I use the Mountain Rose Herbs Cumin and say it is great! For a long time I used to use a mortar and pestle to crush the seeds. I have started to use a grinder that I think is used most often for cannabis. It is just whatever Amazon had as a top recommendation. It isn’t perfect. It is also not always as well crushed as the mortar. It is quick and convenient. What do you use? Just pour it into the bottom tray and don’t turn it over. Grind. And if it is a large batch remember to open the compartment above so you don’t have cumin in whatever you grind next. And of course if you ever get carried away from your task at hand and grind with the cumin at the top, go ahead and open the whole thing up to clear all dust and debris. I have found a couple things that happen with this device that prove that this is not its intended primary function. First is the magnet in the middle that holds the bottom tray to the middle compartment is recess mounted in a pillar in the center of the teeth. The problem is that you have to manually clear away debris from this pillar before you begin grinding or it will not become fully seated. This causes larger pieces of material to escape the teeth. I think this could be overcome with a slight incline to the walls of the pillar. Possibly a very slight twist or incline plane to take advantage of the natural mechanical action of the grinding to disperse the material in motion. Ok, so I scrape some seeds away from the pillar with the back of a cheap flat pressed metal measuring spoon. This will be important in my second discovery. Second is that compacted cumin grinding get compacted around the space between the outer ring and the outer wall of the grinder in the bottom lid. I went thru many different treasures from the junk drawer before finding that this little “Kitchenmade” pressed metal spoon with a slight curve to the handle fit in and slides along the outer case of the grinder with its natural concave curve from the factory press. And there you have it. So there you have it. Not perfect. Not great. But it is the best I have been able to do so far. Please help me if you have found something better for small batch herb grinding. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Get a coffee grinder. Best thing to use to grind seeds and other things into a powder. Never use a weed grinder. They have an extra compartment with a mesh screen, that seperates the kief trichomes from the weed whilst it grinds, if you wanted to collect that stuff for various purposes. I wouldn't want to put other herbs and spices through it and ruin such an important piece of machinery.
Super food evolution Started using Cumin in my Gumbo recipe after watching this video. Thank you 😊 Excellent info.very entertaining videos. General repair
It is interesting to note, in the medieval times, they were growing cumin across vast English estates. All this was before importing Mideastern and Asian chilis, peppers, (even salt), and other herbals.
