I bought a brand new car from an out of state dealer about twenty years ago when there really wasn't any online thing for that. The car I wanted was a limited special edition and there were only three left at dealers anywhere in the country. I called the dealership and explained that I wanted that specific car so we could simply skip directly to the finance office and then we could handle any paperwork via overnight or two day mail or fax. Then I had a third party car hauler who was willing to pick the car up from the dealer outside Chicago and deliver it to me outside of Washington D.C. for about $750. When I got the car there were no dealer issued temporary tags. There was some sort of tiny slip of paper taped to the inside bottom corner of the windshield on the passenger side that I guess somehow served as my only temporary tag until the certificate of origin arrived and could be filed at the Virginia DMV and a title generated from the certificate of origin and permanent tags issude. So I drove around Washington dc, Maryland and Virginia for about two and a half months with empty brackets. No plates, no temp tags, nothing. I even got pulled over a couple times for minor driving infractions and only one cop even bothered to ask about why I was driving around without any tags at all.

@@PhilLesh69 I think you have a few months grace period, but I would think the cops would at least think to ask. Steve Jobs use to do this. He got a special deal from his dealership and lease cars for only 6 months. He never needed to get a license plate or car registration because of that.

The if they had another license plate on the flipped side, then they’d have to get it registered, and it would be for a completely different car. So as soon as anyone looks that up, then it would also tip them off. I guess they could have at least then had it registered to the same MODEL of car, but then that would require owning 2 cars of the same model. So they probably just settled with no license plate, since that’s pretty common.
