Sailing the 2017 Texas 200. Two hundred miles in a garage built sailboat solo with a great group of people. Music by Ross Bugden / @rossbugden Music by Nicolai Heldas "Royalty Free Music from Bensound"
This is a beautifully filmed documentary, and not a bit of fluff in it. You have a dry wit and you use it well. Subscribed! Ok, the Wizard of Oz stuff was fluff, but I liked it.
I watch your videos sometimes and relax. This is a great and carefree way to spend your free time. I'm planning to spend my holiday on a sailing ship in the North Sea soon. I wish you all the best. Greetings from Bavaria.
Very entertaining video! i especially enjoyed the sophisticated visual aids used for the parts where no video existed. I was grinning so hard the top of my head nearly fell off when the corners of my mouth met in back! Great work.
Thank you Jerry! Sometimes I get an idea in my head that I think might work and I just have to put it out there and see what the reaction is. That's a good reason to work alone on this stuff. Glad you enjoyed it
OK, so I just watched it again four months later and found that I enjoyed it every bit as much as the first time around. Please, please do it again next year!
Thanks for posting... loved your PocketShip! I was just looking for a project a couple days ago and saw the PocketShip for the first time at the Chesapeake Light Craft sight, then randomly (or through the will of the internet) was presented with your video today... really enjoyed virtually making the TX-200 trip with you!
Albert0 the kit and plans from CLC are very well done. They also have a forum for builders. The design and customer service are top notch 👍. Thank you.
Quality story telling John, what a lovely trip that was! So happy your boat ran aground! :D The boat looks lovely, a real credit to you and I'm looking forward to more of your escapades!
man... i read allot of the books from 18 19 century about sailing and naval maritime stuff... looks like allot of fun. great video! loved the dramatizations lol
I waited for the bonus track I know I put it around here somewhere. Love the dramatizations it was like I was there and it was flashing before my eyes. AWESOME VOYAGE!!!
Wow you're the first person I've ever heard of who watched their boat sail away un manned. What an experience that must have been. So lucky to get it back. Ha ha ha. Fair winds.
Capt. Bratt; Beautiful! Every once in a while, Texas does something exactly right! I am also a big fan of Whataburger and Texas barbecue! It doesn't matter, brisket, chicken or brats, it's all good. And it's not a meal without okra and the 10 gallons iced tea! Boy, am I hungry now.
Michael Laviolette Is that your sailplane? My dad did a lot of soaring back in the day. It’s amazing how similar flying is to sailing. Thanks for watching 👍
Congratulations on earning your first shrimp dinner, a long journey but it looks like you enjoyed it. The boat you built seems to handle the conditions well, great job. Love the animation, and the humor.
Thanks Ray! I have some plans for next year's movie to try to make things better. I am cleaning out my shop to make room for the boat for some needed maintenance. I might do a video on that if the story is good enough.
JBratt, I would love to see what you do to your boat. Maybe another interior video of what you have upgraded? Do you still sail with the racing team? Do you sail Candy o any other time? Like to see that too.
Ray Konold The interior of candy is pretty much unchanged from the early video I made. The camera quality, resolution and editing are pretty bad, I need to make an updated version mainly just for those reasons. The guys I sail with on Wednesday nights just bought a new to them boat, a Farr 30. Its a handful compared to the J29. We are working to get the maximum of of the “new” boat. It will take a while but is a great challenge. Right now I have Candy-O somewhat disassembled because of Hurricane Harvey. It looked like we were going to take a direct hit, but the storm eye landed about 30 mikes north. To fit under my carport for protection, I️ had to removed the tabernacle and all the rigging. There was no damage to the boat but is not back together to get any sailing in this fall. I plan to get the boat into my shop this winter for some freshening up for the plywood boat festival in April in Rockport Tx, a town that was devastated by the hurricane. I’ll do a little update video when that all goes down. Thanks for watching.
Great video, makes me want to head back over to Corpus to play in the Bay and Laguna again, Skipper used to run her Drascombe Lugger all over the place and our Sunfish. Loved the animations, esp the ferry :)
kentblairl thank you! Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. I learned to sail in a Sunfish. I just uploaded this year’s video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qtVY4UJFYPY.html
That, Sir, was just was just blinking marvellous. Loved the animations, we ought to call you Buzz Light-year (sail boat Toy Story). Kind Regards. I'll say it again, simply blinking marvellous.
A small boat is much more fun. I have learned my lesson (or grown up) after owning 6 sailboats now. They just got bigger every time. Now I wanted to go simple so last year i went back to a small easy to maintain boat that I just love. 😉
syncro16se i like being able to fit the boat in my workshop. It’s also nice to not pay slip fees. The design is so well thought out there is not really anything I would change.
Nice! I just found the Texas 200 thanks to your video. I'm a new hunter 23 owner, and would love to run this someday. I and my little crew will need to get lots of practice this spring before we'd be comfortable doing a passage that long...
volkswatson oh no I hope I’m not libel 😜. I hope you get down for it. I’ll be there trying to do another video and hopefully up my game. Thanks for watching.
Lou Reis I was just working on the boat getting ready for this year’s 200 in a couple of months. I plan to film this year’s edition too and step up my game for a better video. Subscribe for an alert for when it comes out. Thank you!
