The heads have been installed (sorry about the missing footage concerning the head install-i forgot!), here I'm in the process of installing cooling tins and pushrod tubes.
Yes. The video is already 10 years old, but the block is much older, designed in 1966 by Porsche for VW, to superseed the small VW beetle block. Most of the air deflector/ baffle plates are simply screwed with M6 *10 with a plillps head. You can replace them with internal hexagons if you like. The centre-srew off the lower air deflector under the head is M5, I though. Tighten but do not overtighten. The central located camshaft is the weakest part of the block. They use only 4 lobes to act on 4 cilinders(!) and lift 8 valves.. So the lobes work overtime as it runs. When you lose power after say 100.000 miles, the lobes are worn down through the 0.4 mm hardened layer and then wear quickly down to 2 mm lift height. In that case revving up to only 1800 revs is possible, but that is the rev-end. A known weakpoint by every typ4 mechanic. Block must be split to change the camshaft. Generally typ-4s are non problematic but can overheat quickly. That is the reason that tuning always ruins it, OR an extreme diameter Porsche blower-fan must be mounted on top of the block, together with a larger oilcooler. Groeten uit NL.
@josemolina93 i would definitely check the case to make sure it's in good shape, it may need align bored, if the crank and rods are within tolerance i would go for it man.... take care!
Hi ya, from down under ( Australia) I love your videos very informative but I think you missed the “ install the heads” part - I was hanging out to find out how the shim gaskets go on the heads Cheers Paul
I love your videos. Great info. Always been a 1600 guy but now I have a 2 liter. What do you think of using an old push rod tube as a drive pin and gently tapping the new tube in place? It keeps from marring the push rod tubes or bending them out of shape! Keep up the good work!
Really good instructional video. I didn't know about the anti-wander wire. And I loved your painted parts. Does that serve any purpose other than letting the important parts stand out for the audience? What kind of paint did you use?
hey man, im trying to rebuild my first motor, an 1835, it was in a sandrail that rolled and the crank got lose and screwed up the cylinders, block looks ok, and so does the crank and cam, heads need to be cleaned and i need new cylinders and pistons. any advise?
Ragamuffin or Anyone working on a Type 4!!!!! I’m seeing a push to spend bigger dollar on 3-5 arm engine stand holder. Do I really need this? Or can I get by with the 2 arm???
