I remember this episode and yes I knew the actor who played Norton on The Honeymooners was the star. He was a very convincing character and this episode made me cry. Loved The Twilight Zone. I didn’t know that was the exact same train from the Adams Family. I just thought it was recreated for the show. Thank you for sharing the facts. ❤️

John Astin salivating at the carnage he simulates is so hilarious, and i remember the tears that Art Carney's excellent performance brought to me when i saw it decades ago. This is truly an interesting collection of feelings tied together accidentally as it were by association with a toy.

I never made the train connection at all. I’ve seen every episode of Twilight Zone several times and you still can surprise me/us with these little nuggets. Art Carney was a very good actor but people tend to remember him for his comedy alone - and he was amazingly funny. But this episode probably was a bit of a shock to his fans as he wasn’t playing funny at all. Please keep doing all these incredible videos - you a,are me every single time with these nuggets😄😄😄😄😄. Thank you so much!!

That is a great episode. I did not know that Santa was played by Norton. The train setup being reused does not surprise me. Props cost money and especially something like that train table would be expensive to build and not to mention the time it would take to set up. BTW, it would be great for Warhammer 40K.

I never made the connection between both shows and the train. Nice catch Rick. You mentioned cost of production. There is an interview with Rod and I think David Susskind in NY and the discussion was the soon to debut Twilight Zone series. The interview was fascinating to say the least but one comment Rod made that I never forget was he said he put everything he had into the production including his house and if all goes well he should be ok and clear $100,000. That's for the whole season! Can you imagine how small the money was in that day for his profit to only be $100,000? The interview was on RU-vid and I think it might be found. I've not seen it in a few years. BTW your getting close to 150k subs! I'm hoping you hit it soon.

Not having seen this episode, I wasn’t aware of the train connection. Thank you for revealing that. Way cool! My question is, and maybe you could do a video on the subject in general, is, considering Gomez always wrecked the trains, did the TZ one actually last throughout the entire AF series? How did they do the effect of wrecking the train and not have to replace it with each new episode? Just curious.
@stuartm6069
@stuartm6069 Год назад
I can answer this for you. On the Adams Family they shot the train crash only once and they replaced the bridge with one that would collapse. Then they re-used the footage in later episodes. If you ever notice they never show the whole train layout when the trains crash and there is always a cut in the scene just before the crash.

I originally saw this episode & (I think) "The Whole Truth" transferred to 16MM film, and they looked regular to me. I didn't see them on videotape until the mid-1980s. Watching them taped makes me think that I am watching an piece of tv history.

I did not know it was the same train set, but once you said it was in another show, I immediately thought The Addams Family. Also, I'd like to mention that not only did the video tape experiment not work because it didn't save much & it looked horrible, but it also limited the type of stories. Episodes had to be shot indoors on a set, which greatly limited stories that would have to include outside locations.

Good eye. I have some trivia as well. Every time Gomez blew up the train in The Addams Family, they always used the same footage including sound effects that you see in the original pilot episode. I guess this makes sense due to budgets and hassles of reshooting the scene over and over. Also, there was another train set that Gomez set up in the main room so Tish could blow up the train. There is only one train on the tracks and it was not an old time iron horse steam engine locomotive. However, this did not stop the episode creators from still using the same footage that they always used for the explosion. As to this episode of The Twilight zone, the title to this episode, "Night Of The Meek", is loosely based on the Bible verses Matthew 5:5, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" and also Psalm 37:11, "But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace". Many think that "The meek" in the title is referring to the children and the gift receivers. However, it is referring to Art Carney's character. One definition of meek is kind, tender, compassionate, and humble. Due to these characteristics, he was magically turned into the new Santa which they imply in the story, was done by the Christmas spirit.
@SoundJudgment

Funny how it is pointed out that back then they tried *Videotaping* some episodes and then transferring them to Film Stock for distribution. They hated the result. Nowadays most ALL productions are shot on Video with Digital Cameras and then played back at 24 fps speed... to *Simulate* a 24 fps Filmed look. And they LOVE the effect! What goes around..... 😅

You mean the train set prop used in this episode was *later* snapped up for the Addams Family which started its run after the Twilight Zone was canceled. And since the TZ was already overbudget, that train set was probably laying around from some OTHER bigger use. Keep going backwards - find where that train set started its journey and you'll find your answers. . .

Neat detail, Rick. I've never been that into this episode that much as it seems like an overused plot device. It may not have been at the time and I was very much alive when it was first broadcast. I didn't see it until 20 or 30 years later so the overall impact had been diluted. However, Carney's performance was magnificent and well-worth the viewing if just for that.
@andyk6796
@andyk6796 Год назад
The six episodes shot on video tape certainly do look like a soap opera. The 30fps frame rate and resulting smooth movement would indicate the copies we see played on TV today are NOT from 16mm film but are copies made directly from the original video tape. Transferring the images to film would have eliminated the "live TV" soap opera look.

Personally I love the 6 video taped episodes, especially the one with Bill Mumy and especially the one with the great Inger Stevens. Video tape works for more intimate episodes. I can think of a few filmed episodes that would have benefited with video tape. In fact, I wish they were allowed to play around and experiement with more things such as time and color. I understand that the original cut of the Jack Klugman episode where he's a trumpet player ran 40 minutes or more. Of course, CBS made them cut it down to the typical length. According to what I read the footage cut was incredibly good really affected the episode which is fine the way it is. Also some episodes would have benefited with color, others are great the way they are. Too bad CBS wasn't forward thinking and more flexible with this and other shows.
