Twenty One Pilots | Migraine {Reaction} | BOP or FLOP 

I'm convinced that Tyler has more ways of referring to the mind than any other songwriter 😂

Migraine is another one of my favorites. ok, almost, if not, all of Twenty One Pilots songs are my favorite. hard to pick lol.

He starts to say depression, but then goes with depresssssssing thoughts instead. Because of the stigma attached to the word depression.

I watch quite a few Reactors reacting to TØP. Many seem to get it but you’re the first one I’ve noticed with enough biblical knowledge to really get the depth of the lyrics. Keep it up, you’re doing great.

I had never heard of this group until now. As a musician, the way he "drug out" the word "depression" is actually a musical play on the word. He depressed the word "depression" musically. You got the vibe but couldn't describe it. There ya go. Love from Minneapolis!

I’ve never really heard a consensus on what he means by the Letters by his Bed but that line always stood out to me too - I always thought he meant suicide notes, but the Bible thing is very plausible as well - never thought about that! I think with “depresssssssssing thoughts” - I think it’s almost like he’s not sure if he should be telling everyone he has depressing thoughts - like he’s thinking whether or not he should be telling people that part of what’s going on in his mind - “shadows will scream that I’m alone” kind of meaning that people probably haven’t believed him in the past- I take it as people who don’t understand what he’s going through will tell him it’s all in his own head and he’s the only one who goes through those issues “Sometimes to stay alive you got to kill your mind” - I think he means you need to find a way to beat those thoughts and get them out of your mind - not necessarily through medication, but finding a way to win the war over the depressing thoughts - basically saying to fight back against your mind and not “let the lion win” as he says The whole second verse is crazy and it's impossible to catch everything on the first listen, but the line "Something you won't forget, it's all about my forehead - And how it is a door that hold's back contents -That makes Pandora's box contents look non-violent" - then the rhyme scheme right after that line is just insane this is one of my favorites of theirs - the deep meaning mixed with the upbeat melody is amazing!

ANTS Automatic Negative Thoughts Don’t just come and go They come and ssssssstay much longer than you want

As someone who considers themselves an agnostic apatheist at best, these 2 guys and NF are the absolutely perfect representations of everything Jesus talked about in the red letters. They know they're human, they know they struggle themselves, they know they need help but they don't give up, and they still reach out and not just for the help they need but to ask if there is anything they can help someone else with along the way. I may not personally believe the same existential things they do as a reason for why they do what they do, but I strive every day and every time I hear their songs to be better at doing what they do, because it is noble and good regardless of reason.

You are right, it's not about migraine but Tyler's depression. I think killing your mind is about trying to stop feeling anything, because the pain is too much. It can also be about detaching oneself or dissociation (which is another mental issue). Yeah, some TOP fans have found strenght to continue for the band's music.

You are an incredible intelligent person and and it is really apparent considering the fact that on the very first listen of the song your are able to grab that much from it

One of the things that stood out to me in this song from the very first time I listened to it was that the reassuring repeated utterance of "we made it this far" is cut off at the end before he can finish it, and in the video if course you see him pulling out the chord before he can finish that line. We talk about how much we have survived and continue to live through but that last part had an ominous feeling to it, diverting your mind to people who did not in fact make it this far and how that remains a possibility that some day your life would be literally "cut off" too early like that line of the song. While we remain hopeful, our problems don't disappear and still require the attention of not just individuals but us as a society

Something I really like about this music video is the differences between Josh and Tyler. Josh instantly makes a run for his instrument (up on the roof), representing a chill or happy state of mind, since he doesn't go through the introspection that Tyler goes through, because Tyler takes a long while to make his way to the mic and only once he sings about being more comfortable and taking your time to appreciate being alive does he reach the rooftop to perform with Josh :)

Great reaction. I’ve listened to this song a million times but never thought about the letters by his bed being the letters from the Bible or the line at the end representing church fellowship. I think there’s deeper religious meaning sometimes that he doesn’t come right out and say because he wants to help and plant seeds rather than alienate anyone. 💚 Great song.

Something I've never seen any reactor comment on is the fact that the song ends abruptly in the middle of a line "made it this f-", which to me represents how if you commit suicide, it's never going to be a clean ending, cause you're stopping everything in the middle of something. Quite a sinister way to end a song...