It is awesome! I have seen this video repeatedly. Thank you very much for such a professional presentation! The event itself is a real adventure for the real people! Many Russian friends ask if the Russian subtitles could be added? Please do it if possible! Regards!
By the way these are two of my garage creations: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mZxu33BCTpw.html; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7NR1aj2EKYw.html
Well done Sir! An entertaining compilation of a nautically amusing adventure. A moral to this story and your successful completion...if at first you don't succeed, keep trying till you do!
It was cool to see a pocketship completely by accident. Found CLC on my own when looking for small sailing craft and always had my eye on the PocketShip. I've yet to get the courage to try to assemble a whole ship but One day I hope to do it. The ship that caught my eye the most was the Mulsae with the red sails. I like how it looks like a speedboat hull with a sail sticking out of it and the side-board is interesting as well. I like how it's not hidden like a centerboard. (P.S. The "Mulsae" is actually an Edey & Duff "Dovekie" sailboat. Couldn't find any for sale online but it sounds like the plans for them may still be out there after the firm closed in 2010.)
Gurren813 yes the leeboard design is a great shallow water design. Combine that with a popup rudder and it makes for a great “mind at ease” adventure. As for the CLC boats, the customer service and boat designs are excellent. I got to meet the boat designer a couple of years ago, John Harris is not only super smart and innovative, he’s a really nice guy.
The dramatizations were so realistic I felt as though I was there. Lol. Pretty awesome. I temporarily lost a canoe while canoeing from Oklahoma to Shreveport Louisiana on the Red River. It was like a kick to the stomach. I felt your pain imagining your sailboat leaving you behind.
Hiya! This is Parri from GA, I'm using my husbands computer. This was just the best video ever. We watch a lot of sailing videos and they have great footage and editing and all but I just wanted you to know that your dramatizations are not only the best I have ever seen but also the funniest. Please continue to blog your progress and adventures and if/and when we get ourselves on the water we would love to invite you for a brief stint along the Texas coast. Best regards, Jeff and Parri
Thanks Jeff and Parri, It would be great to have you guys down on the Texas coast! I live in Corpus Christ and we have some really great sailing in our bay year round. I am working on a video we do on a typical Wednesday night boat race. I didn't get quite enough footage last Wednesday. Unfortunately, I got hurt and it will be a couple of weeks before I get feel up to getting enough video to finish the project. Subscribe for an alert : )
I expect that the Pocketship template sailboat were regarded among the highest seaworthiness of all pocket yacht category compare than to the Weekender's template Pocket Yacht as though I have my own discretions how to configure the Pocket Yacht Class into extended to the qualified seaworthiness 1. High Freeboard, Deep Draft 2. Low Pole Mast Sails and Small square measure Sailplans 3. Appropriate Ballasting Vs the Sailing Velocity Wind-Mass 4. Fixed Contours with designated Concave Arched 5. Full Keels or Modified Full Keels 6. Responsive Geometry and well-reinforced Materials per square measures, reinforced Harness coping the boat length 7. Well-Supplied 8. Responsive on Early Warning signs and time alert witted for distress preventions (with or without electronic countermeasures) 9. Air Packet Construction Provision 10. Hey Robert Orzech.....I can assure you he wasn't/isn't the first to watch his boat sail away LOL so how did you get back? reverse course? that looks like it would have been all into the wind
Great vid about what looks like a great adventure. Before watching the vid I watched another guy with his "Pocketship", is your boat of the same design, it sure looks like it. Thanx for uploading.
Surely appreciate the adventure; but, would have really enjoyed seeing how you camped, slept and prepared meals. How does she handle on big seas? Seemed like a great trip? I just moved to Portland. Your boat is a beauty. Have you ever had her out on blue water, capsized her, maybe on purpose? Texas
Great vid, well done. Bote looks good too - nice build on the Pocketship! (BTW, I thought BottomSiders had gone out of business, 'til I saw yours - will have to look into that...) I've some friends who've done the Tx200, and I'm too far away but jealous nonetheless. Congrats on making it all the way. :D
The custom seat cushion makers, that made ones like you have, was a company named "BottomSiders" in years past. I had a set on my Com-Pac 23D. Looking online I see they are out of business now, so I am guessing you have C-Cushions...?
great video, JBratt! I recently moved to Corpus Christi. Interested in getting into small boat sailing and eventually the Texas 200. Any advice for a newbie? Are there any small boat clubs in Corpus? Thanks!
Ed Warga thank you! I don't know of any small boat clubs in CC except for the two yacht clubs. I think Rockport does sunfish races and every Wednesday there are the bigger boat races at the t heads here in Corpus
Nice documentary. I'm interested in the boat designs and models. I recognise yours as being the CLC Boat PocketShip designed by John C. Harris. I noticed earlier a very nice boat at 7:43 called Mulsae (if I read it right) nice dagger boards on the side. What make and model is that? I'm at a wooden boat building school and these small craft interest me...
Paul Hitchman I can't remember the make and model of the boat you are asking about but it is a production boat and a great design for this event due to its shallow water sailing ability. Yes, my boat is a John C Harris design. The more I sail it the better I like it.
