+regis32 Well, it's a ritual first of all. Add to it the Absenthe is very high in alcohol content and sugar does not dissolve well in it. That's why the water is dripped over the cube and then into the pure liquor.

+Harry Jansen Well, sugar is mostly unnecessary nowadays but the water has other reasons. The real absinthe is a herbal spirit and the "louche" effect you can see in the first part of the video is caused by the herbal essential oils which are not water-dilutable. This improves the aroma of the drink and makes it smoother. This is a good test of quality. If your absinthe is any good, it will louche with water. The likes of Hill's Absint and such will not, because it mostly is just a grain alcohol, sugar and some artificial colorants and aromas. It has little to no actual herbal content and as such will only dilute, not louche.

Yes, ofcourse u can also drink it pure but it is more traditional with the fountain and icewater. In the early days Absinthe contained Wormwood which would cause hallucinations and then only a small amount was enough for the effect to occur. However wormwood is now illegal for some time and is very hard to find a bottle of Absinthe that still has it. The famous painter Vincent van Gogh is said to have cut of his own ear while being hallucinated from drinking Absinthe. Hence a company also released Van Gogh's Absinthe, which refers to that incident.

WernerNL  Absinthe has become legal in the USA and most countries (due to the innability of proving that it can produce such effects). It is now legal and easy to purchase bottles of absinthe containing wormwood (Tujona) that produce those hallucinogenic effects. Prices range from as low as 30£ to 200£ for a single bottle, but it is very worth it.

WernerNL We used to do it more the first way but less water. Get the cube wet a dash of water and mix it about. Also didn't see it mentioned, tradition Absinthe has Wormwood. Hard to get your hands on the wormwood now days. Some friends and I managed to import a bottle with wormwood in it years back. That stuff is no joke. You will see and talk to green fairies.

Sharktoothedmogul yup, but as anything for that indulgence, it's usually toxic. I remember one of my English friends calling it mind rot. Sadly, it's probably safer than 90% of the chemicals in this cigarette I'm smoking lol.
