Also, note- Robert was told he had to act the character that way. He almost got fired from the first movie trying to make Edward less - what he is.

Basically the same with Kristen. Like, poor girl, but as boring as it is, that *is* book accurate Bella. It's only Bella's monologue that gives her any personality; without it you're kinda left with... that. You can compare it to the next two movies when she's allowed to emote and do things. Half of what makes Part 2 is "Bella finally having fun" (the other half being, as MovieBob who will forever be etched on my soul wrt this topic said "the movie fell asleep and dreamt it was a better movie").

I don’t think there’s necessarily a financial payment that needs to go along with using a culture in books (especially considering the vast majority of books will never make much money, it’s not like the typical unknown author would have the money to write checks, which would lead to a decrease in diversity in books), but it needs to be done with the utmost of respect, rather than treating them like stereotypes where the chief can’t afford shoes for his kid and sacred rituals are on lawn chairs around a fire for the entertainment of a white girl. Worse, IRL. fans traipsing all over their land caused a lot of damage, and then those fans went and bought shit in Forks, leaving the tribal people to foot the bills to repair the damage, and never once did Meyer stop to tell fans to know that shit out and show some respect. She herself has no respect. She’s so racist.

As someone with chronic depression.. I honestly feel it captures the feeling of depression quite accurately. Now, unfortunately or fortunately (whichever you wanna believe), my depression has never and will never be cured by my one true love returning to me lol. My bf certainly does shine a light in the darkness but depression, at least for someone like me who will most likely be stuck with it for life.. it doesn't go away that fast and certainly not forever. It comes and goes in waves regardless of what's happening in life. Honestly I've got gaps in my memory where I can't remember some months or years (especially from years ago where it lasted ten years) I end up mixing things up because at the time I was very much stuck in that time loop type state. I can't recall anything specific happening and I don't remember what month it is sometimes unless there was a major holiday and even then... its iffy. It's definitely gotten better but I still have weeks or months where it comes back and time just... slips away from me

Me being Native American I really appreciate you educating people on what this movie got culturally wrong and how veered into weird stereotypes. Most people don't know that every tribe has their own culture patterns rituals and language. What I think most people don't understand is when you are Native American and you watch films that have stereotypical Native American characters it's actually uncomfortable to watch. Especially when these characters are played by white actors. I think it's important for indigenous people to have characters of their culture to look up to an actual people of their culture playing their culture on screen. LOL the irony is it would take a British guy to explain to Americans what they're getting wrong with Native indigenous culture in this film.
@Crouteceleste

I don't know what's wrong with people, are they really that stupid or do they enjoy being careless and racist? I'm French so I'm faaaaaaar away from knowing anything about Native American's culture, but the first thing I've learned from movies and old boy-scout books is that Native American tribes all have different names. So it's a very logical thing to think that means they are all different with different traditions, like regional cultures in my tiny country… People should use their brain more often. And also cast appropriate people for a given role. With all the resources nowadays it's just a matter of will to find a suitable actor or actress for a role.

I often say that Meyer's writing style would be a better fit as a member of a writing team for TV and movies. She generally does come up with some fun and interesting plot elements, but tends to over-write and sloppily explain things. With some additional team members to filter and edit her work down in size, she would be a great asset to film. That's why this adaptation worked so well, because her style is easily adaptable into film.
@The_Chef2511

The problem with that is that she's an asshole. She might not be as bad as Erika Mitchell but Meyers was very resistant to any form of editing and she genuinely saw nothing wrong with her culture erasure of the Quiliute, the constant emotional abuse, and the fact that she accidentally wrote Bella and Sparkles as sociopaths. She also didn't seem to realize when she turned into a horror writer. I get that some of it is due to how fucked up conservative Mormonism is but still.

As someone with depression, it's deeply confusing how this movie portrays Bella's character. She's clearly struggling with undiagnosed clinical depression. And how she self destructs when she loses the seemingly only exciting thing her life, and it makes her family and friends worry about her. It's pretty legit and relatable. I was never into the series, but I still connected to Bella in the first few movies. But the problem is it rewards her by using her possible suicide attempt as a way to get her back with the guy who left her. If she hadn't almost died, then she never would have seen him again. Not only is it awful for someone to use threats against themselves to stay in a relationship (which is something real people do) but to also frame it as something romantic that these two have such a unhealthy dependency on each other. I really wish it was just a story about a mentally ill girl who recovers from a abusive relationship and realizes that she's happier with the person who's been her friend all this time.

