Dr Sharpe & Amber Schenk (IWS Institute for Wildlife Studies) hike up to the Two Harbors nest and band Chase & Cholyn's seven week old eaglet today! Dr Sharpe took beak and hallux talon measurements along with weighing the eaglet and determined it was a boy! The TH eaglet was really feisty and did bite several times and was a handful! The new bling band number is 49 D. Thank you for watching! TWO HARBORS; IWS

Huge thank you to Dr. Sharpe for another successful Two Harbors banding day and a thank you to Lady Hawk for the full coverage! Banding Eaglets and beak and hallux measurements should be done at every monitored nest. Thanks to Dr. Sharpe we now know the chick is a male and he can be tracked through his bands which gives us access potentially to future sigtings. We'll also always know if the chick returns to Catalina for the future like so many others have done that are banded. Those who watch this whole video note how educational the footage is. Dr. Sharpe carefully approaches TH-1 so as not to startle him. TH-1 was nippy and is a feisty young version of his Dad Chase. The falconers hood was used to calm the chick so they could take measurements. Careful handling when he took TH-1 in his arms and careful placement of TH-1 back on the nest when it was all said and done. TH-1 will be named soon so everyone should keep an eye out for that event. Mom Cholyn returned about 6 hours later with a Rockfish for dinner for TH-1 and is roosting on the nest again tonight. Thanks LH! SEDs🌙🌚🦅💜

"Banding Eaglets and beak and hallux measurements should be done at every monitored nest." I couldn't agree more. How different things would be if they did this at SWFL... Harriet, E21... we might have had a chance at knowing something about their whereabouts. It boggles me that these birds, which are endangered and federally protected, not to mention the nation's mascot, aren't properly accounted for.

It's bittersweet news, that this was apparently Dr Sharpe's last banding, but it's good to know he has an heir-apparent in Amber. And that he is still plenty young and active enough to assist when and where he is needed. Smart move.

I'm speechless! Bravo to Dr. Sharpe and his assistant for doing this important work so professionally and so successfully! I don't think I breathed for a good 15 minutes of this video! When Mom flies in with dinner later, 49D will have a lot to tell Mom of the goings-on while she was away ... aliens landed and abducted me from the nest! Then, made everything go dark and put an implant around my leg! Mom, they're "monitoring" me! But, you'll be proud to know, I left the big alien with a souvenir from my beak! 🦅

Wow lovely view, in CA and NJ wow the rent cost for that view would be high🤣 They are so gentle and talk to the eagle just like we do through our screen. I do not follow this cam ( did not know about it until it showed up on my feed). I just started watching the SWFE cam when Harriet disappeared. I have learned a lot about Eagles ( my late Dad loved eagles and collected wooden carved ones from all his travels and when my Mom passed away 31 years later all of us children took one! My Dad would have loved these cams. The rest went to the grandchildren or friends ! Watching this was so educational! I wish that Harriet's and M15 last 2 eaglets had been banded just too know how they were doing and if they came back home from time to time. They had to be so careful with the little one. Well he did pose for his glam shots. I will check back in to see what his name is and how he and his parents are doing.

I know that . Sometimes other organizations will band the babies too. Harriet disappeared and this was her last clutch. She was a very well known and precious Mom and different from most others. Her mate raised the eaglets alone and did an amazing job. Banding would have provided a way to track and recognize them in the future. They were the last of a legacy and they were followed and loved worldwide .

Sharon--Yes. it got tangled up in Mom's talon set taking off and she(in flight) pulled it off the nest and it fell off the nest outcropping to a lower ledge a few feet down and stayed there until Dr. Sharp rescued it a few days later and put it back into nest. Last yr was a busy yr for Dr. Sharp Rescues on Diff island nests--thankfully, All were Successful.