There you go! You did it! Come for the fun beats, stay for the deep lyrics. Twenty One Pilots have a bit of everything for everyone that wants to take part of their journey. Tyler makes all these catchy sounds that will go well in the radio cause he knows that his lyrics are too heavy and will be ignored by the mainstream media if presented in a different way. One good example is their first album, the one where Addict With a Pen belongs to. You were pretty much spot on with your breakdown, and I'm actually learning a bit more since you are using the Bible references, which is something I'm not too familiar with, so thank you for that. The one thing that you probably missed was right at the beginning, when he says "my pain will range from up down and sideways" and he does the up down motion on the video, but not the sideways, which would complete the symbol of the cross. And my take on the "depressssssssssing thoughts" line would be that he probably wanted draw attention to it in someway. Like not wanting to be that direct on saying depression, but still make it notable for people who would have probably missed it if he had not done it that way. I think "hiding the message in plain view" would be the best way for me to explain what I'm trying to say, lol. I know that you will be doing the reaction for Heavydirtysoul, and the Trench trilogy (Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, Levitate) next. Just a heads up, Heathens (which you have probably already heard and saw the video for) serves as a bridge between Heavydirtysoul and the Trench Trilogy, so keep that on your mind once you dive into the trilogy.

in my own opinion, when he dragged on the "depresssssssing thoughts" is because of how long depression lingers. depression is there and it wont go away and its a very hard thing to get rid of, so i think that that pause meant that theres no break through depression. its constantly going on inside your head.

at some point, you talk about what Tyler says, hearing voices saying he's alone. i also was hearing voices saying same thing to me, started years ago. this band really helps me with bad thoughts, depression.

You will notice that TOP songs with the most depressing lyrics have the most upbeat music behind it.

I know everyone interprets the lines from Twenty One Pilots songs differently, but I interpret the "Sometimes to save your life, you've gotta kill your mind" as a direct correlation to 2 Corinthians 10 where it says to 'take captive of every thought'... just my interpretation. The reason he holds out "depressing thoughts" is that it was more musical to do so. So many of your questions make me slap my forehead because you search for answers in your comfort zones. And killing your mind means killing your state of mind, like changing your perspective, your focus, because whatever has you in this state is being fueled by the continuation of staying focused on it.

the way I represent "sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind" is for example when someone's in a bad spot and at the very edge, it's clearly your mind that causes you to be in that spot (just like what NF said; "mind is a powerful place which can affect you in a powerful way"). so then to stay out of that spot and being alive is to kill or shut down your mind and "reboot" of what you have been dealing with. that's my intrepetation, btw a new sub! ;D

Great reaction! You were spot on on what I’ve always considered the meanings in the song to be. I always thought the “depressssssing thoughts” was just hesitation about talking about depression. He talks about depression and suicide a lot but rarely ever actually says those words in his music. I’d have to do a lyric comb over but this may be the only time he says the words themselves (both suicide and depressing).

I feel that the reason he drew out the "depressing thoughts" line is because when they come that's all he can focus on. You will notice the music stops and everything around him freezes. His hands, eyes, and mind all focus on his "depressing thoughts". Then Josh counts him back in and the music pulls him out of his depression. Just my observation on it.

Hello there! I've been watching your reactions for some time and I love them, seriously. I've seen other channels and I see that you really analyze the lyrics, thank you for that. Well, this is an old one but I wanted to share what I think about this part: "Sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind". I really feel this one and the first time I heard it, it really hit me. I went through some traumatic stuff as a child and when I was about 15, I went to therapy. I realized that I "killed my mind" to survive. It was a defense mechanism. What I mean is that in order to stay alive, happy, normal and live a "normal" life I've pushed all of the traumatic stuff deep down and during my therapy sessions I started to remember things that I made myself forget (or denied that they ever happened). But that was okay because I was mature enough to work them out. So, that's what I think about it. Killing your mind to stay alive can mean making yourself forget traumatic things because if you would try to live with them right here and now it could actually kill you, it could be too much to handle. I always thought it was interesting how the start of the song is completely overtaken by auto tune and towards the end of the song it is completely gone so I thought that that could be a representation of him beating his demons but that could just be a musical choice to make it sound better

