TYNEMOUTH Newcastle Upon Tyne, The Abandoned Tynemouth Outdoor Pool on Long Sands Beach and Laurel and Hardy visit to Tynemouth Plaza

Tynemouth in North Shields is a popular holiday and seaside destination. Here you will find the fantastic Longsands Beach, an abandoned Tynemouth Outdoor Swimming Pool and The Grand Hotel. We explore all of these and give you an idea of what it's like at Tynemouth Beach this year.
0:00 Sea Banks
1:36 Long Sands Beach
2:36 Tynemouth Outdoor Pool
3:48 Sharpness Point
6:52 Longsands Surf School
8:29 Grand Parade
8:57 Tynemouth Grand Hotel
We being this 4K Walk at Percy Gardens and Sharpness Point right next to Effard Rocks. From here we make our way along and down to a long abandoned Tynemouth Outdoor Pool and Long Sands Beach for a look at the beautiful golden sand and seafront.
Looking across the beach we can see where Tynemouth Plaza once stood before it burnt down in a fire in 1996.
As we wander along the seafront and beach we come to Longsands Surf School and then up onto Grand Parade where we finish at The Tynemouth Grand Hotel.
Now a bit about the history of what we are seeing:
Tynemouth outdoor swimming pool was first opened on 30th May 1925 and was once one of the area's favourite and most prestigious attractions. It attracted holidaymakers and day trippers from miles around to enjoy swimming in the pool that was filled by the incoming tide of the North Sea!
However, the anticipated marine life never flourished and many residents feel the modifications failed to integrate into the surroundings, and funds are being raised to restore the pool and revitalise this once incredibly popular section of Long Sands Beach Tynemouth
Laurel and Hardy visited Tynemouth twice. On 1932 they stayed just one night at the Grand Hotel, in Percy Gardens.
In the afternoon Stan and Ollie attended a Civic Reception on the terrace at the back of Tynemouth Plaza (now demolished), overlooking the beach (see above), where they later presented prizes to around six hundred local orphans.
In 1952, while appearing at the Newcastle Empire, Laurel and Hardy ended up staying at Grand Hotel, in Tynemouth, as, after a mess up with their reservation, they couldn't get into the North British Station Hotel in Newcastle.
I hope you enjoy this short walk around Tynemouth North Shields just outside Newcastle Upon Tyne on Tyneside. I definitely enjoyed visiting and would recommend a visit to Tynemouth Beach

Aw man the memories from this are awesome. Thank you! My Grandma and Grandpa lived on Percy Park Road in the 80’s and 90’s. I used to stay with them all the time while my mum was at work. I remember the hot summers and folk lining the road heading down to Long Sands. The Shuggy Boats were the best thing ever to me. And the foghorn, I remember that thing blasting regularly. I love going back to visit, I’m still north east, just much further north 🤣

I used to go to the pool as a young lad with a mate or two, never seen so many kids with blue lips, shivering. The pool was filled with sea water, but not from the tide, it was never that high. On rough days the water might splash over the sides a bit, but not intentionally. You knew if the sea had splashed over because there would be sand on the bottom of the pool and everywhere, which actually spoilt it somewhat. The heated indoor pools put paid to this place, like I said, blue lips and shivering is no exaggeration. It is an ideal spot for a new recreational location though, it's been a derelict eyesore for too long now. Plans are in place but not sure of the timescale.

Longsands is a fabulous beach, spent many a wasted hour just walking up and down having a splodge in the sea....The Afternoon Teas at the Grand Hotel are great, been a few times....about a three quarters of a mile away from the hotel is Dockwray Square overlooking the Fish Quay in North Shields...in the middle of the square is a statue of Stan Laurel....he lived there briefly before moving to the US, so he would have known the area well

It will never happen. Used to go to the pool regularly. What killed it was the sea. It was forever being battered by sand and sea driven by the wind. The repeated cleaning exercises were long and expensive. There were times when it was completely swamped a few days after being re-opened. Eventually the sea won and it was abandoned. Very sad. To make it viable once more would require substantial sea defences that I could not imagine being fundable. I would like to be wrong.

