I remember hearing about this music video from my parents when I was still Mormon about how "disrespectful" and I agreed. Now, 5 years later I've left the church and I think this is beautiful. I will never fully understand what pain and shame that members of the LGBTQ who grew up in the church have experienced, but I can only imagine how hard it must be. People have every right to "disrespect" a religion that disrespects their very identity and makes them feel alienated.

I love this song... I've listened to it dozens of times already. The drums are punchy, and those analogue synths are heavenly... Very good lyrics too. I left the church a couple years ago because I decided not to go on a mission and I was alienated, and I was discovering things about Mormon history that bothered me. Leaving is one of the best decisions I've ever made. I am happier than ever, which is kind of funny because Mormons will make you believe that your life is meaningless without the church. Leaving the church feels like leaving an abusive relationship.

I was raised Roman Catholic not Mormon but this hits so fucking close to home. I’m trans and bisexual and I hid it for so many years. There was so much shame. I left the church last year and never looked back but I have so much trauma and hurt from being in that church...

I'm proud to say I have met and performed with Tyler. He is one of the most talented and nicest people I have ever met, and I love his artistry and how passionate he is. I am so happy for him. TYLER YOU ARE AMAZING!

This actually makes me really sad. I remember how this feels. You see your whole life through the lens of this religion, then you learn something that disagrees with the very core of who you are. This video is like watching a man being torn in half.

Alyssa Grenfell sent me to this video. I am not an exmo but i have and had family in the lds church and i wanted to learn more about the intricacies of their belief. Ive learned alot from watching alot of exmo conrent. Its even got at my former Catholic views. I am ex-catholic and have found my own spiritual path since.

I'm straight and could not be more proud of you for standing up. I am sorry you ever had to fell this way but, know God has called and you Sir you have answered. You are a king among men. Haters will hate and good men, women, and God will NEVER! SO lets hear from all the people holding the book of mormon in one hand preach hate in the other.

This is my second time watching this video. The first time I was and all-in Mormon and was deeply offended. This time I'm newly Exmo and feel this anger. "You used to baptize me when I wasn't ready" has been a topic of conversation between my husband and me, especially since we have kids close to that arbitrary age of 8.

Thank you for putting into words and song, how so many people who leave the LDS church feel.

Always been a fan. Since the velour days. I was waiting for the moment Tyler would find himself. His truth. His confidence. Leaving the church was theee hardest and scariest decision I’ve ever made. Now, 6 years later, this song still perfectly encapsulates how I felt when I finally learned and accepted that that particular church as an organization is evil. I love you Tyler. Always have and always will.

So great, I have struggled with these issues for 16 years and it is very cathartic to see you speak and visualize so much truth through art. There is a lot of hurt and betrayal to swallow for many of us x members.

Music and art has never been about respect. It's about being true to whatever emotions you feel, without censorship and without care for how others will receive your art. This is what an artist does, sometimes you agree with them, sometimes you don't see eye to eye. But I will always applaud the honesty of an artist to him/herself.

I totally understand Tyler's frustration and pain. I was born and raised in the LDS church, grew up in Utah, served a 2 year mission, and was married in the temple. I had my name removed in 2012 and can say it was one of the hardest things I've ever done but totally worth it. Me and my wife could not be happier out of the LDS Corporation.

This video honestly gives me so much hope. I'm glad someone is finally saying something about the way us children raised in "the church" are made to feel like there is something fundamentally wrong with us. I'm still trying to get away from the grip of hate. It's terrifying to think I may never be able to escape. It's the mental damage that does the worst on us. I don't know if I'll ever be 100 % okay with myself when I was raised to think that every decision I make to make myself happy is disgusting and wrong.

This song, beat, and video perfectly embodies the pain and anger felt after sacrificing so much of your time, money, and energy to an organization you believe in with all your heart and realizing its untrue and harmful to so many innocent people. Tyler and I both served full time missions, 2 years of nothing but selling these lies to innocent people. When you break through that level of brainwashing, this video, right here, is a perfect depiction of the emotions that follow. Congrats, Tyler, and thank you from millions like us.

my husband walked in the room and asked, "are you watching hipster Captain Jack Sparrow?" but seriously though I'm addicted to this music video and song... the message runs so deep for any religion... and the chorus had been stuck in my head because I feel like I'm trash and maybe one day someone will see me as treasure.

Also listened to your Mormon Stories podcasts this week and appreciate how respectful you are to the church while being honest about where you are now. It's a hard balance, but people who have been through this transition know the pain and appreciate having an advocate like you who is willing to express love and sadness at the same time. Those ties that bind are just so deep.