In defense of Chris Weitz, the studio basically took Golden Compass out of his hands and edited it to remove any commentary on religion. He himself called the whole thing the worst experience of his life so I don't think it's fair to blame him for butchering the novel. Other than that I think he has a very solid resume and it's not hard to see why the studio picked him to direct the second (even if it does feel unfair to Hardwicke, although I can see why Summit would want to release the movies as closely spaced as possible as they had no idea how long the Twilight phenomenon would last, not to mention the book series was only set over the coarse of a little over a year, which has kind of been a problem for a lot of YA series - they have such short in universe time spans that movies series have to rush through the adaptation before the actors get too old for the parts).

So yeah, people might give RPatz shit about having his abs spraypainted on for this movie but if your costar is putting his actual physical health at severe risk to stay buff for the girlies, I think deciding not to engage in any of that is very fair.

Best case scenario he participated in dangerous workout and eating routines to bulk up, as well as intentionally dehydrating himself on shoot days to look more defined (as is “standard” on movie sets and photo shoots around the world). Worst case scenario is that on top of those things he also used steroids to bulk up. A couple key things do occur in New Moon. Even though Bella and Edward get back together, Bella does end up falling in love (to some degree) with Jacob too. That's something that likely could not have occured had Edward not left. And Jacob being a rival for Edward does effect the story moving foreward. The second thing which leaves a huge impact is Edward exposing the Cullens to the Volturi. That creates a sort of danger lingering in the background for the remainer of the series until the end. Overall, New Moon established the love triangle (which as trivial as that may be to most of us likely earned the Twilight franchise millions of dollars) as well as setting up the series ultimate big bad. So it had a pretty big effect on the franchise moving foreward.

Maybe I was just too much in need of escapist romance 💜 with a beleaguered, codependent, introverted girl and smoldering, intense, guilt ravaged guy to notice the problems & the problematic when I read it, but I throughly enjoyed the first novel. And, as I just wrote on the main thread, I thought the otherwise very talented Catherine Hardwick didn't do a very good job adapting it. 😔 I thought the 2nd and 3rd movies were way too melodramatic. In my mind only the 2 Breaking Dawn movies were actually properly directed, by Bill Condon. 🥰 So I've only read the 1st novel, thus I can't have opinions about the other 3 novels. But again my opinion about the movies is that only the 4th and 5th were in any way like the universe of the book. The mistakes in adaptation in the first three were perhaps subtle (most subtle with Hardwick at the helm of movie #1), but bad enough that they really took me out of it. I've learned to enjoy those movies as guilty pleasures, but they don't please and satisfy me the way that the 1st novel did or the way that the two halves the Breaking Dawn movie do. 😋💐⚘

@@judeannethecandorchannel2153 I consider the first movie the strongest, in that it has a distinct tone and style and is earnest about itself in a way most of the other movies aren't. Also, the first movie has most of the best-executed scenes of the series, like the introduction of the Cullens in the cafeteria or the famous baseball scene. I like the third movie for giving a good amount of focus to a good amount of characters (especially since I never particularly cared about Bella or Edward, so much as the other Cullens and the wolves and the Volturi, etc.). I enjoyed the books, though the first was never my favorite. And to be fair, I think there are demographic factors in how much of the problematic stuff one notices. A black person (or someone with enough knowledge of American history to know what the Confederacy is) is more likely to notice problems with Jasper's backstory, etc. And the more glaring faults don't show up in the first book. When I read that one, my only initial query was how she could possibly enjoy any kind of physical affection with someone with cold and inflexible skin. Which I still find to be kind of a weakness of the worldbuilding. SO many people care about the sparkles; I don't care about the sparkles; I care that the Denalis are vampire women having recreational relations with human men, and their whole bodies are made of vampire skin.

I'm guessing that its easier to adapt a mediocre/bad book with a pretty simple and straightforward story faithfully than complex stories with rich themes. In the case of Twilight it benefits from trimming internal monologues and extraneous bs, so even if you cut out the fluff the story is still completely itself. With other more well thought out stories, cutting certain seemingly irrelevant characters or events can have terrible ripple effects that bring down the whole thing, let alone sequences that might not work in a visual medium or are too hard to translate to screen. It also requires the people adapting it to understand the core themes of the original work, which again is easier if they aren't super complex, like Twilight.

One thing I do think they changed in this and subsequent films was the Volturi being portrayed as outright villains rather than antagonists - in the books their actions are much more political. Aro is the best example. As much as I love Michael Sheen's portrayal, he was never sadistic. He's a much more 'lawful neutral' character while Caius is the more bloodthirsty, and Marcus merciful. In the books Aro is actually the one to suggest the loophole of turning Bella in the future so Caius doesn't kill them on the spot. Much of the tension with the Volturi stems from whether Aro considers characters a threat to their existence and uphold of the law. It makes him an interesting morally grey character who is power hungry but with a 'for the greater good' mentality. Incidentally, the greater good is preventing vampires from openly eating people whenever they wanted. It's kind of funny that the 'bad guys' are the only ones holding an apocalypse at bay.
@noelbernabe8704
@noelbernabe8704 2 года назад
I think that's one of the changes which are often make when you translate something to the big screen. THe bad guys need to be more threatening. There needs to be more action. Breaking Dawn 2 is where we see the difference the most. You want higher stakes, bigger threats, and more butt kicking because a certain portion of the movie audience will be bored without it. And I still think they mostly got Aro right. He was threatening and scary, but you can see he didn't want to kill anyone and was waiting for ANY excuse to let them off the hook because he didn't want them dead. He wanted their power. So even with the subltle changes I think the book was overall represented pretty well in this regard. Overall I think New Moon is one f the more accurate book translations out there.