I spent most of my youth in that pool, in the summer. The temp of the water hovered around the 60 deg F +/- It was shut, filled with boulders and gradualy filled with sand. A shame.

Looking forward to the Tuesday video, we sailed through Tynemouth on the now defunct Newcastle - Bergen ferry in 1997 and stayed over to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary, The Norway in a Nutshell tour is recommended if a little expensive. If you think Scotland is impressive then Norway is Scotland on steroids, wonderful to visit the “Land of my Fathers”. In 2018 we stayed at The George at Chollarford, a great hotel on the banks of the upper Tyne which I would recommend, and visited the Castle at Tynemouth as well as Corbridge Roman Town, both English Heritage sites by the way.

You never know who you will bump into while walking in this area, a month or so ago you had Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones himself eating in one of the many fish restaurants a mile along the promenade at North shields fish quay, he cycled from Newcastle Tyne bridge to north shields for lunch. It was all over the news channel's. He was here in the area filming the latest Indiana Jones movie at BAMBURGH CASTLE about 40 miles up the Northumberland coast. Not that far from another Hollywood hot spot ALNWICK CASTLE, where they've been filming the latest DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS movie. HARRY POTTER learned to fly his broomstick at ALNWICK CASTLE. around 1910 my grandfather and my great grandmother both used to work for the Duke and duchess of northumberland. BAMBURGH was also named best beach town to visit in the UK 2021 (which magazine UK). The big car park as you come down the bank into north shields fish quay form tynemouth right on the water's edge is a great place to view the mouth of the Tyne especially around 8.45 am you get a great close up view of the DFDS princess seaways coming into the Tyne from Amsterdam. There's always plenty cars parked up , there's a small sandy beach always full of dog walkers next to the promenade, loads of runners and cyclists just like Harrison Ford cycling round the waters edge to tynemouth with an amazing close up view of the river Tyne. Above the fish quay there's a park with a big statue of STAN LAUREL. Stan used to live here as a boy. Remember the movie where they tried to push the piano up the steps to deliver to a house but it kept rolling down, the idea came from some local steps which are still around today. Back to tynemouth Another famous American star who sampled our famous north east fish and chips was JIMMY HENDRIX. He had fish and chips in tynemouth on the 10th March 1967 after playing at a famous old club in Newcastle. My uncle, my mother's younger brother was at that show and he still says it was one of the best live shows he ever saw. Chas Chandler from another well known local band THE ANIMALS became JIMMY HENDRIX manager so Jimmy knew this area very well. 8 months after Jimmy's visit Newcastle was the place for one of the last great speeches of DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

@@GimbalWalkTV The weather is looking great so Google Alnwick castle and the impressive Alnwick gardens, The holy island of Lindisfarne, and not far south Bamburgh castle and a walk down the beautiful sandy beach to the small fishing harbour town of seahouses with its small boat trips over to the farne islands, sea birds and seals galore just off the Northumberland coast, same again great fish and chips,my late mother could remember way back in the 1930's when she was very young having fish and chips at seahouses. And Google Grace Darling 1815 to 1842, a great story, thousands of tourists visit her grave in Bamburgh village, My advice go early the car parks and caravan parks are always packed with tourists. Same with Holy island, Google the amazing history of holy island and the farne islands. you can drive over the causeway at low tide same again go early the carpark as you come to the village on the island gets packed with tourists very quickly. You will also see people as you drive onto the causeway taking their socks and walking boots off and walking over the old way going back centuries. Don't delay, enjoy your filming and the beautiful Northumberland hospitality and scenery.

What do you think? Are the plans for the pool exciting to you?
@ejoldman
@ejoldman Год назад
There have been plans for over 25 years, all a dismal failure. A consortium of firms had a good stab at it late 1990''s, but still nothing came of it. All we have is the picture you saw and empty promises. However North Tyneside Council are very progressive and have made many excellent improvements throughout the region. When you get to Whitley Bay you will see the excellent upgrade the town has benefitted from.