Great song and video! Tyler, by virtue of being in Neon Trees, was part of the Mormon publicity scheme for so long for no reason other than being LDS. His music was used by an organisation that continues to this day to systemically discriminate against his own sexuality. That is why he had to go out big rather than quietly. So he could never be used by the same organisation that has deprived him of the self worth he deserves for so long. Good on you Tyler, awesome imagery in the video and the lyrics. It is hypocritical and naive when members of the LDS Church criticize Tyler Glenn's artistic message, claiming that if he "leaves the Church" he should simply "leave it alone." Tyler grew up in the Church as a faithful member. He honorably served a mission. The culture is ingrained in his psyche. After finally gaining the strength to acknowledge his sexual orientation, he STILL attempted to stay faithful to the Church. But the Church's recent policy banning the children of gay parents from membership was the last straw. NOBODY who has lived Tyler's life can simply walk away from the Church and "leave it alone." He has every right to fearlessly express himself the way he is doing. Tyler has every right to use his artistic talents to express the mental and emotional anguish he experienced during the course of his self-discovery. BUT, for those of you who think the recent same-sex marriage policy is the sole reason prompting Tyler's exit from Mormonism, you are flat wrong. The policy prompted Tyler to dig deeper. He was finally able to trust his own judgment and face his doubts head on, rather than following that mindless mantra of "doubting your doubts" He was no longer afraid of his doubts. He sought truth motivated by courage rather than fear. Through his research, Tyler discovered that the LDS Church is not at all what it claims to be. Not even close. Watch Tyler's interview discussing the video. Watch his Mormon Stories interview. Look up the CES letter. Track down the sources. Discover the truth for yourself. The Mormon Church engages in the largest most expensive efforts of all churches to convince the world that its religion is the ONLY religion with the complete truth. The Church sends people all over the world in an attempt to "convert" others, and has been doing it for more than a century. Its members constantly post messages on Facebook and other social media promoting the Church. In contrast to more than 150 years of the LDS Church's attempt to persuade the world that all other religious viewpoints are wrong, this is Tyler's first attempt to express HIS new views opposing the Church through his art. If you disagree with Tyler or anyone who has left Mormonism, I challenge you to address the substance of their criticisms against the Church. Don't engage in name-calling (saying that he "looks miserable," "looks unhappy" is a pig, is Korihor, etc.). Don't tell Tyler he should shut up and walk away quietly. Telling Tyler he is wrong for expressing himself and that he should stay quiet is blatant hypocrisy when your church and its members spend billions of dollars attempting to convert the world to its narrow viewpoint. My bishop told me i was wrong for being gay. Compared my sexual orientation to necrophilia and beastiality. After that was said I left the church. Never going back. This song is excruciatingly satisfying!!!

So many comments from those of us that feel so similarly. The video resonates with me. I lost my brother 23 years ago when he took his own life trying to reconcile the life of a gay mormon. I am not LDS anymore. Currently I live on an island surrounded by acceptance fill with different cultures and languages. I have never been happier. Something so necessary to break the chains of a religion confined in my head. Good for you. Several years ago I went to a x-lds meeting in SLC when visiting. It was for people healing from their bad experiences growing up. I went to “help” a friend who was having a hard time (thinking I was fine). Then one of the speakers started talking about the temple, telling and speaking of all the things I had been taught “ you will be cut off at the throat" ... yes they used to do that kind symbolism (they stopped doing it years ago). I freaked out. I felt as though God was going strike me down. At that point I realized I was not ok. That this miss doctrine had such a hold on me, STILL. I made a point to tell all I knew whenever I could about the temple. I didn’t hold back. So when people ask me about the Mormon Temple they got a ear full ... including my religious name Lydia (wait wait wait... guess what, no lighting bolt.. I’m still here). My heart aches for the pain in families, for individuals secretly and so publicly disowned. I wonder if they make kids memorized the articles of faith still? Since hey sure aren’t practicing #2. Keep healing yourself Tyler... it is a process I’m still going through but the more I’ve seen the light the more realizing is that they are on the outside of society and pure love. To many feeling lonely and not wanted his song brings us together.

I don't personally enjoy the music but I like the message. as someone who was raised up until they were 12 as a Mormon and raised in the Mormon culture of Utah it's good to see artists revealing the church for what it genuinely is

The church strikes gays with one hand and embraces them with the other: "We love you! But your gay family can't be a part of our church. Our compassion for you is great, but you can never truly one of us."
