A very helpful pattern in this mate is to sack a piece in the h file to deliver the mate. Very instructive video, thanks!

*Remember that the rook is cutting off the king, not allowing him to leave the file, while the knight is just one square diagonally away from the king*

Great video. Last example though, the Q sacrifice is completely dramatic. CM could have been achieved with a KF6 move without the sacrifice. Then you nail it in with the RH7.

The sac is needed to remove the bishop, else bishop simply takes your rook on h7. You may have thought the bishop is pinned by the queen, but the king has moved to h8 in this line which breaks the pin.

Love your videos, Jonathan. Unfortunately, the number of ads really makes them hard to watch. I know you are just starting out and don't yet get as many views as you deserve. However, with the high quality content that you are producing and fewer ads I think you will quickly be on your way to many more subscribers!

It's not clear to me exactly what constitutes an arabian mate. Would 'A rook and knight mates a king near a corner' be a reasonable description?

That was the most useless queen sacrifice I've ever seen 10:54
@EsotericStarWarsRubbish
@EsotericStarWarsRubbish 4 года назад
Useless? If you didn’t do the sac, the bishop would take the rook back on H7. This would blunder the checkmate and it’s exactly why the queen sac is necessary for the checkmate to work...
@DanJustCant
@DanJustCant 4 года назад
Imagine not calculating the reason behind the move
@maxkho00
@maxkho00 4 года назад
@@EsotericStarWarsRubbish Actually, no, the queen sac wasn't necessary at all. It was mostly just a show-off, because the natural Nf6+ also wins in 2 moves after Kh8, Rxh7+, Bxh7, Qg8# and is obviously easier to see.
@maxkho00
@maxkho00 4 года назад
@@DanJustCant They did calculate it, and they're right.
@EsotericStarWarsRubbish
@EsotericStarWarsRubbish 4 года назад
@Max Khovansky dude... Qg8 would not be mate because the bishop on h7 would take it back. So you’ve blundered a rook, queen, and mate.
