How to improve your layout and design? How to get better at typography?
If you are interested in the typography course, check it out here - bit.ly/Type01_yt
How can you improve your typography designs without the help of professional instructors? We understand that the design process can be tough without guidance through the process. If you want to learn why basic typography skills matter, this critique is for you.
In this episode, we asked students from our Typography 01 class to submit their assignments to receive critiques. Chris Do and Milka Broukhim conduct the critique live and review multiple student projects, good and bad!
In this part 6 of 7 critique episodes, we will review the concept of grouping sections based on importance and hierarchy, using Rules & Shapes

By the time we're done I'll have watched something like 15 hours of type critique in this series. What a generous investment you're all making. Looking back at my own work the past 6 weeks I see improvement already. Looking forward to taking the futur's typography class when my rich uncle dies.

I've seen all 5 previous lessons, and I was inspired and thankful for your job guys. But the introduction of Mirka and especially Chris about the rules of lines and shapes in this lesson, and the examples provided, are just gold. And I'm not even a designer! Thank you The Futur!

I feel so lucky to watch this video on RU-vid. I would like to say thank you to the two teachers, they have been very helpful to me. I'm from Taiwan. My English is not very good, but I'm working on it. So I used Google translate, there may be some grammatical mistakes. (Thanks RU-vid for subtitle translation. I'm love it.) In my college days, my teachers always only asked us to do good and beautiful homework, they would just tell you that your homework this week was to make a logo. Then you hand in your homework, If you do well, their highest praise is only "not bad", they won't give you too much praise; If you do bad, they would judgement "醜 (Chǒu)" that mean is ugly,or told you it was terrible, very very veeeeeery bad.And throw your homework on the ground like trash. That was a very bad class experience, hope no one else has the same experience as us In week1 to week7 video, I got a lot of encouragement, I'm feeling is good and kindness, I appreciates all this videos and teachers.

I love the original design in 50:00, It really looks like you look up the skyscraper from the ground. I have watched Typography critique for 6 weeks, to be honest, the former 5 weeks you and Milke always gave me surprise. But in this week, I was a little disappointed to see many wonderful designs were altered toooo much. Perhaps, I was wrong. 😀 The main reason that I love to see your videos is that I can learn a lot of techniques (a slight movement can change a lot). By the way, great jobs, Chris and Milka!

Create or listen to the conversation between you and what is going on on the page. I'll do that. I have a studio, so it's fine to have a conversation w/myself out loud. I will embrace that interpersonal relationship as opposed to edit it as I go along. "let things bloom and then weed and prune." Perhaps the relationships is derived from adoration of those we admire. I love Pollock and Kandinsky and I love their craft and form for entirely deferent reasons.

Design with your foot on the gas pedal. I get that and it slaps inspiration at every level. Let's see what will happen once I have apply it. Like curves in the road though, once the the gas is applied, I should be aware of the purpose and what is decretive and then recognize the benefit of the brake pedal. For a guy like me that loves competition and the race, speed and very fast things rules my thoughts... I know I am at my best and quickest when I've applied the brakes and ignored the impulse to apply the gas to win the race.

@@milka1502 totally inspired. You compliment Chris really well. I have a lot gain from practicing the fundamentals. I also need to give it much more priority than I have. Stick to a plan of practicing to the degree of a craftsman that show how much they enjoy the learning process. I don't do this work for money. As an artist I need to focus on creating the work towards better work and respect the continuum. You can improve because you thing it so, I know I must do and repeat it. To be frank, I need to decide how much I love to work with type and for that matter produce good work? Savor the process as opposed to "just" getting it done. I have a number of distractions but of of them, working with type and writing are are the distractions I always return too. I believe it is time to roll up my sleeves and get the most meaningful work done. It won't occur on its own. Thank you for dedicating your time, your appreciation for the art of design and learning shines through.

I love this video and I'm a big fan of the Futur, because I've learnt so much by watching your videos! I have one question about cutting off the letter "R", you mentioned that as long as one recognises the letterform they can tell the difference between a letter "R" and "B"-which I agree. However, what happens if you are designing for the general public, and not too many of them are familiar with letter forms and at a glance it might seem like a "B" instead? Would you still recommend to cut off the letter "R" or would it be better to just experiment and play around with other design forms instead?
