Thank you for that beautifully clear explanation. The use Caillebotte's painting for your explanation intrigues me because I've always had a slightly vertiginous experience in front of that work that mirrors the physical visuality of a city experience when you are always turning your head in a constant start of spatial readjusting. I just watched a few of your videos and they are excellent so I've subscribed.

Thanks! Caillebotte was a brilliant artist. It's a pity he ended his career relatively early (because he had enough money).

Thanks, your explanations are easy to follow. I appreciate you showing the development of perspective step by step, those lines make it quite intuitive. My guess as why some of them got it wrong is that they did not start with the geometric lines, but just directly painted from observation.

Thanks! I think your guess is right. Some artists started their work with a pencil and ruler to first get the perspective right (like Houckgeest), other just picked up their brushes and painted the work outside from observation (like Van Gogh). They would probably still understand the use of perspective intuitively, but with all the other colors and objects in the painting, it's easy to get the perspective a little bit off.

Thank you very much for this series on perspective (and all your videos in general). I learn something new every week! I've got a question tho. Concerning the painting of Delft's Nieuwe Kerk, shouldn't the central pillar stand closer to the bottom of the painting, parallel with the lines going to the distance point on the left? It's difficult to explain without showing, I hope you get what I mean.

Thanks! Are you talking about the pillar just left of the altar? If so, I drew the perspective line and it perfectly lines up with the position of all the pillars to its left (those going into the nave). If you talk about the pillar partly obscuring the altar in the center (the pillar closest to us), that one is not aligned with those to its left, but that was probably due to the design of the church (you can see that by the unpatterned tiles in between the pillars). Let me know if it makes sense, or whether I missed your point.

Thanks for the reply! I'm indeed talking about the pillar closest to us. Glad to know it's because of the church's interior and not because I misunderstood your explanation :)

How to set the second vanishing point, how to set the distance between the first and second vanishing points?

The key is to use a horizon line and pick two unique points on that line. The space between two points can be informed by your observation of reality.
