Nice video. The low cost of TVs lately has been astounding. The fact that I can buy a 60+" TV for only a few hundred dollars is nuts. It makes me think about new applications for TV display technology that can be enabled. I'm sure everyone has noticed that many restaurants now use TVs as their menu boards, enabling mouthwatering video of the food they sell and dynamically updated offerings and promotions. Same with billboards and many other pedestrian advertisements. If the tech gets cheap enough, I wonder if we might see full wall televisions or window based displays becoming common place. On the other hand, maybe VR and AR will soon supplant the trusty TV in all of our living-rooms.
I think that the future of TVs is in VR, simply due to the immersion and benefits of saving space. A shared VR experience would be simply groundbreaking. Currently, the 'heart' of many homes (or at least the room which receives the most traffic) seems to be the room with the TV in it. Previously, it was the fireplace or other heat source, so it's interesting to see 'Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs' in action. Central heating solved one essential need, and a new need (short-form dopamine release via entertainment) was addressed by the household TV. However, the housing crisis and a growing population suggest smaller homes, and the elimination of the TV via a VR headset could drastically overpower the need for televisions. Even today, we have access to small screens at all times (phones and computers) which could act as substitutes. This is one reason why I believe the market for TVs is likely to end within the next decade, signaling the advent of a new S-curve in the home entertainment industry.
I wrote this in "Innovation in Television Managing Innovation", It will be extremely interesting to see where the future of viewing experiences will take us. Especially after having watched the Apple Vision Pro video in class
It's funny to me that curve TV's never took off, but curved computer screens are quite popular! I even have one at home myself. It's a great example of how the innovation may not work in one industry, but the technology was adopted by another
Similar to others I'm wondering how the Apple Vision altered reality may play into TV's of the future. Would be great to feel you were part of the movie! Well.... most of the time
What do you feel would be the next big thing in terms of innovation in this field? I put this under another TV innovation video - I feel it would be interesting to see where mixed reality (specifically, thinking of the new Apple Vision Pro) would take televisions or viewing experiences overall in the future among other things.
I agree with you Pinaz, also interesting you mention "viewing experiences" - do we think with innovations like apple vision pro and VR/AR goggles that TVs will become obsolete in the future?
This is the best video I’ve ever watched. I actually punched a hole through my tv while playing Fortnite a few years back and now I have the courage to by another one!
