This in-house built wooden coaster was adapted from John Allen's original plans of the Mr. Twister coaster that operated at Elitch Gardens from 1964-1994. Did you know that the dual lift hills both use the same chain?
Knoebels Amusement Resort is located in Elysburg, Pennsylvania.
This is the exact same video as the Twister 3D video we posted for those that cannot view the 3D version on their phone or tablet. Here is the link to the 3D video we posted: • Phoenix front seat on-...

This is my favorite coaster. I also like the Phoenix at Knoebels. This park is about hour drive north from my place. Then the Wildcat at Hersheypark which is a hour drive south from my house. Always go to Knoebels because its cheaper and more relaxing. Excellent pizza too !

Yes it pretty much does, it's a relentlessly fast ride which is part of what makes it so fun. I also love the layout, it has a few parts that look like the supports could take your hands off. If you sit in the back of the train you'll see most people put their hands down at the bottom of the second hill which is funny.

I've lived in Colorado my entire life and have greatly mourned the loss of the original Mr. Twister here in Denver. I never knew that this Twister existed until someone at Busch Gardens Williamsburg told me about it this past summer. While there are for sure some differences to the original, looks like I need to add Knoebels to my bucket list.

The most terrifying part of this ride is how old it is and how you can hear the creaking when you ride it and it feels like it's going to snap.
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 9 лет назад
Hello there It was built in 1999, it's not old at all. I'm not sure what you mean by creaking but wooden coasters are always louder, it's just the way they are. The Phoenix is much older than Twister is but both are very well maintained.

+HKM You've never seen offride footage of the Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas ;) But in reality, pretty much every coaster, even steel ones, flex and sway. They're purposefully engineered and built that way in order to help absorb the forces of a train as it passes. If they were rigid, the forces on the track and supports would actually be far greater. It's the same reason why you bend your legs when you land on the ground from a short fall instead of keeping them perfectly straight. So, as scary as it might appear, it's actually keeping the ride much safer than otherwise.
@uuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
@uuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 7 лет назад
Hello there It's only like 15 years old. If you wanted scary and creaking, you should've ridden the original.

They did that because this is based on an old wooden coaster called "Mr. Twister" that was torn down at a different park. But another reason they did it is because of space constraints. Coolest part is the Twister has one of the most unique layouts of any roller coaster out there. Knoebels did a great job of putting a big coaster in a tighter space. It's the only coaster in the world (at least out of woodies) to feature a double lift like that and the only of any in the world to feature a curved station. And if you ask me it's one of the most exciting woodies you'll ever ride. It's fast, has a lot of g forces, great layout, and gives a great "out of control" feeling without being too rough.
@coasterguy
@coasterguy 9 лет назад
mhtube01 Agreed, great ride... but there are several coasters out there with curved stations. It was fairly common in the old days, actually. Also, Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach features a double lift using the same chain for both. It was built in 1923.
@clairekwon6708
@clairekwon6708 9 лет назад
mhtube01 It is not the only roller coaster in the world with a curved station, I know for a fact that the Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk also has a curved station, but I believe there are at least a few others. It used to be more common to have curved stations than it is today.

One thing a bit unsettling about the Twister is the cable tension arrangement is the center off the high turn. From the ground you can see the entire section lean about a foot each direction as the train passes. You can kinda feel it up top, like the car is sliding out under you. Of course the cables are there to prevent it from toppling over, but that's a unique feeling.

It is a cool layout, there's several parts on the coaster that look like your hands will get chopped off by the supports! It's fun to sit in the back and watch everyone put their hands down at those parts. It's a great ride though, great speed and feels completely out of control.

Hey!! I'm the girl in the video. To answer your question, I was extremely excited over the fact that the camera actually stayed on to the coaster train itself. This past season we were having issues with cameras going on the coaster unless they were attached to the person riding. When the gentleman came up to the ride that morning and had everything attached to the train, myself and the other operators didn't think it would stay because of how shaky the ride was. The video is actually like the 3rd time the camera went through the coaster so I was pretty fascinated. Plus I'm also very easily amused haha. Also other information... I do operate other rides. The Twister is my "home" ride. Pretty much once you get trained and certified on a ride, you kind of stay there. With the twister being on an "island" they also try to keep operators that work well together there and we end up never moving because we have become a "family" so to speak. I also work the Log Flume, the Carousel, the Kozmotron, and last year I worked the Fandango a few times. When you do get to get off the ride, even if it's for a day, you really do miss the coaster.
@mhtube01
@mhtube01 9 лет назад
softballpitch34 Hey! That's too funny that you're here on RU-vid replying to my comment! That's cool to know though, I'm a loyal Knoebels visitor so I'll be there a few times this summer! I always ride the Twister so I recognized you in this video from when I've been there. Your reaction certainly gave me a good laugh haha I figured it had to be something with the camera. They must know how to secure it to a roller coaster train correctly! That has to be a fun job though working at Knoebels, if I lived closer, I would have applied to work there over the summers through college.

I loved this rollercoaster and I'm not a big fan on them. I will warn you there is a lot of jerking and heading shaking side to side in this ride. If you like smoother and more out of your seat kind of roller coasters I would go on the Phoenix rollercoaster instead of this one. Also if you get sick with dizziness and stuff this one might give you a problem because of the jerking of the head. I loved it and I'm glad I went on it. I went on it twice I loved it so much!!

Seems like they took some inspiration from The Beast with the double helix and 2 lift hills. This coaster looks unique and cool.
@sporksnforks514
@sporksnforks514 8 лет назад
+Brent Fabian Rayburn Actually, the Twister is (mostly) a mirrored version of Mister Twister, from Elitch Gardens, which was actually built over a decade before The Beast. The double lift hill was used simply because of space constraints. Without it, the park really had no way of getting to the height they needed in the space they had. You could ALMOST say that The Beast got the double helix idea from Mister Twister!

WHY WAS NO ONE SCREAMING
@Awareprod
@Awareprod 9 лет назад
Why do these "old school coasters" feature a turn in station and brakes ? Doesn't it create "more" technical issues and maintenance ?
@ericthehighlander
@ericthehighlander 9 лет назад
Somewhat yes, but they have maintenance grease them up every day so the friction doesn't over heat the brakes and cause major malfunctions. It's also convenient that modern roller coasters have magnetic and other fancy auto brakes to make it safer and easier.
@Awareprod
@Awareprod 9 лет назад
BeatenandScarred Thanks for your information. I'm a coaster fan so I know for the magnetic brakes which are really safe, almost noiseless and less rough. Sure it has participated in the evolution of coasters. But I was just wondering the causes that made the park choose a curved brakes section and station. Except for the layout, I don't see any valable reason.
@ericthehighlander
@ericthehighlander 9 лет назад
Awareprod I love roller coasters too, so I'm somewhat knowledgeable about them as well. It is an older ride so i guess that is there excuse for keeping the curved brake section. haha i don't know...
@SeekerLancer
@SeekerLancer 6 лет назад
One of Knoebels' major shticks is preserving classic rides so getting as close to the original Mr. Twister design was important to them. Building a modern wooden bobsled coaster was a technical and maintenance nightmare as well that took 8 years to complete but they did that too, just because they wanted to preserve that style of ride.
