This is why I love Mark Kermode. You honestly never know what to expect from him. The guy calls it like he sees it, and he doesn't feel the need to apologize for enjoying movies that either you or I might think are complete rubbish. I severerly dislike Twilight (both the book and the movie- take your pick) but I thought his review was great. He gets the target audience, and he gets the appeal. The guy is a riot, and I love listening to his reviews , even the ones I don't agree with.
"The background - the hard work - I can do and you can join in with the fluff." Quotes like this are the reason I've grown to love Kermode so much. What a badass.
@missoujei I would say I'm probably on the same side as kermode on this. I love the concept of the story and themes etc. rather than the actual characters etc. In the books, I think I would fall for Edward but in the movie version, I don't think I would. I doubt I would fall for Jacob in either version.
@missoujei I do agree in some ways but he is trying to protect her. To be fair the only suicide he threatens her with is his own & thats only in response to her death. He does effectively isolate her by not telling her to hang out with people like Jess, Angela, Mike, Eric etc. but he's not doing it deliberately. He's not trying to hurt her, just trying to make her happy.
I loved "Near Dark" and it was in my top 300 favorite movies, but has fallen off the list. It is a great vampire movie for having a vampire who refuses to kill (concept of "Interview with the Vampire) and actually ends up with a method of reversing vampirism (in the Ann Rice series of books if you read enough of them) and ending with the man saving a girl from being a vampire to be a mortal love. I have no idea where it would fall now, but certainly in the top 300 to 350 movies of all the movies I've ever seen. "Let the Right One In" is the best vampire movie and "Interview with the Vampire" is the second best vampire movie. Dracula is #3 with Bela Lugosi, who captured my imagination as a child, and was what I always wanted to be for Halloween instead of a clown, and my favorite aunt Vera made me a vampire outfit that I then wore the rest of my childhood while "trick or treating." "Near Dark" would be under all these: 5) Let the Right One In (2008) - Swedish with English caption 27) Interview with the Vampire (1994) 73) Dracula (1931) 80) Nosferatu (1922) 240) Shadow of the Vampire (2000) 290) Hunger (1983) "Near Dark" would beat the Winona Ryder movie from 1992 called "Bram Stoker's Dracula," which would fall under it, but I do love Winona Ryder as an actress.
He sidetracks what the massive issue in the film actually is, and that is the fact that the three main characters are so wooden at the best of times, and angsty and sulky and frustrating to watch at the best of times. Even the clip annoyed me.
After slaying five vampires were you afraid that one weak stupid one from the group was still alive as the threat? The first one sucked and the rest were much worse. The only thing I have to admit is that the two main actors were good looking, other than that the movie sucked, which means the movies sucked.
@missoujei Its true love in the sense that they can't live without each other. Whether its a healthy relationship is another thing entirely. At the end of breaking dawn once they're both vamps, I think it is a healthy relationship. TBH, I think its whats interesting about the story in that what would you do for love? Would you love a vampire? would you become a vampire for him? Would you fall for a werewolf, knowing you don't have to change for him? etc.
Yeah, how time flies! This just popped up on my timeline. Remember my daughter (who was 9 at the time) asking what all the fuss was all about... she’ll be 20 soon😲
5) Let the Right One In (2008) - Swedish with English caption 27) Interview with the Vampire (1994) 73) Dracula (1931) 80) Nosferatu (1922) 240) Shadow of the Vampire (2000) 290) Hunger (1983)
It's good; I accept that. It also happens to have a target audience I wouldn't be seen dead with, a sad fact considering I'm a 17 yr old male, but there you go. Good in the sense that it is perfect for its target audience, objectively there isn't much wrong with it; subjectively, however, worst film I saw that year.
@missoujei is it really emotional blackmail? How does he blackmail Bella by saying don't die or I'll kill myself. Most people don't want to die at any rate. TBH, its unhealthy in the fact that a human is after a vampire and that if they get intimate, he might accidentally kill her or turn her into a vampire. I agree - none of the characters are great. Bella emotionally blackmails Edward in Eclipse to stay away from the fight.
So I'm afraid it's always going to be around - but then again it's not all black & white, girls are into many things, while I was swooning over my unmentionable boyband in the 90's, my favourite movie was The Shawshank Redemption. It's still in my top 5! AND I still think Tim Robbins in HOT!
@eschultz711 he's honest. he had higher expectations for kill bill because he feels emotionally invested in quentin tarantino's career. it's why he's such an interesting critic. you and i disagree with him, but it doesn't make us better critics.
That is a very good point about the book thing... I haven't read any of the books, and when I saw it, I thought it was quite good (apart from a few dodgy wire-work moments), but my dad and sister agreed that the book was much better than the film.
@JMcauley211 Have you heard of opposites attract? Since when did you have to have something in common with someone to fall in love with them? Love is weird. Its something more than have something in common with them or anything else.
Saying Twilight sucks is the most obvious thing to do....everyone does it and its gotten to the point where its become a trend to put it down. I saw the original Twilight the week it was released and i really enjoyed it....the only reason i can think of for why people put it down.,..is because of what followed the films success...13 year old girls swooning over hunky movie stars....i just find it sad that people dont want to be associated with that so much that they end up disliking the film
Reason why The film is better than the book. Its shorter ;D. The twilight books is possibly the worst book i've read. Also, Why are they In love? They having nothing in common, Nothing that shows its love. I don't have a problem with Vampires being in the sun light, as In past novels they could survive in Light but they became weaker. However if they Sparkle, That annoys me. ;D
Agree. I like the Twilight books, not obsessed but I enjoyed them. Think the kiss was too much, jumping was awful but everything else was pretty good. Not the best film ever made, but for what it is, it is better than most teen films. It wears it's ridiculousness on it's sleeve.
