Rich and Vincent, great episode. I met Kate a few years ago when she stopped by MIT. She's absolutely brilliant. As far as the timing allowed for the show, it all depends on where the Station is in relation to the orbiting Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) satellites in operation at the time. In 30 minutes, the Station goes about 1/3 of the way around the globe. For routine ISS operations, 30 minutes is about the longest sustained constant high bit rate video communications period, when the TDRSS system is in range. NASA is strict about the time, because when the ISS goes out of range of the communications satellites, the signal blacks out instantly. Kate didn't mention the outside temperatures. During 45 minutes on the day side, it's 250 degrees F (121 C), on the 45 minute night side pass, it's -250 degrees F (-157 C).
My brother is in the military now, but studied microbiology as an undergrad, so he also watches your shows when he has a chance. We are both big space fans. I surprised him with this by putting this video on the big TV and going right to the part where you spoke to mission control. It took him a few seconds to understand exactly what was going on and his look of amazement was just wonderful. Then, we put on the footage of Dragon docking with the ISS and the crew disembarking. Kate was the star of that stream too, since most of the stream was her preparing the Node-2 vestibule. It was personal after watching this episode of TWiV, since I already gotten to Kate a bit. You guys are amazing!
You just blew my mind. I'm watching Kate prepare the Crew-1 SpaceX docking live, and then this new video pops up in my feed. I'm already a big fan of TWiV (mug included) - did not expect this overlap. Good stuff!
Love it! Look at Rich, he can hardly contain himself! That's all your smiles Vincent, you can get them all here LOL! Also, HOW COOL, I just finished watching Kate prep the hatch for the Dragon docked at the ISS. What an amazing person she is, thanks for bringing her to us in such a special way!
Splendid half hour, shared with friends and family, encouraged teachers to share with their students, mostly remove learning from home these days. Thank you so very much.
Vincent and Rich and Kate, I loved this so much I watched it twice! I am forwarding this to my friends and family, especially a favorite science teacher. Thank you so much for all that you do! Cheers, Fern in Minn
While you're looking in I'm always looking out, but speaking of spotting the ISS, I was in my hot tube at about 3:30 am observing statetlites passing by. As I was observing one, it really got bright for 1-2 seconds then faded back to a bright speck, like a star, passing by as usual. I figured it must have reflected sunlight just perfect. Had I not been observing it directly, I would have missed it. No, it was not alien's spying on me in my hot tub and I was not abducted, sorry to say. Seriously, it was a great thing to see. I watch the ISS pass by often. For email notification on ISS spotting opportunities, go to "Spot the Station" enter your zip code to recieve dates, times and other observing data. This was a fantastic show, thank you all very much.
Another amazing lady on TWIV 😍 great timing on having her on. She's going to be busy now with a houseful of colleagues who just arrived at the ISS today! Thanks for this awesome episode 👍
When I was 12, after obsessively reading the Space Shuttle Flight Manual for a few days, I drew a pic of the shuttle with lots of house plants covering every surface. Nice to see my 12 year old dreams possibly becoming a reality! 😂🤣😂😉😉
I usually just listen to the podcast while at work. Great to watch this. This is great. Why is Kate not floating like the microphone was, is she wearing special shoes? So cool
I always listen to the podcast episodes, but considering the circumstances, I just had to watch this one instead. Awesome episode. I'll give episode 444 a listen once I've caught up to the latest episodes of TWiV and Immune :)
Amazing simply amazing. This brings a new light to transparency.😂 So entertaining. You guys, gals included😉, are just the best! Thank you for putting this on. Bravo!!👏👏
For Kate's first person's beautiful account of seeing "the planet" (Earth) from space for the first time, back in 2017 see this vintage TWiV ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rn04C0XOVIw.html starts at 46mins 17secs (I cued it up at Rich asking her what was the "coolest thing" for your viewing pleasure). You are welcome :-)
At least turn the comments off if you’re going to block the truth giving you a spanking. The guy on the left is almost fed up with biting his tongue tho. Let’s see folks.
When iss was designed and built,,, we were promised great scientific discovery w orbiting lab...... haven’t seen or heard of great discoveries???? What have we accomplished for all the money spent other than built a ritz in space,,,, thank god elin had vision to do what nasa couldn’t and stopped giving ussr tons of cash for transport .... worked 20 yrs in space industry.... where’s the scientific leap for investment???? Seems to b very expensive engineering exercise....