When he said "my pain will range from up, down and sideways" is like the cross sign. I think that line "depress-ing thoughts" is because then he said "I do not have writer’s block", so he was like thinking and also you can hear a voice on the background counting "1, 2, 3". Interesting interpretation of the “letters by my bed” line! Ive always thought the letters could also represent Tyler’s music rather than the letters in the Bible. He could be referring to lyrics he writes down as letters, as his lyrics are often intended to help people going through dark times. Writing about depression could tend to bring Tyler back to those thoughts as to write the lyrics he’d have to put himself back in those mindsets if he’s not still in them. The “writers block” line makes me think this. Also you should check out “holding onto you” !

I’m amazed how quickly you’re able to understand what’s being said. We (or many) Clique members constantly battle with depression, anxiety, self harm, suicidal ideations, Suicide attempts. Explaining to people who’ve never had these issues is almost too difficult. Tyler is able to put what we feel. Yes, there are NUMEROUS references to God. He understands us… I would also recommend looking up the lyrics as you’re listening to their songs. 💛💛||-//💛💛

For the “Depresssssssssing” thoughts line, I’ve always interpreted the break as intentional and to mean two different things. “Depressing Thoughts” and “Depress, Sing Thoughts” as in Tyler singing his own thoughts.

Depression medication does the opposite of numbing your mind/kill your mind that’s the whole point of it lol

Life with depression can be slow, drawn out, and unbearable. That’s my take on why he draws out “depresssssssssing thoughts”

He mentions Sunday is his suicide day. Letters could be something as simple as the abbreviations for days on the calendar.

When he says that he has to kill his mind, he might mean that he has to let go of all of his feelings and become numb which can happen to people that become depressed. They no longer feel anything...

kill youre mined means to try to get youre mined off of every thing that depresses you and all that stresses you out so that you can focus on what you want to or need to, and so you can feel a litle better whether that's thru music or something ells, I think.

Depression can be described as having destructive tapes on loop in your head... its the whole bad programming you can pick up along the way.. and it gets so bad that its loud and playing all the time behind (and sometines over the top of) your conscious thoughts. Scary part is that all the destructive voices that tell you how worthless you are, once they're loud enough to hear, will always be louder than the divine voice of guidance that will only come to you in moments of mental quiet. You have to not only quiet the voices, but your own voice, before you can be open to hear the whisper of hope... but once you hear it... 5 simple words are profoundly more powerful than years of being screamed at by a dozen destructive demons.

I didnt finish this yet, but wanted to throw in my 2 cents about medication to kill your mind.. ok, so im supposed to be on like 5 meds, and they certainly do kill your mind. But i dont think thats the type of death tyler would ever point to directly. I took my meds for 2 years, and it was actually worst than death, i was a nuclear zombie til a suicide attempt bc when you kill your mind that heavily.. you might as well die. And i did til i was shocked back to life. I stopped everything cold turkey, its been over 10 years now. Ive learned like 100 lives worth of mental wisdom since in terms of mind hacking.. i got my masters in psych as well.. i think anytime a true artist makes a reference so open ended, theyre typically relating it first to themselves. Id assume, music.. car radio being a great parallel. Music killed his mind from being forced to face his intrusive thoughts. Same for me. Far as the dragging out depresssssssing thoughts.. unless hes specifically explained it.. i see it as a tool to go along with his better titled “migraine”.. i could be wrong but i always saw it as tyler feeling he had to throw in a quick just in case connection to his fans, but dragging out could also be seen as “it eventually stops”... depresssssing. DONE. Its a hopeful line to me to remind his fans to stay strong a bit longer. We can get through this. Then the eye contact in “kid”. But thats from a very diff thinking perspective of it based on just my emotions. But it makes sense to me. I see this song as very mature move of TØP thinking of their fans who have suicide days and shine sun.

I know this is a year later but at around 4:10 when you’re talking about the drawn out s and why he would drag it out like that, as someone who suffers from depression themselves I can’t help but feel like it’s just a reference or nod at how people who experience major depressive disorder at long lengths, if that makes sense? I go long bouts of time just utterly sad and despondent with no real reason other then my brain just being like that.
