Well, I’m not reserved with my compliments. I reckon I have passed the opportunity to deliver them in my youth. This is brilliant. A tweak here and there creates a departure. Love watching talent in the art I love. Thanks, Davie.

When I look at the thousands of flies tied around the world, I think of patterns that would work here in East Tennessee. This is one. Buggy, with movement, a bit of flash and yellow. Tying this one for the creeks here with brook trout in them.

So three years on, I have to tell you what a star this fly is. In various hook sizes it has caught me big browns and rainbows in the UK plus Largemouth, & Rock bass and other fish in the USA.👍

Many trout patterns are also killer panfish flies. People who think that fly fishing for panfish begins and ends with a popper or rubber spider are really missing the boat.

The wee Welsh devil is still one my loch/lake staples. Hares mask is perfect for pin fry. With some additional twists. Natural works. So does olive dyed mask with some hint of red or orange at tail and throat hackle position depending on if the fry are roach perch minnows or sticklebacks. Some nymphs/buzzers are also better suited to the hare and or stripped quill body devils #10s down to #16s. 12/14 are my sweet spot.

Love this video, Davie! One of my Ottawa Fly Fishing Society buddies gave me two of these this Spring in a fly swap and I've been wanting to tie it ever since! I like the opal rib and the technique for tying down the silver wire.

These are popular flies! Like t The Cormorant, it looks like you may tie them in a hundred ways! I would fish these in the moving water, would you use it in both? I love the mylar down both sides of the nymph!! That is a nice touch Davie. Have you ever done a video on your top three flies for Stillwater, or top three for River?? Thanks Davie, always such a pleasure to watch you tie or fish. I wonder how they would look on a #14 Draper hook?

Hi Davie, Love the videos. Have tied a few patterns in the past but only a novice really. Gonna have another crack at it soon, but having practised a few tecniques recently am finding I am really struggling with seeing the smaller flies even with my perscription reading glasses. Do you use any magnification device glasses, goggles etc. Any advice would be much apprieciated. Also what would be your top ten fly recommendations(not salmon) for both still and river fishing to give me a varied range to start with. Thanks and Regards Neil
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 5 лет назад
Hi Neil, I have been a bit lucky when it comes to using glasses as up until just a couple of years ago I could get away without using them but I have started to use +2 reading glasses which do help me see that bit better..I'm not sure what you could use but make sure you have good light have a white or light blue background as this will help as well... All the very best Davie..

There are stand-alone magnifiers, as well as those that attach directly to your tying vise. Try looking on Ebay, as that should give some ideas as to what is available.

Was just wondering if you could use another thread like uni 8/0 fire orange to change the colour of it Davie ? Let what they call a hot spot. Thanks angain mate for sharing your skills with us all. Best Regards, Ken

@DavieMcPhail 5 лет назад
Hi Ken, I have tyed them with the fire orange, chartreuse and even black thread, it's also worth using Glo-Brite flosses to highlight the heads as well and the No 4 in flu red is very good... All the very best Davie...

Davie McPhail Thanksfor coming back to me Davie. But I was just wondering if you ever tied any salmon stoneflies and how big? I really enjoy watching and hearing back from you my friend. Hope your day went well for you and your family. Best Regards, Ken 🙂
@handcannon1388
@handcannon1388 5 лет назад
You could make the head any color you wish. A small glass bead like a "killer caddis" bead would give a tiny bit of weight and allow for even more head-color options. A simple black one looks great on midge nymphs.

Hi Eric, I have attached a link to a video showing one of the best ways to fish this type of fly as fishing small pin fry patterns and nymphs like this close to weed beds and in shallow water is where they would normally be found..I hope this is of some help to you.. Lovely tying as always Davie. Wee question ........what method do you use to trim your superglue brush fibers??
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 года назад
Hi Stuart, I lay the brush with the bristles sitting on the edge of the shelf, then I cut it close to the stem until there's not many left using a stanley blade..Hopefully this helps you and I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie

You'll get closer to the pronunciation of diawl if you say "de-owl" You say bach pretty well though. It means little devil in Welsh.
