Nice pattern and I just love to see tiers using non-flying tying materials. Repurposed materials is a obsession of mine so do like this a lot especially when the result, at least in your hands Davie, is so appealing. Thanks

My very first attempt at an organza pattern, went a little different. It was a long time before we were using this stuff in patterns. I bought a bunch of organza Ribbon one day actually I think I bought it because my tying box needed something shiny in it. So my friend Harris and I were looking for something to do with it, so I tried it out. I built a mayfly wing and tried it out. Nothing fancy, I cut a piece about 1 inch long, doubled it over and creased it. Then I cut a set of wings out of it. I fiddled with it and finally set up a pair of wings. Then I tried it on to make permanent pair of wings. To make them a bit more tough, I put a little head cement on the wing to make them last. The wings sat well, the strength of the wings was not great, but they held. We called it the miracle mayfly. We were never skunked with it. We got up on high ground at the lake. Just to see what happened to the pattern but it was a bit before we found the reason. So that stuff that Organza was wonderful. The light shining through caused caused great reflection on the surface and attracted anything that saw it. The fish always made a a dash for it and the fastest fish got the hook!

Hi Davie,Thanks for sharing this pattern!I like to overall effect that you get with the organza ribbon fibers - the body is more transparent and insect-like. I expect that a clump of the unused long fibers would make an excellent trailing shuck. I will have to try a few flies with it.I use an OFLA rotary blade knife and a straight-edge to cut plastic and foam strips for fly bodies, I found that the OFLA worked very well for cutting the organza ribbon to the taper that I wanted.Hank

Thanks again for a crackin' fly. I really do like organza. I found a sale at a closing store and got swiss straw, and every color organza on large rolls for 1 dollar each. Even when I share this with other tyers. I will never run out. All the best to you and your family for a blessed Christmas. Sean

That's a belter of a nymph. I'd like to try it with a silver bead on the head and a size 16 hook and I bet it would catch Grayling.

Another great pattern! Thanks! I believe there no contraction against weighting this pattern a little bit to reach fish in deeper pools?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi laulbad, Adding weight to this fly would help as you said to get that bit deeper when needed, the main reason I didn't is that I'm tying these to be fished in the Home International competitions which are fished on lochs/lakes and the rules are that you are not allowed to add weight to your flies but you can fish sinking lines which can compensate for this..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie

Hi Davie! Many thanks! Then I wish you lot of success in these international competitions. I am fishing alpin / austrian waters... Here you are allowed to weight the fly. Sometimes you need it to reach fast deeper waters when stream is stronger. Until recently this year was really poor in rain and the water level never has been so low...

It's a lovely pattern. Could one substitute an emu feather for the organza?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi FarmyJoe76, You could use the emu instead of the organza but you would have to follow it up with a rib to protect the emu as it's not very strong on it's own, though it would certainly catch fish as well.. All the very best Davie

Hi Jeremy, I use Sheer Class 10mm ribbon, I did a search and found some on Amazon so I have attached a link to it for you to see..I dyed the white fiery brown and it came out perfect..www.amazon.co.uk/Organza-Chiffon-Presents-Wrapping-Crafting/dp/B0B5532Q4Q?th=1 All the very best Davie

Hello Davie, Is there a width of organza ribbon you find more useful? Mike
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Mike, I use the 10mm one as I can tye patterns in the sizes fished mostly here, although I do have wider in white so that I can dye it if I need the fibre a bit longer...It's not an expensive material unlike many other fly tying materials out there so finding a use for it in some of our patterns is worth doing as it does work really well when I've fished it on nymph and wets...... All the very best Davie

Hi davie is there any difference between pseudo and organza?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 года назад
Hi Jay, Pseudo hackle is a far stiffer fibre than the organza and I have mostly used it on small lures which have fished well though I personally prefer the organza ribbon as it can be used on many more patterns like caddis pupa which I have found works really well...It will depend on the patterns you are tying as both are worth having in your tying kit.. All the very best Davie..

Davie, I don't understand why you needed two holographics?? A pearl and red. What is the purpose of these??
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Mick Porter, This mix of the pearl and the red holographic on midge works really well and if you look close as I turn the fly can you see the red coming through just as you would do if you looked closely at many of the natural midge pupa that are hatching. This colour combination is used a lot and if you hear anyone saying a traffic light buzzer is doing well then this would be the colour used somewhere in the fly.. All the very best Davie
