Classic video of a flight aboard a TWA 747-100 from Rome (FCO) to New York (JFK). Includes takeoff, cruise, landing, and taxi to the gate. We were flying home after spending a month in Italy and I was so glad I got the chance to fly aboard this classic airliner. Video was filmed on July 21, 1997, just over a year after TWA Flight 800 crashed. I hope this video brings back some good memories for the crews and folks who flew TWA over the years.

This was everything I love - a 747/100, a beautiful approach over Rhode Island and Cape Cod, down over Long Island….perfect! And it makes me very sad that I’ll never get the chance to experience this for myself - I live in the Scottish highlands and I’ve wanted to visit the USA for ages. I love classic airliners and now that I’m 44 and my 3 kids have grown up, I have missed the chance to experience a trip in one.

Wow just pure heaven the sound of those old Pratt & Whitney engines are so soothing and classic and had been working for almost 30 year at the time. You dont hear those sounds again, its sad as this flight is the return flight outbound flight to JFK in conjunction with FLT 800. Nearly a year 4 days to the date of that awful night..Its bittersweet

Thanks for bringing back memories of my school trip to Spain in 1994, on TWA. I flew TWA flights 904 (JFK-MAD) and 903 (MAD-JFK), both 747-131s (my first 747s ever). I was 19, just about to graduate high school, and someone at the school paid my way as my grad present. I still remember the whole trip like it happened yesterday. I also remember the TWA Flight Center terminal at JFK, how could I ever forget it?
@francissmith9443

And I still have the TWA tickets and other travel documents from that trip. It was run by EF Tours, an agency that runs school trips both domestic and international, allowing students the opportunity to see the world, literally, as part of their education.

Hi Vincent, THANK YOU for this video; I was 20 in 1985, my Father had been employed with TWA for nearly 30 years as Flight Dispatcher and retired in the late '70s; as his son, I had a magic TWA plastic card, a Company pass, bearing my name and the even more magical 7R classification; as such I was able to fly free (but SA - Space Available) on the whole network! In 1985, I would go to the airport (Fiumicino, FCO) by BUS (!!!) and then wait patiently for a seat to be available; as the plane was the majestic 747, a seat would always be available :-) ; I'd fly to JFK, then go to NYC somehow (a mix of bus + subway) and usually end up in Manhattan; I'd stay there for a few hours, sightseeing (or buying the latest electronic gadget 🙂), then back to the airport to catch a flight (any fight) to Europe; may be AMS, may be BRU, or MAD .... it was an experience SO thrilling, that of being able to just pick a city in Europe and then say "Today I'm going there !"; So, I boarded the TW841 FCO-JFK Flight so many times, that I lost count. But I kept all the boarding passes........ THANK YOU VINCENT, for this video, I didn't have a camera with me in 1985 (and video tape recording would have been prohibitively expensive for the normal person back then) so, I can relive those moments once again, today, almost 40 years later. THANK YOU !!!!

In ‘86 I was a new hire Flight Engineer at TWA. I met a Captain who was a First Officer on the inaugural 747 flight Rome to JFK. Big party, lots of press, many by the fence near the runways end. Hot and heavily loaded the jet ( we called her the Whale) used every bit of runway. He recalled all these people scattering away as they lifted off. Great story but: 25 or so years later I was having dinner with my son in law’s Italian aunt. Without knowing my background she told me how she was on the inaugural TWA 747 flight Rome to JFK. Told me of the party and fanfare. I asked: Was it hot that day? Oh Yes! Did the 747 take a long time to lift off? We didn’t think it was ever going to!

I took this flight back to New York after a opera contract. It was great, the stewards were so nice. I remember we hit an air pocket and a Stewardess named Eileen was coming down the isle carrying trays of little cake squares. They jumped off the cart onto the floor, and I sprang into action to help her get them up. She said in a loud and firm voice " I'll get it...I'll get it. Bless you Eileen, where ever you are...I hope you are well retired by now. Luckily you were not on flight 800 that was mistakenly shot down on its way to Paris.

Ohhh the memories of flying to Italia with my family on TWA always, out of atl on the MD80 and then the mighty 747 into Rome, and then they retired the 747 and used the horrible 767-200 which I hated, but my father insisted we fly Tdub as he called it, we only flew TWA. Those were the days.

Oh the 747-100 and TWA. In June of 1996 my family and I flew TWA1 and TWA2 to Honolulu and back. I can still hear those Pratt’s screaming down the runway. A few weeks later, 800 happened and I’ve always been horrified if any of the crew on my flights were on 800.
@L1011Lover
@L1011Lover 3 года назад
Most likely none of the crew members on your flights TW1/2 were on flight 800. Both crews on TW800 (the actual on duty crew and the dead-head crew to Rome) were JFK based. The STL-HNL-STL roundtrip was staffed by STL crews. Of course one can never be 100% sure, as the more junior FAs on TW800 were no line holders and could have possibly be called to pick up a trip out of STL out of reserve but chances are relatively slim.

Yes, I was a little nervous. Not on this flight but on the outbound flight from JFK to Rome, which was also on the 747-100. We took an evening flight out of JFK, departing at 8:30PM. It was a hot summer day, just like July 17, 1996, when 800 crashed. And we took the same flight path as 800, as many of the trans-atlantic flights do, passing south of Long Island. I just kept thinking, what if this happens again but with my family onboard. Once we got to cruise altitude, I was able to calm down and the rest of the flight was great. RIP to the victims of TWA 800. Thanks for the comment!