Well if you like your males to act more like a girl than you do then twilight is your movie....I agree with those that say it was dull and really had no plot and personally I would rather have to read a dictionary through twice than to read another of Meyers books again.
@eddywards84 I do actually kinda agree that it doesn't deserve ALL the bad press it's got, because now it's just a magnet for hate basically. But I'd still say it was crap and boring, and it's really cheesy. You can't just generalise that all men hate romance and that's why we dislike it, it's just that men aren't affected by the soppy side of it, and it's therefore easy for us to see what a bad movie it is...
There is some good work put into the film. It has a nice atmosphere, and it takes itself serious enough that it can draw you in to some scenes. The story is meh, and the sparkling vampires is not cool. But the only truly unforgivable thing is Kristen Stewart's acting. Having not read the books I don't know if the character is supposed to be that twitchy and annoying, but I've seen her in other roles and it was the exact same mess. Edward was done alright, and Bella's father was quite good.
@elspoko In the video game world, I always felt that there was also a definite "follow the leader" mentality amongst Halo fans as well. Yeah, I definitely agree anyway.
Well it's aimed a teens so teens are gonna like it and lots of older people like it too. I am 25 and love Twilight. If u don't like it fine. But i would like to see u do better.
It's just as much fun to disagree with Mark Kermode, though. I'm convinced that it's only the horror and religious elements in Twilight that made him look twice at it.
Kermode was not necessarily saying he liked it, just that he thought it did what it was supposed to do well. Which was basically to cash in on teenagers who have a lot of angst and are horny. He was just mentioning he's not part of the intended audience (i.e. teenage girls.) I am however and I can't stand the movie or books.
Near Dark. Good flick. You notice they never say the "V" word? Vampire is never uttered in it. I want more from Bigelow! I've never seen any Twilight films, am I missing much?
The movie was horrid. The plot was full of nothing more than teenage angst. The story is dull. The characters are simple celled amoebas with no other emotion than creepy love. But, as all things teenage related, it's supported by a multitude of people who follow the leader, even if the leader is intending to rob them of any imagination.
@pypeworld That's a pretty sweeping statement about fifteen year-old girls. Did I like the movie? No. But I'm not going to dismiss an entire demographic on that basis, because it's kind of narrow minded and insulting. I was a fifteen year-old girl once, and I wasn't a moron.
So erm, he likes it? WTF!? And he doesn't like Watchmen, or Dark Knight, or The Shining? I watched the whole review waiting for him to say "actually it's crap".
Transformers talks to its target audience just as well, the box office tells you that much, it also launched Megan Fox and Shia Labeouf's career. I'm a girl, I can tell you Twilight is a porn for girls as Transformers are for boys. I think older men think there's something sweet about the sexual longing and fantasy of a girl who's nervous about the actual thing, that's why they don't judge Twilight as harshly. You will also notice those who're most critical of the series are actually women.
The film is intriguing, well directed & very stylish, however the acting, characters, effects & lack of pacing is what derails the film. (48%) (2.5/5 stars) (mixed)
the thing is, i guess he is viewing it with no outside influences and a kind of un-biased take compared to most of us. i know i don't like it but its also a sin to like it these days.
@VejlorMorne You would have no idea how much I hated it . You cant imagine how much hate I had. Until I just wanted to watch it with no expectation, just to see it you know, .... I never watch this kind of movies but I tell you this movie still got something,. a lot could be improved, I write stories for hobby ( I dont work in hollywood) heck
Well, you heard what he said about gary oldman in the dark knight? that he was a better actor than heath ledger...and this is from a guy who loved twilight. And I'm not saying gary oldman sucks, but apparently we can't tell who's a better actor or actress in movies...only kermode can
It wasn't too bad. It was just really bland and lackluster. It's similar to the looks of Jennifer Aniston. She isn't ugly. She's just not pretty, let alone beautiful. She's plain. Really plain.
It bored me senseless and also New Moon which is even worse. It's like watching an episode of Dawson's Creek with Vamps. Kirsten Stewart is truly awful, Pattison just about holds it together. How this tripe ever got greenlit..Cherr Ching!
I would like to point out that a lot of people supported Bush's war on terror, as did alot of people voting for McCain. While I do not agree with these two actions that does not lesson him in my opinion since he writes epic books. What's more while I agree Mormon belief if taken literally is ridiculous they still attempt to do good, as do Christians despite their holy book being ridiculous, they don't take it literally they interpret.
@pypeworld I agree with with you, but GROW UP, its TWILIGHT! what do you expect! It's not meant to be on the same level of Right The Right One In! Jeez
The dialogue in Twilight makes me cringe so badly. I want to scrunch a photo of a kitten or something whenever I hear the mary sue self insert and sore excuse of a vampire talk.
i really is a very good film, it gets such bad mass reviews from males purely i think because of a macho culture, any film with a romance is soppy and rubbish. However, despite the romance this is not all about a romance this is about conflicting hidden worlds, which have effects on any relationship developing, but at the centre of it, is a believable romance, with is driven by character development and an ever moving narrative
because the two movies have the same flaws and he chose to gloss over them for Twilight. Transformers has toilet jokes, Twilight has the cheesiest lines. Both target audiences are horny teenagers, only different in gender. Transformers has Megan Fox, New Moon has hunky vampires and warewolves with nicely tuned abs.
