The Hollies were huge in 70's and 80's Britain. Few bands could match the Hollies harmonising..... They are still touring today... If you liked this, try All I need Is the Air that I breathe, Carrie-Anne, Bus Stop etc.....

Saw this band live back in the early 1980s !! . One of the UK's top bands from the 1960s onwards they produced so many classic songs. You need to check out there other great songs. Gasoline Alley Bred, Bus stop, and especially Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress. It has a fantastic intro !! I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in the 60s with so much great music and so pleased that you enjoy it too.

My dad committed suicide in 2003 (don't worry, there's a funny ending to this) and my aunt was bringing his ashes to Vancouver on the plane. She wanted to carry the urn on her lap but the flight attendant asked if she would rather put it in the overhead compartment because urns are rather heavy, she replied "He ain't heavy, he's my brother." My dad would've laughed his ass off at that.

If you do some searching, you'll find that there are versions of this story with a lot of different attributions, several of them predating the founding of Boys' Town. The oldest seems to be an account from the late 1800s by a minister of a Scottish girl carrying her brother and giving the famous response in Scots-English dialect. It was very illustrative of the spirit of Boys' Town, so it was appropriated for the movie, which became the best known usage.

This is a great song about the love of siblings for one another. Just like your sister putting her around your shoulders letting you know how much she cares and loves you. This beautiful song was written about two orphan brothers who came to the Catholic institution known as "Boys Town" in the state of Nebraska in the USA. The story goes...When the priest saw one of the brothers carrying his young sibling on his back. The priest as the boy can he help bring him into the administration building...The boy responded, "That's okay father He Ain't Heavy He's, My brother." There is now a very famous 8-foot statue of the boy carrying his brother in "Boys Town." Great reaction.

A beautiful summary, you lovely young ladies. I didn't expect this today because when you talk about the singer playing the harmonica, one of my best friends was also a singer who played blues harmonica between verses. He was tragically taken from us a few years ago and today is the anniversary of his death. I am now sharing a tear with you both, and I thank you for the lovely words in describing this iconic song.

Yeah! "She ain't heavy, she's my sister" . You got it Mia, as did Juliet talking about how close you are, and Mia I loved how you put your arm around Juliet spontaneously during the song. Both of you showed the sentiment of this song. Keep that going throughout your lives, you will be glad you did. I've always found this a very powerful song too. It is the best word for it. Also, your Dad did some beautiful camera work here -- at one point you can see both the band and you girls, for about 10 seconds -- it was beautiful.

This song was killer! I don't mean literally but it really played with my emotions! There was a point in the song where it felt like a direct stab to the chest and I really felt, in that moment, that I needed to hug Juliet for that reason. It's a very pleasant feeling knowing that there is someone that will "carry you" when you can no longer walk and when you know you would do the same for that person. Thank you for your comment! -Mia

@@danasfaith5738 Beautifully said, Mia, thank you. As a younger brother, as you are a younger sister, I too have a great older sibling, my brother, and that's why I wrote what I wrote -- expressing my hope that you and Juliet can maintain a great friendship throughout your lives. I know you can. It's great that during the song you felt you *could* put your arm around your sister. Imagine if you didn't feel like you could do that to your sister? That would be awful. Credit to Juliet for making you feel welcome, that you *can* come to her at any time. And I know she can do that with you as well. 😊

The Rev. Edward J. Flanagan, an Irish immigrant, borrowed $90 from a friend and opened Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home in December 1917. In 1921 he bought the 160-acre Overlook Farm, the site of present-day Boys Town. The “He Ain’t Heavy, Father… He’s M’ Brother” phrase and statue have become Boys Town symbols. The Rev. Steven Boes, executive director of Boys Town, retold the story of the iconic words in a 2014 blog. An excerpt: “Back in 1918, a boy named Howard Loomis was abandoned by his mother... Howard had polio and wore heavy leg braces. Walking was very difficult for him... Soon, several of the older boys were carrying Howard up and down the stairs. One day, Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger, one of those older boys, if carrying Howard was hard. Reuben replied, ‘He ain’t heavy, Father... he’s m’ brother.’ ”

This song and Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress are their best songs. But they're 2 songs that stand test of time.

They had a lot of beautiful songs - you’d love The Air That I Breathe.

For another great Hollies song check out Stop,Stop, Stop. They were all big Buddy Holly fans, hence the name with a spelling change out of respect for him.

Back in 1918, a boy named Howard Loomis was abandoned by his mother at Father Flanagan’s Home for Boys, which had opened just a year earlier. Howard had polio and wore heavy leg braces. Walking was difficult for him, especially when he had to go up or down steps. Soon, several of the Home’s older boys were carrying Howard up and down the stairs. One day, Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger, one of those older boys, if carrying Howard was hard. Reuben replied, “He ain’t heavy, Father… he’s m’ brother.”
