Pretty ballsy of Wizards to re-release a book that wouldn't exist without the involvement of a third party company after what they pulled with the OGL. They even removed the Kobold Press logo from the back of the book but it still has it on the first page most likely as a contractual obligation.
That's understandable. I choose to support my local game store since RPG sales are a big part of their business, plus Wizards makes money when stores buy the books, not the customer. I haven't followed Black Flag much but I'll have a closer look.
Nice video Dave. I have personally stopped collecting D&D but still give love to the collection I have already amassed. Not only are they good for running a D&D game but are also powerful idea mines for any fantasy ttrpg. I love your videos Dave, keep up the good work. 👍
Love the new cover on the single book... really nice art. However have to say I feel a bit disappointing that they don't have anything that would help people plug in from any of the starter sets or the essentials kit. Would be a good way to get people to keep using Characters they have into a longer campaign.
I'm running a campaign that ran through Lost Mines and integrated the story from LMoP to Tyranny of Dragons. An easy way to add hints of another side plot (but will develop into the main plot, HotDQ) is using the cultists visiting Venomfang at Thundertree, Hamun Cost the Red Wizard, and perhaps learning that Neznar is working with the cult of the dragon in helping obtain the Forge of Spells, to add to the Dragon Queen's hoard. Upon arriving back at Phandalin, the players may find it under attack by the Adult Blue Dragon and raiding cultists and kobolds (replacing Greennest). From here the travel portion can be skipped and the DM can go straight to Raiders Camp or to Castle Naerytar, which I personally did Raider Camp, then Naerytar.
It was the first 5e campaign I played and I liked it a lot. I picked up the compilation years later and just started running it. I like it a lot. I actually loved the first three campaigns that came out for 5e and feel everything went down in quality since then, but I seem to be alone in that regard. Cheers!
Extremely Awesome, Wonderful & Amazing Video by you Sir as always! Fabulous Work! I have the New Tyranny Dragons Book & Hoard of the Dragon Queen. The Rise of Tiamat is too expensive for me. eBay has it for $150.00. I won't pay it. Anyway, I love this video, Thx so much 4 making it. Bravo!!👽😉😉
I'm guessing no one has finished Dragonlance yet, but Tyranny of Dragons seems awfully similar in structure to it. Do people have a preference of one over the other?
Love the cover. Is... does it depict Tiamat creating the first Gray dragon from a Fang dragon egg? Or a Yellow, Orange, Purple or Brown one? She IS all chromatic colors after all. A sister having them or lost children are other open explanations I've heard and read about
I’ve run several different groups through Tyranny of Dragons. From the original 2 books to the updated special edition. I absolutely love this adventure. Yes I had to do some work to make the adventure run smooth but it’s the most fun I’ve had running a published campaign. So. Much. Fun. Oh and I’m with you about black dragons, by far my favorite dragon.
The write up for this product says "Tyranny of Dragons combines and refines two action-packed D&D adventures". What changes did they make to use the word "refine"? Thanks.
I'll have to look into it a little further and get back to you next week, I do know that it incorporated errata into it but I can't remember the specifics.
It will be interesting to see how it sells. There are definitely a lot of people who seem completely oblivious to what's going on in the hobby right now.
@@stephenchalmers71 actually after seeing the full video I understand that the earlier editions are discontinued, so it makes sense they have released this one. But for sure that these guys are "under monetised" so they have been pulling all dirty moves and all I see is ways to rip us off...
No, that takes place in Mercer's homebrew world. The setting and story is original to his game. The Chroma Conclave also uses the chromatic dragons as the BBEG, but that's where the similarities end.
For something that was touted as one of the worst campaign ever released, Wizards surely confident that many will still buying this. I had the 2019 edition and planning to run it as the continuation of my group's current campaign. Sure, it needs modification here and there but it looks very promising. Ed: That new cover art looks great!
