Thanks Adam for sharing your trip to Bougainville. We lived there for five and half years in Arawa. In fact I worked as a Pediatrician in Arawa General Hospital, from September 1979 to December, 1984. Then Bougenville copper Mine (BCL) was running in full swing. We had an excellent time there. We loved the place,the people, the life there . After 35 years of leaving that place, we feel, that was our second ‘home’. Even now we have friends there. Sir Melchior Togolo, and his family, who are Bougenvillian ,and resides in Port Moresby is one of our very good family friends. We loved your post . Your post refreshed our memory. Em Ta Sol.

Thanks for sharing Adam. I spent a part of my youth on Bougainville, 1970-74, my father worked at BCP. I attended tupukas elementary in Arawa. spent many afternoons with the local village kids exploring the foothills in search of war relics, swimming and diving for yabbies” in Tupukas river, inner tubing down the Bovo, climbing thru the labyrinth of twisted branches in the Banyan tree. Weekends in Kieta at the “sailing club”, often Sundays at Arovo Is. playing on the beach, snorkeling, diving the sea caves on the east end of the island for lobster - as our parents enjoyed way too many “greenies” (SP lager) at the bar. And the rope swing in Loloho bay! Thank you for bringing back the memories, Bittersweet, things have really changed. Safe travels

Foreigners used to come in capital Port Moresby (PNG) and made negative post in PNG but you really don't know about TRUE COLORS of PNG , there is no people like PNG in the world when you go into PROVINCES of PNG LIKE this nice guy did. Love, Smile and Respect is only you will found in the Provinces of PNG. PNG is only untouched Jungles, Waterfalls, beaches etc, on earth. God bless PNG.

Bougainville was perhaps my favourite destination in PNG. I travelled the region between 1979 and 1994 and I always made sure to stay on Arovo Island which of course in those days was a thriving resort. The drive up to the mine was always an experience too. The saddest thing is the devastation wrought by the civil war and it is difficult to imagine a return to how it used to be.
@adamconstanza
@adamconstanza 5 лет назад
It's hard to imagine Arovo as anything different to how I experienced it recently. Even though friends sent photos and explained while on the island what used to be. If you haven't already watched them, I also have videos from Arovo, Panguna, Pokpok and many more on my channel which you may enjoy.

I lived in Arawa for 2 years in 88-89 as a child with my father working up in Panguna. I was only 6 years old, but i vividly remember swimming at Loloho, going to Arovo island, having a swimming carnival in the Panguna Pool. Living there had a profound effect on my world view, travelling from regional Queensland to that tropical paradise, it opened my eyes to how different cultures can be and the Bougainville people were some of the nicest people ever. Thanks for the update, i hope to go back there soon.

Thanks for the great footage! I spent time from 1978 to 1987 at Panguna working for a Milwaukee company called Nordberg on an engineering project for Bougainville Copper Limited. In all, spent about 35 weeks living either at the mine site up in Panguna or down the coast at the old Davara Hotel. Best part was the snorkeling at Loloho and out on Arovo Island! Even got a chance to take my rental car down the West side of the island from Panguna to follow the tailings going down to the Jaba River. Saw some amazing villages and the huge flying foxes. Looking forward to the recovery of the area with their recent referendum vote for independence.

Perhaps you are one of the few people who might imagine what it was like for me, as a kid born and raised on Bougainville , to then move to Burton Upon Trent, UK to live.... 😑😧 ....My videos would have been quite different to yours 😂 Noone had ever heard of Bougainville or PNG in the UK when I moved here in 1989... certainly not the circles I was in ! "Bogeyville".. "Were you born in a banana tree?"..🙄 I would love to do what you have done, and truth is that once I was there I probably wouldn't leave..!! I have seen enough of the world to know Bougainville is Paradise on Earth..I would live there tomorrow, in a hut in the bush.. I miss my Wantok brothers and sisters🌈💓

Wow, what a change that would have been, that would have been crazy even as a kid. Once this whole COVID-19 thing settles you should go back to Bougainville and reconnect, it's still beautiful and I'm sure places like Arawa, Pokpok and so on haven't changed all that much.

My memories of the market in Arawa,as a kid, was how full it was and the smell of musky, male sweat....still love that smell now, as it reminds me of my paradisiacal island home, in childhood. All the beetlenut stained mouths...I remember the bats, flying down to Arawa from Panguna,each night at 5 -5.30pm.Magnificent...and oh! Those crazy bus rides up to Pnguna,the drivers with little care for safety.Perilous,yet exhilirating1. Giant,fat crocodiles basking,engorged,upon the black sand beachwear my kindergarten outside of Arawa ...and Loloho....I think it was the most beautiful beach I shall ever swim and snorkel in. Do they still have the main bridge over Bovo River,for vehicles, with suspension bridges a little upstream? Thank you. I hope you get a rewarding project to work on, back there.
