Twilight Cove, not to be confused with Twilight Beach of nearby Esperance, is a peaceful, remote slice of paradise in the Nuytsland Nature Reserve on the traditional lands of the Ngadju people. Twilight Cove is nestled among the Great Australian Bight coastline of southern Western Australia at the eastern end of the Baxter Cliffs where they leave the Southern Ocean and continue inland and eastward.
On the day we visited we were fortunate enough to have Twilight Cove to ourselves, there wasn't anyone around or any signs of other travellers. That was until an Australian Sea Lion popped up out of the Southern Ocean surf and put on a little show for us. (See • Endangered Australian ... ) for footage of the Australian Sea Lion frolicking in the surf. We also saw an Australian Long Nosed Fur Seal sunning itself on the beach before waddling into the Southern Ocean for a swim.
Standing on the beach at Twilight Cove facing the Southern Ocean, look to the right (west) and you will see the edge of the rugged Baxter Cliffs as they rise some 60 mts from the Southern Ocean and continue west along the coast toward Toolina Cove. It's such a site to see the flat crystal white beach sand of Twilight Cove suddenly end as the Baxter Cliffs rise like a wall serving as a barrier to people from continuing further west along the coast. As peaceful as Twilight Cove is it has known to be hit by king waves the Southern Ocean throws at it.
In the 1800's as ships and cutters were used to transport goods from Albany to Esperance and further afield to Eucla, some of these vessels were shipwrecked along this coastline. In fact this peaceful little cove was named Twilight Cove after a cutter named Twilight was wrecked on the beach in 1877. The cutter Twilight and another named Bunyip, also wrecked on the same day as the Twilight, supplied wire, timbers and insulators for the building of the overland telegraph line.
Although there may be some remains of the wreck of the Twilight deep under the inland sands, in May 1977 the Western Australian Museum set off to locate any remains of the Twilight, with no success. It's been reported that in 1900 or shortly thereafter, a Mr Dunn from the region (Dunn's Track is named after him), used some timbers from the Twilight wreck to line a 3.7mt well he was sinking for access to fresh water.
Thanks for watching.