Meyer states in one of the books, if not multiple books, that Jasper is affected by the emotions of the other Cullens often, especially Alice and it makes him act oddly at times. Would make SO much sense as to why he has SO much trouble with his bloodlust if he is feeling all the others' as well. I get that it is hinted that his issues are because of how long he was a human blood drinker, but no other vampire that used to or still does drink human blood seem to have as much of a issue with it as Jasper.

I read the books as a teen. I remember thinking some aspects of the lore was cool. Vampire powers unique to them and their lives. I feel bad now not knowing the werewolves were not well researched. I just thought they were beyond cool. I never watched the movies as I at the time pretended I was too cool for such things.

Actually the part about her becoming depressed and reaching out to the actions that would kind of keep the memory closer to the person she lost… reminded me faithfully of what I went through when my first boyfriend died in a traffic accident. I could actually relate to that. At least in the book( and I read not so long after the death of my boyfriend), it was very a real and intense experience for me.

22:04 Bella clawed out the radio in her car because in her depression, it was too painful of a reminder of the Cullens to remain in her daily life. It’s detailed that her nails were “a bloody mess” after this task in New Moon. Great video and work in general by the way. Thanks for the excellent content.

When I first clicked on this video, I was like 'wait, hasn't Dom done a Lost in Adaptation about this book already? Is this a rerun?' Then I checked the channel and release what he'd done before were more reviews of the books than comparing the books and movies. The suffering he puts himself through for our entertainment is unfathomable.

Another omission from the book I think is a good one is, after the vote about turning Bella doesn't go Edward's way he leaves the room, smashes something, then runs back in, stands over Bella and starts screaming in her face. And no one does anything to stick up for her either Edit: so a few other people mentioned the stereo thing lol
@noelbernabe8704
@noelbernabe8704 2 года назад
In part it's because no one in the room actually agrees with her. Edward runs back in the room when Bella suggests that they turn her into a vampire immediately. And even though most of the Cullens support the idea of changing her, I don't think any of them necessariy wanted to do it at that second. In hindsight Bella herself would probably have more regrets if she got her way, rather than spending at least a little more time as a human before turning. For all the justifiable criticism Edward gets for being so controlling, I think we have to equally point out that SOMETIMES Edward is actually right in pulling Bella back a bit. SOMETIMES.
@dumbasskong6561
@dumbasskong6561 2 года назад
@@noelbernabe8704 In no way was it a good idea for her to change right then and there but that's beside the point. He'd already left the room and violently smashed something when he was outvoted, running back in and screaming in her face whether she had a stupid idea or not is absolutely abusive behaviour. No one pulled him up on it, told him to back off or go cool off or anything. You can disagree with someone without caging them in with your body and screaming at them

My only memory of this is situated on being in the 10th grade when it was in theaters. I was in book club, the librarian was obsessed with the series. I'm queer, and was still figuring that out. I found Twilight boring and we argued about it constantly. We saw New Moon as a class trip for book club-they had a replica of the truck Bella drives in the theater lobby that we all took a group photo in front of. My two friends who liked the series more than I did were more excited to see it..and I can recall the first ten-twenty minutes of the movie before we both fell asleep. That all being said, Dominic's videos on the series are far more enjoyable and certainly retain my focus more than it did once in theaters. (I can't claim my attention span is better at nearly 31 than it was as a teenager, but these are still much more enjoyable to watch).

No, I remember this part of the books quite clearly since this was one of the few things Bella had left from Edward and she was devastated when he took the radio when he left. It's one of the first things she notices is gone when the Cullens leave and she is really upset about it. Emmett installs the radio and Edward takes it and even talks about hiding it under one of Bella's floorboards in, I think, Eclipse. But if I am wrong, then I am wrong. Someone who has read the books more recently than like 10+ years ago feel free to correct me since I'm like 90% sure this is what happens.

Why did "Twilight" get dedicated directors while "Discworld" got the paint-by-budget treatment? Simple: it is difficult to take comedy seriously. Romance, on the other hand, enhances the director's resume as it is part of the drama genre.
