Twin Commander Lost Engine

Today I lost the left engine on the Twin Commander and had to make and Emergency Landing. Turns out it was the #3 cylinder exhaust valve guide broke and the valve was wiggling around. Now I get to drive back up to the airport where I left her to take a new cylinder to get it fixed.

I had an engine shutdown in a Turboprop once. 2am in the morning, Pouring rain, in Mountainous terrain on Takeoff. I was wide awake after that. Glad everything worked out for you 🙌🏼

Probably the best twins on the market, and even now, there is still a demand for them. In March this year my business partner flew from Australia to Ohio to ock up our "NEW" 690B with the dash10 turbine engines. We flew 7 legs across the ocean to Japan then onto Indonesia before finally landing in Darwin. From Darwin it was non stop to our destination . Was a perfect flight sitting at 36,000ft with the auto pilot doing most of the work, while we scanned to instrument panel for any signs of problems, especially crossing vast expanses of water. Then checking our route and charts for areas we had never been to. We were welcomed with open arms , where ever we landed, the Aero Commander agents who were there to meet us, went out of their way to check the aircraft and service the engines, with no cost to us ,except for fuel and oil. Today the 690 is flying almost seven days a week, to remote places around Australia where other twins wont and cant get in our out. We had some modifications done to the exterior landing lights. We swopped the 100W landing lights for HID 55W lights in the wings, the oleo struts and in the nose. Makes an enormous light spread on unfamiliar territory

When that controller asked you if you wanted to declare an emergency, he was really hinting that he'd prefer you to declare an emergency. There is no downside to declaring, and plenty of upsides. The aftermath of the 4 I've declared in 43 years of flying was never more than a short pleasant phone conversation with the authorities.

Ahhh.. I always really enjoy these videos. Not for the video content, entertainment, or even educational value, but rather the opportunity to relish in the wisdom and musings of so many “aviation masters” in the comments. Rarely will so many experts gather on one forum and share their expertise. Doesn’t matter if the video portrays seasoned, professional pilots, who have dedicated their entire life to their profession, we will all read reasons to NOT be impressed. It’s through the criticism of others, that these keyboard Captains try to impress us with “their” expertise. It’s clear, one need not waste time, training and honing their skills as an aviator. By simply reading the comment section of these videos, one can benefit from the teachings of the TRUE masters of the skies, who gather here. When they post their wisdom and insight in comments, scribes record every word, so future generations of pilots may benefit from their teachings. I for one, am humbled in their presence and thank them all for their guidance. 🇺🇸🇺🇸 Great video Glenn, nice job !

Perfect flight, made every decision perfectly. Not his first flight engine out, that's practiced and instinctive response. No comment on the declaration, I wasn't there or PIC. I was enjoying the scenery that's hard to get but in a high wing. Gotta say, in an engine out, I'd be ok. No one in the air who doesn't know the plan. Luckily where I live and fly, flat as a pancake. Would I be as calm as this guy? Oh hell no LOL! Pick up an octave in the voice, increase the rate of speech, head on a swivel scanning - and then realize ...it's all good. I had a FI who was a dik at throwing emergencies at me all the damn time right when he had me relaxed, kicking back then BOOM! ..... He had a way, you are going to remember those moments, especially the first ones that scared the hell out of you because you thought it was real. Really was the fun stuff that will keep you alive.

I applaud you for a job well done but I only seen one mistake made. That one mistake was not using a checklist for securing the engine. With that being said I understand that you fly this plane around 300-400 hours per year so that means you're intimate with the workings of it and it's various systems. In my Viking I carry two checklists and one is for emergencies and the other is for regular use. Both are small lamented lists and have no extra frills in them at all. Thankfully I've only had to use my emergency list once and was for a alternator failure but was not an issue. I continued my flight to my destination and landed safely over an hour later. To conserve power I turned the master switch off and flew home by dead reckoning and simple old pilotage which consisted of looking out the window for landmarks. With this all being said great job and sorry you had an issue with your plane that required you to land short of your destination.
@nizexlizzy
@nizexlizzy 5 лет назад
You are correct and I should use them in these situations. I do regularly review them and make sure I have them in my head because I find in stressful situations I have a hard time trying to read them while also flying the airplane. Having 2 people there makes them much more useful but I generally prefer to keep my head outside as much as possible. But you are correct I should at least try. :-)
@kevinmaiorka5370

@Sean I understand about the use of a qrh but a checklist was never pulled and referenced in this video. He even replied to my comment stating that he should have used it during this emergency. As for communicating I am okay with him not declaring with atc as that was his decision to declare or not. He knows the airplane way better than I do as I have never flown a commander before.

