His eyes are fixated on one spot in the audience throughout the entire song. Lady May must of been in attendance that night.

I've listened to lots of different versions, but this is hands down the best one. Probably because he was singing to her. (at least that's what I like to think 🙂)

Both your comments have been my exact thoughts since I first discovered this beautiful version. The way he has a smile at times while singing, you can almost see him blush at times, and the way he bows his head at "and I fell a good long ways for my lovely Lady May!" while looking at that spot, it had to have been that wonderful, lovely, Lady May!

"I've seen my share of trouble and I've held my weight in shame." I've heard it put a lot of ways, but, man, that's powerful stuff right there.

Every time I hear that line I tear up or feel more emotional then I already am while listenin’ to this song. It makes you rethink of the bad stuff you’ve been. The brokenness you have. The hurt you felt or cause. The hole in your chest. All those emotions make you ask yourself, why do I deserve a gal like her? Or why do I even deserve a gal? Heavy stuff for one song.

KiloAV8R it makes me think more like i'm on the path to finding love that makes me feel this way towards a lady. i know the one isn't here yet but this song makes me feel so confident that i'm a hickory all the same. and she'll turn up one day.

And when he caps off those lyrics with “and I’m baptized in your name”, it just lifts all the weight of that line right off your shoulders ,absolutley beautiful song writing

I'm a stone's throw from the mill And I'm a good walk to the river When my workin' day is over We'll go swim our cares away Put your toes down in the water And a smile across your face And tell me that you love me Lovely, Lady May Now I ain't the sharpest chisel That your hands have ever held But, darlin', I could love you well Til' the roll is called on high I've seen my share of trouble And I've held my weight in shame But I'm baptized in your name Lovely, Lady May Lord, the wind can leave you shiverin' As it waltzes o'er the leaves It's been rushin' through my timber Til' your love brought on the spring Now the mountains all are blushin' And they don't know what to say 'Cept a good long line of praises For my lovely, Lady May Now, I ain't the toughest hickory That your ax has ever felt But I'm a hickory just as well I'm a hickory all the same I came crashin' through the forest As you cut my roots away And I fell a good long ways For my lovely, Lady May

Anyone else out there old enough to have seen a twenty-something Billy Bragg on stage with just a guitar and a microphone? Wordsmiths both, and a similar originality of voice. Nearly 40 years apart...but worth the wait.

I found this man on the SongPop game, of all places. I can't remember if it was "Feathered Indians" or "Whitehouse Road", but I have since bought all his CDs and will be going to hear him with Sturgill Simpson when they come this way on tour. I have not been this amped about a concert since I saw Italian Bluesman, Zucchero, in March 2017. Tyler is just so pure of voice and music ❤
