just don't have a place in the health industry now, or TV in all honesty.

From my own anecdotal experience I have found that people have a predisposed dislike of obese people. I'm not sure if it's an instinctual feeling that they hold the herd back while sapping resources and pitching in less or if humans have hatred for weakness (not saying that they necessarily are weak). It always makes me sad when someone treats obese people this way because it's not like they don't already have a rough hill to climb. Then, if they lose weight they have loose skin and feel uncomfortable from getting attention they are not used to.

Except that the state of being fat/overweight/obese has only recently (in the course of human history - the last 150 years or so) taken on a negative connotation. “Obesity as a chronic disease with well-defined pathologic consequences is less than a century old. The scarcity of food throughout most of history had led to connotations that being fat was good, and that corpulence and increased “flesh” were desirable as reflected in the arts, literature, and medical opinion of the times. Only in the latter half of the nineteenth century did being fat begin to be stigmatized for aesthetic reasons, and in the twentieth century, its association with increased mortality was recognized.” (doi.org/10.1053/j.ackd.2006.07.002)

I saw a study that people that train hard loose less weight and even gain more than the people that focus on their diet as their weigh loss method. Your body panics when you do to much high intensity workout and finish your glycogen stores so fast and wants you to eat and sometimes over binge for survival reasons. Exercising is only for strength reasons, depression and hormone regulation. Diet is what lets your body loose weight.

There was one in the UK a decade or so back where they had a group of obese people walking from Lands End to John O'Groats; a grueling trek for anyone! And the way it was presented and edited put the contestants in a very bad light. They were all whingers and quitters. I walk loads and wouldn't enjoy that march...

I have to say that the clip from Operation Transformation is not representative, her behaviour is horrendous, but in general the show promotes lifestyle change and not crash dieting. That "expert" received several complaints that were highly publicised and left the show after apologising. Good riddance! The show is a mixture of healthy food choice and recipe advice designed to suit the people's lifestyle, exercise is introduced as a tool that promotes both mental and physical health as well as longevity, and contestants families and communities are all involved. Weight loss is gradual with a focus on "if you can adopt a healthy lifestyle, weight loss will come naturally". The whole country watches and benefits, supermarkets promote the recipe ideas, and community events are organised, and the people are at the centre.... Unfortunately, they borrowed elements from the biggest loser and have the half naked weigh in for TV purposes, and it would be great if that just fucked off. And it has improved over time as social standards improved. Overall though, I think if you watched it you'll find you sing from the same hymn sheet quite a bit.
