It's interesting how these 2 women both had a breakthrough for the Dutch masses via this tv show in 2019. Floor was already a world star before this of course, but gets insultingly little recognition in our country. After this show she started a solo tour in the Netherlands which immediately sold out. Yet for reasons beyond me we still never get to hear Nightwish on the radio for example, even now. Emma is a youtube cover artist who made music mostly popular by people from India for whatever reason. Since this Tv-show she has also received some much deserved wider attention in own country. She just has a real talent for entertaining as Floor herself commented during the show.

Thanks for your reaction, Charlie. You immediately sensed the emotional payload of the song. As xfortunesquex explained, Floor wrote it for her mother who suffers from rheumatism. Emma could intensely relate because her own mother is an cancer survivor (you can check the channel of Jenniezelf, who provides English subtitles and shows more of the introduction and evaluation by the host and the participants) - which comes very close to the personal experience and memory you mentioned! No wonder Floor can never sing this song without bursting into tears. What I really like about Emma's version is that she did not only modulate but also slighty modify the song. Most notably, she added a blue note in 'every time you *fake*'. Her delivery was spot on - btw: there definitely was some post production, balancing the mix, but nobody needed autotune. As you say: it's all about storytelling, and this definitely was a powerful story. Great writing by Floor, great singing by Emma.

Ok so the first time I heard this song was when Emma did it. I watched the translated episode when it came out. I UGLY CRIED for a good 30 minutes. The song is about Floor's mother's chronic pain, and how she admires her and hurts for her watching her struggle. I have a condition similar to what Floor's mother has. This song is the love and support that the chronic illness community needs from their family and friends. I can absolutely see why Floor can't make it through this song without choking up.

@@BigBrainSinger Why do you think Henk would put up with autotune, here's a vid from his friend, collegue, coach where he explaines how Henk practiced distortion. I'll look up the vid where Henk himself shows, at his home (with 2 other operasingers). I've met Henk, he is a real down to earth darling of a man with a wicked sense of humor, I'll eat my shoe if anyone can prove me he'd put up with fake crap. I've heard many of the singers who appeared in Beste Zangers live in various venues from theater to small festivals on the beach. I've cooked for them for many years arranging the backstage. There was no difference in their sound whether they were doing the soundcheck or happily sung backstage just for fun or on stage. The show wouldn't have lasted for more than 11 years on tv if the Dutch wouldn't be able to believe it was real. We just are blessed with so much talented musicians who take their profession seriously, whether they can earn a living with it or not. Anyway I am very very grateful for all the years of dedication to their craft and I mean all of the crew too, who make it possible for all of us to enjoy live music and I hope we'll soon be able to share those wonderful times again. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qrya0qVOs6w.html

@@BigBrainSinger ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uSWTmf7dAvQ.html It simply hurts a bit (maybe even a lot ;-) ) for I am secretly in Love with Henk and Floor. I've seen them live in small venues. As I said, us Dutchies are spoiled rotten with the quality of our performers and technicians, who are too proud to not give their honest best. Autotune is not appreciated, our musicians would not have any gigs if they'd try to give anything less than reality. We prefer them to sing off pitch if they're not having the best day but are giving their heart and soul nevertheless. Take care.

Charlie, as much as I like and love your reviews and comments, combining any Beste Zangers performance and singer with the words Auto Tune is considered an unnecessary insult however it may be used as a well meant post production tool. The association with autotune in general is that it is (was) a tool for anyone who can't sing to still sound decent. I viewed a whole pisspot full of reviews and reviewers and reactors and vocal coaches to these performances and performers who are not invited to a show called BEST SINGERS for being amateurs needing auto tune. I haven't heard any professional vocal coach review/reaction so far mentioning let alone emphasizing the use of autotune in these performances like you already did twice as far as I've seen, with Henk Poort of all persons and now with Emma. Remarkable.

Hey Charlie, I wonder, haven't heard anyone mentioning auto tune in relation to Beste Zangers yet. Of course post production of the source tapes for TV broadcasting belongs to the job but are you certain you hear auto tune in Emma's voice? In an earlier performance reaction a sound engineer working for this show stated no auto tuning here... So as a fan of your channel I feel a bit of Emma being hit by a negative verdict here...

