Typeface vs Font
This is one of those graphic design terms that have become completely interchangeable. With people using the word typeface to mean font and vice versa.
They are, however, not the same thing :)
In this short video, I'll show you the difference between a typeface and a font and you too can bore guests at the next party you are at with your typography terminology ;)
Stay Creative!

What other design terminology do you see people mix up that you think would make for a useful video? I'm thinking one that covers tracking and kerning :) Col.

Thanks for this video, exactly what I was looking for. Now, I don't know if this is mainly a problem for me as a non-native speaker, but I hear the terms "type", "text", and "copy" a lot, and I can't really figure out the difference. To me it seems they all mean "a block of text", but I feel there must be some slight differences...

Some people have a different definition. Historically, in metal type, font meant the specific size and style of each typeface, with the word 'font' coming from the physical moulds that produced the metal type. This leads to the definition of 'font' as being the software that produces the typeface. So, for example, 'I wanted to use Times (typeface) but I didn't have the font,' or more specifically, perhaps, 'I wanted to use Times for this book, but it turned out I didn't have the italic font'. In this set of definitions, Times is the printed or on-screen typeface (which refers to the roman regular weight, but often gets used generally for the family) , the Times typeface *family* is composed of the roman, italic, bold and bold italic *styles* (and whatever other designs that are part of the family). Similar but different definitions.

What if the album contained only one track as in the case of mixtapes? In other words the typeface is also the font.
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 4 года назад
That is how I've always looked at it. If the typeface is made up of just one weight, then you could call it a typeface or a font :)

Im taking a typography course for college , and one of the questions on my quiz was "how is a font different from a typeface?" and I keep it simple by saying the difference was "styles and weight". Now, my professor said I was wrong and marked it incorrect, but you said it yourself that a font makes up of different styles and weights. am Im incorrect for the answer I placed on my quiz? Cause if I am correct, I am going to fight him on it.
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 6 лет назад
Hey Tamara, A Typeface is a collection of different weights and styles of font from the same family, for example, Futura. A font is one specific weight or style from that typeface, for example, Futura Bold. I hope that helps.
@rayzhong8542
@rayzhong8542 5 лет назад
There are two definitions for the word font: one is a specific weight or style of a typeface. The other is a _vessel_ of a set of characters. This could mean a set of metal or wood pieces or a digital file that contains information about how to render a typeface on the screen. The vessel definition is more accurate and clear. I'm sure that's your professor's answer. A typeface is what you see, the design. A font is what you use, the file. Typeface designers create the typeface, the design. You download and install the fonts, the ttf or otf files. Using the music analogy, the typeface is the song, and the font is the mp3 file.

@@RockYourBrand what do you mean by same family ,sir?
@RockYourBrand
@RockYourBrand 4 года назад
@@obliviondentity6019, great question. A font family is a set of fonts that have a common design. An example of a font family is Times New Roman, which consists of roman, italic, bold and bold italic version of the same typeface.

I think you got mixed up between 'font' and 'type family'. What you call "font" is actually type family not font. Font is the show of typeface in one size and one style..
