Tying Figure Eight Ties On Your Skein

Any size works. Some skein judging competitions will specify what type of yarn and the number of ties.

First, make sure you have the skein supported somehow - have someone hold it up for you with their hands inside holding it open, or loop it around a chair back or some large cans set on a table. You want to keep the loop of the skein open while you work. Untie or clip each figure-8 tie. If you have removed them all without finding the end of the skein, look for another knot where the beginning and end of the skein may be tied together.