They use a painfully large amount of autotune when Henk sings, so I wasn't going to out it past them to use it VERY subtly here. I have some pretty detailed headphones and I do a lot of post production work myself, and it does sound like there's just a little for coloration and post-processing. Never at the detriment of her singing though. It's tastefully done. No t pain here

This particular video keeps making me cry. Emma does SUCH a GREAT job of this and even better, she can actually finish the song without crying when Floor herself cries every time she sings it (I wonder how long it took Floor to write the song in the first place because you KNOW there would have been plenty of tears while she was writing...). But this video makes me cry because I hurt for Floor. I REALLY HATE seeing her cry. It's obviously a BEAUTIFUL song, you can't go wrong with it. But I don't like that it hurts her. So of course I don't like the situation that Floor's Mother is in. Just unwinnable... God.

beste zangers never, ever use autotune. that's a huge no, no, all singers are completely live, real, and pure. post production is NOT an autotune, everyone who says that is either a liar or has no knowledge of it. post production is to clean up the sound and give it an extra layer. autotune is to adjust the pitch of the voice. that makes autotune a big no, no. if you cannot sing at the right pitch, you are clearly not one of the BEST SINGERS in the Netherlands. there are too many who can. a little Madonna (singing completely out of tune at the Eurovision song contest) is not just accepted.

Also when I say there's autotune, it's quite literally for the purpose of post production, tastefully done like any mixing artist would use EQ or Compression. They use a painfully large amount on Henk's recordings from this show, so I wouldn't put it past the engineer to keep a tiny bit in here for Emma. It by no means is covering up any flaws though.

@@BigBrainSinger Maybe, I guess, but I've watched more of these Beste Zangers performances than I'd care to admit (including Henks) and I haven't noticed ANY auto tune. I spose I don't have an "ultra trained" ear for AT, but being a musician, we (admittedly) have used Melodyne in studio. If you "use it right" it's definitely hard to tell, which it should be of course. I dunno, these vocal performances all sound pretty legit to me. Cheers
@BigBrainSinger
@BigBrainSinger 3 года назад
Definitely legit and I don't think the auto tune is meant to correct anything from the vocalist standpoint. Likely for room purposes, but that's what melodyne is for. I'd recommend going to Henk's performances. It's unfortunate what they did to his vocals. I prefer his natural color but some TV people don't I guess.

Just because lots of singers cannot knock it off without autotune, you should not presume everyone who sounds good does use it. In “Beste zangers” autotune is a huge nono!!! If you need autotune you don’t belong there!
@BigBrainSinger
@BigBrainSinger 3 года назад
With all due respect, John, it's not a knock to anyone's talent here. Not sure where you got the "they only sound good because they use autotune" notion. That's honestly an antiquated concept. Autotune has many more applications than just pitch correction. Mixers and masterers for big TV programs will use things like autotune, not for corrective applications but to color the sound and have it fit in better with the overall mix, especially when not recorded in a studio environment. This is beyond what people like t-pain do, and it's not to make up for any faults in the singing. Next time you listen to a Beste Zangers performance of Henk, put it next to another of his recordings and see if your ear can tell the difference. They do a bad job mixing his vocals in my opinion by using autotune distastefully.
@johndekker3023
@johndekker3023 3 года назад
@@BigBrainSinger what song and where is autotune used in that song. I hope you don’t refer to the distortion?
@BigBrainSinger
@BigBrainSinger 3 года назад
The distortion in sound of silence? That's a vocal quality chosen by the singer, in this case Henk. The post-production on that recording, however (not the distortion) is something done after the show was recorded by an engineer. It creates this sheen of sterility around the sound that takes care of some of the room acoustic inconsistencies but also takes away the depth of vocal timbre from the singer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lVD_yU6qB98.html Listen to this example and then listen to the Beste Zangers version. Yes this one is live and is not the best audio quality, but you can still hear more depth and nuance in the vocal quality because there is no autotune. The autotune was not necessary to make up for any deficiency in the Beste Zangers performance, rather it was an artistic choice by whoever processed the audio after filming. The level of listening required to hear the autotune is beyond surface level, so it's worth exploring as a listening exercise at the very least.
@johndekker3023

@@BigBrainSinger Thanks. It seems to me that I had another definition in mind. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-Tune
@BigBrainSinger
@BigBrainSinger 3 года назад
Yes, that tool has different implications than making singers who are out of tune sound good. Programs like Melodyne use "auto tune" to literally tune harmonics and room acoustics to sound more integrated with the instrument or in this case vocals. When done subtly it's... well, subtle... 😀
