I particularly appreciate the tip about forming the wing case, and seeing your careful set-up, to leave room for the bulk of the mallard fibers. Valuable information. Thank you for sharing.

I've tied a gross of grosses of this pattern and I still learned some new ideas about herl tailing, thread management, wing case case mounting. and all around economy of motion. Thanks Mr. McPhail.

Thanks for the reminder of a great pattern. Haven't tied or fished these for decades - I'll make a point of rectifying that for next season!! ATB Davie! Hank

Great TIP about starting at the eye to control covering the mallard fibers! That has always driven me cRaZy. The Zug Bug was the first fly to catch me a trout when I started fly fishing! I'm going to tie some this way for my box. Thanks Davie!

Good pattern. Thanks Davie. I like to save the cut-off hackle waste, after hackling, which I run through the eye hole after varnishing. Cleans it right out!

Thank you for another excellent tie! I stumbled across a pattern by Jeff Wimer called the Super Zug that is based on this but is a Spey or soft hackle style. If it is something you would tie I would love to see you work! Thank you for all your great ties! I have learned so much from watching and then practicing your techniques! All the best!!

A great fish getter.Fished 3 a time, one as a dropper and another tied in at the bend of the point fly thus creating your own 'hatch'.Deadly on panfish and God help you if 2 hefty trout strike individual flies in the troika. Always wanted to tie an uber zug bug in larger size for freshwater bass and landlocked-salmon though they both have taken regular trout sized flies just fine.Merry Christmas Davy,thanks.

Forgot about this pattern , fished it on the Bow River 20 years ago and it was lethal. Will have to tie some up for the Madison and see how they work here :-)

Hi Davie, the Zug Bug was probably the first nymph I tied and the first one I actually caught trout with. I started on size 8 hooks and 3/0 thread, talk about an oversize head! I used natural mallard but just the tip of the feather and tied in on the stem. I've never seen the thorax cover tied in like you did, looks great! I've used dyed wood duck but that color never produced. Starting the thread back from eye and finishing the head from the eye back would have helped me a lot in tying better flies. Where were you when I needed help back in the 80's when I started tying? lol just kidding, but I'll be tying my Zugs like you did from now on. All the best to you and thanks!

Cracking little pattern and great tip regarding the step up at the head. I find my thread creeps going forward a lot if. I’m not careful especially when using the utc. Cheers Davie
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 5 лет назад
Hi Junior J, UTC is a flat thread and will slip especially at the head, uni-thread is round so it doesn't slip the same but if you wax both threads at this point it will help stop this happening..I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie..

Davie McPhail Cheers pal, saw your older video on prepping wax and the best way to manage it into small pieces so I ordered some more last night.

Another great video. Thanks. How does one go about fishing this nymph? Dead drift? Active? Down and across?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 5 лет назад
Hi Jose E, Cast up stream and allow the fly to drift as you said, keeping a watchful eye on any sudden stop or movement near your fly but putting the odd wee twitch does induce a take when things are quiet can be worth a go...In the lochs though you can use all the methods from just keeping in contact, slow figure of eight, pulling and finally on the hang before lifting your flies off will take fish..I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the kind words... All the very best Davie...