Broke an exhaust guide on #3 causing the valve to wiggle. This is why I think flying single engine over extended water is absolutely insane! A ferry pilot for example can do everything right and still have a forged part break like a rocker arm, or a valve guide, fracture a crankshaft, or break off the tip of a prop(the last two happened to the same pilot I knew). Which was when he stopped single engine IFR after he was 13,500ft over Missoula in solid IFR in his presured Centurion when his O550 broke the crankshaft clean in two. Luckily he was able to land on the interstate freeway with no damage. Afterwards he bought a twin, remarking at least I have more choices and time before I crash!

Google the flight where a mechanic legally flew a twin commander 500 on one engine with the other engine;s prop stowed away. It's OK I guess to get all worked up because of an engine shut down but to a seasoned pilot it's not a big deal. It's very manageable in VFR conditions, lightly loaded etc. After several of these shutdowns in dirty dog freight hauling operations the pilot acts differently than the doctor who loses his first engine on his shinny Baron with a few nurses on board.

Not a criticism as the pilot made a successful non-normal landing on a beautiful day, but I find it interesting about many pilots’ reluctance to declare an emergency or a PAN-PAN, (which USA don’t seem to have much understanding of). Bottom line is that single engine on a twin with an undetermined reason for the engine failure is a compromise in terms of safety. There is likely poor climb performance in the case of a go-around from a low approach altitude, so it helps to make sure the runway is really sterile which ATC will feed to the arrival airfield...(I wouldn’t fancy a low level single engine go around if it can be avoided by ATC coordination with the airfield authorities), flying in bad winter weather with a contaminated wing could be problematic on a light twin, and there are potential issues of fire after landing if fuel leaks are in the engine area or leaking to other hot spots within the airframe....you aren’t always aware of these issues from the Captain’s seat when you just rely on gauges or mark 1 eyeball unable to see what’s going on at the back of the engine/trailing edge of the wing.....ATC need you to make this declaration to help them possibly shed their VHF workload with other traffic they might also be working at the same time and get you expeditiously to the nearest suitable alternate.... the declaration of the pilot makes it official. This will in turn set some wheels in motion and increase their capacity to help you....they will also coordinate the standing up of emergency services available at the chosen airfield, if there is any available. It would be quite an embarrassment if a twin engined airplane conducted a single engine approach at a larger airfield with its own on-site fire services and had an unfortunate further mishap while the firemen sat in their firehouse having coffee because nobody wanted to declare an emergency....I noticed that ATC asked twice and then declared it as an emergency themselves....they shouldn’t have to do that... the coolness factor in handling this is great and all, but you’d be even cooler if you covered all the bases to alert your aviation colleagues on the ground to give them a fighting chance of coordinating help in a timely manner you should you need it....

First mistake, not declaring an emergency.

Glenn, when you were up north you had issue with your number 2 losing compression due to a valve issue correct? So 2 and 3 had issues over last two years. Have you checked everything else out since these two incidents? Just curious how everything is holding up. Take care.

Christopher Patrick yes. These engines are pushing more horsepower than originally designed for and eat cylinders as a result. I have all new cylinders on both engines now so hopefully won’t have any issues for a bit. But you never know. One valve guide just a little off and 3400rpm at take off will find it

@@nizexlizzy Is there a way to de-tune the engine so it wont be as likely to munch itself?

Funny hearing Eaglemed on the radio, I used to fly for them. I feel for the poor soles who still work for that company

Never flown a 500S, but wish I had the opportunity. Flown other twins, but that one alludes me!

If you lose an engine you are an emergency aircraft! Period!