They are fine books. Though, like you said, got a lot of flack. The first ‘too railroaded’ and the second was more open. Quire frankly, never saw the issue… …but I’ve never ran a campaign strictly by a book. Closest was PotA from WotC. Even then, players and GM have other goals. 5e books have served as a key to inspiration, some having more content used than others. Also, for us, not a 5e rules fan… …some of us really like magic. 😉
@@epicbrowndragon too railroaded not always bad. Especially for my group, mostly new to this game (me included), too many options and the need to explore sandbox setting sometimes can be overwhelming...
@@benerio1664 Totally hear you, and agree. I personally had no issues with it, and thought the negative press was unwarranted. While I’m happy they did go with larger books, (not splitting the adventure into 2 books with each campaign) I did like having the two different art covers.
Not Happy with Wotc/Hasbro. Not happy about DnDOne. That being said, I will purchase this book even though I have the original and Alt cover releases because Kobold press was involved and this was still a 5E campaign when they were really doing great things. Still love 5E and our group will continue playing it. When we move to the next “edition” it won’t be Wotc. 😢. Love your channel and you do great work. Keep it up!!
Ouch. I’ve always had mad respect for you but it seems kind of weird to be sporting this new book-the third version of the same adventure-during this time. Especially considering it wouldn’t be a thing without a third-party creator….And a creator that has taken such a public stand against the company at that. When I saw the cover on the video I figured you had received it from WotC and were honoring that agreement. The fact you specifically went and picked it up on your own just makes things weirder. I’m all for supporting one’s local game store, but certainly they had something there that appealed to you outside of a WotC product. I can’t tell if you don’t know about what is going on or that you simply don’t care. Your remark about the potential rough period that local game shops might be facing would seem to indicate you are aware. And that makes it all the more puzzling, given your history of supporting other publishers and other ttrpg game systems. I’ve always respected that you do your own thing. And as a PF2e player it’s been a blast these last couple years seeing you champion much of Paizo’s material. In addition, I enjoyed your coverage of the Alien ttrpg. But we all make our choices, I guess. So please take care. You’ve always come across to me as a cool dude. You seem really nice. So I wish you continued success moving forward.
I bought this to support my local game store and it is an adventure I personally like. I'm sorry you feel the way that you do, but the creators who worked on this book, the artists and Kobold Press aren't responsible for decisions of Hasbro, their Shareholders and upper management. Many of the currently planned 5E products were already completed once again by people who care about the hobby and have no control over the current situation and I plan to support the creators in spite of how crappy their management team is.
@@DravenSwiftbow I get it. But as we just saw, this is your third copy of the same adventure. That’s what confuses me. It’s not like you chose to go pick up a book from a third party publisher from your local game store. That would have supported both the publisher AND the local game store. I’ve watched numerous videos over the last few days of RPGTubers doing it. It’s not even like you went to grab a totally new product that would have supported those genuinely good people you speak of trapped inside WotC. And if you had a history of being a 5e shill, I’d at least understand. But you don’t. You have a strong history on this channel of supporting the lesser popular systems like Pathfinder and Call Of Chuthulu. That’s been a major source of my respect for you. I’ve noticed over the years that certain other channels that trumpet 5e have talked a big game about supporting the “little guys”, but magically never seem to showcase their stuff. You do! And that’s what I’m most confused about. Instead of picking up something new for yourself, or even something that you already have from a smaller publisher and choosing to do a giveaway or something to help spread that system, you grabbed a three-peat of a product whose actual creators aren’t even there any longer. It just seems contradictory to your message and to your channel, historically speaking. And hey, maybe you’re the kind of guy that needs every version of the same adventure. I get that. I can go that route over the products I care most about, too. But it just seems contradictory to then put up a video showcasing it when none of that money will will go towards the group of people that helped create the book. Sure. Spend your money how you want. But sitting and watching this video makes me feel icky. Clearly that’s a me problem and not a you problem. But I at least wanted to make it clear why I couldn’t support this video and possibly this channel moving forward. As always good luck. Aside from this most recent video I’ve loved your channel and your reviews. And congrats on hitting 10k subs. It’s well deserved.
