Tyrion Lannister's romantic relationships in A Song of Ice and Fire are a strange facet of the story at large. Tysha, Shae, and Sansa Stark have all played significant roles in his development as a character, even if those developments aren't beneficial for anyone.

The worse part if Tyrions white washing was how they reduced Sansa. Book Sansa resisted in the few ways a powerless girl could. She tried to run but the kingsguard took her at knife point. She also refused to kneel her own way of protesting.

Tyrion always reminded me of the old autobiographies from authors I used to read. He could be incredibly emotive, self-reflective and in awe of the world around him. But at the end, anything that wasn’t in his specific image was dismissed. He cares about the common people until they dislike him, then he’ll be smug at their deaths. He is a very intelligent man so thinks people should admire him, but because they don’t he solely sees them as judgemental and prejudiced (which is partly true in fairness). He claims to care deeply for the women in his life, but only speaks well of them if they do what he wants. He has a imperial-patriarchal mindset, but pretends he doesn’t know what either word is, or the impact, in spite of clearly taking advantage of the system for his own benefit. This is a very specific and insidious type of privilege, as it pretends the power dynamic does not exist at all. He is the sort of man that would (rightfully) scorn a person for causing harm to another, but views the harm he causes as righteous and justice. Thought processes like this often end up causing more harm, as he has rationalised his actions and now only sees his version of the story as truth. To give it a GOT metaphor, Tyrion knows how the wheel crushes him, but refuses to take note of the suffering of others, or the part he plays in it. This ultimately leads him to be an uncaring and dangerous person to be in close proximity of. For the women in his life, this means attempting to rationalise with him about his behaviour is virtually impossible, as he has already picked the narrative in his mind, and will only accept evidence that supports him, and will be actively hostile to anything that stands against him. He is a character unable to provide real love, as he sees it as a claim or exchange rather than a mutual bond. Love is something he takes, and he fully expects the woman to be grateful.

Tyrion is classic example of the saying of; 'Every villain is a hero of his or her own story.’ I think the show did a major disservice by watering down Tyrion’s more dubious aspects. Giving how excellent Peter Dinklage portrayed the character, it would have been a pure delight to see him become more antagonistic as the seasons progressed. That said, Tyrion most heroic moments are when he helps Bran and him slapping Joffrey.

I found the Tyrion/Shae/Sansa dynamic in the show fascinating. He was opposed to the marriage, did everything he could to make her comfortable and protect her from his family, and genuinely seemed okay at the idea that she would never want him. Meanwhile, Shane’s grudging feelings for Tyrion (that she obviously didn’t want) contrasted with her fierce protectiveness of Sansa seemed to give her a lot of power in the relationship between the three of them. And Sansa slowly becoming friends with Tyrion (sheep shifting!) while looking up to Shae was adorable, a tiny glimpse at happiness and safety in the midst of her horror. It was a much happier story than we got in the book, and it seemed disjointed when he killed Shae and seemed to resent Sansa for leaving him. Just an early example of how the show’s re-characterization of people made their book-dictated resolutions seem strange. Book Tyrion, as you point out, is a whole different beast. Either way, book or show, Shae and Sansa deserve better. (Especially Shae).
@HillsAliveYT
@HillsAliveYT Год назад
Yeah, from a filmmaking and storytelling perspective I thought that creating the connection with Shae and Sansa was actually pretty smart, because in the books Sansa's narrative is incredibly internal so having another character in the show that she can externalize her thoughts and feelings with made it way easier to adapt her storyline. But I'm incredibly disappointed with where it ended up, and I'm very disappointed that they just had Shae make a full heel turn even though the actress playing her rightfully pointed out that it was absurdly out of character and argued that they should change it.
@lyamainu
@lyamainu Год назад
@@HillsAliveYT And it was pointless. In the show he was made a heroic character, never turned evil or anything. It's not like it was supposed to be foreshadowing for anything - at least not something they did in the show. Maybe in the books its going to be an important character moment to have Tyrion kill her - it definitely fits with his inability to see his romantic partners as human beings. For Tysha, betraying him to his father makes perfect sense - she never loved him the way Shae did. He was always a man with power over her who insisted she pretend to love him or she'd lose her meal ticket. Shae... maybe. MAYBE she would work with Tywin if she thought Tyrion was dead either way, but she might be able to survive. But she deserved to have the show explore that, and her relationship with Tyrion as presented in the show would have demanded him giving her the chance to explain... and probably understand the explanation. Honestly, I've sort of mentally written it off in show!verse; instead, he finds her, gives her the necklace/money/an escort out of the city to start over somewhere far away, and then he goes and kills Tywin. It does fit for book Tyrion though. I would have LOVED to see Shae and Sansa meet up again post- Ramsay/Littlefinger. Shae would make an AWESOME Master of Whispers for the Queen in the North.

8:39 Thank you for pointing out the fact that Tyrion has unreasonable expectations of loyalty. It's not something that was obvious to me the first time I read the books or watched the show. I am currently going through my first re-read of *_ASOIAF,_* and not long ago, I read the chapter where he kills Shae and Tywin, and I made 2 interesting observations. The first is that Shae doesn't attack Tyrion like in the show, which presents her death as self-defense. It's something I had completely forgotten. Instead, she tries to explain herself, which again, is something she doesn't do in #GoT. They made Shae somewhat of a willing participant in Tyrion's downfall, as revenge for breaking up with her because he was trying to protect her. They basically made Shae a villain, so that we are fully on Tyrion's side when he kills her. The 2nd observation I made that really boggled me is that Tyrion doesn't seem to be angry at Shae or Tywin for sleeping together. He seems solely angry at her for testifying against him, which makes sense, but there is a host of unexamined issues linked to the fact that Tywin slept with her. Tywin has repeatedly chastised Tyrion for sleeping with sex workers, which suggests that it's something he unequivocally doesn't partake in because he considers it below him. The fact that he turned out to be a complete hypocrite should have rung alarm bells for Tyrion. When Cersei is alerted of Tywin's death in her first POV chapter in *_AFFC,_* she is also shocked at the revelation that her father bedded "whores". In a *_ACOK,_* when Varys sneaks Shae through secret passageways, so she can clandestinely meet Tyrion, he reveals to him, that he used to sneak sex workers all the time for a previous Hand. Varys doesn't name the Hand, but on re-read, it's obvious that he was referring to Tywin. The fact that Tyrion is so much like his father in this very specific area of his life should have rung alarm bells. I know the Tysha business was more important, but I was shocked that Tyrion didn't call out his father for his total hypocrisy.

Tyrion is frustrating in that he wants to be a good guy, but he doesn’t want to have to sacrifice anything to get there. He wants Shae to love him, he doesn’t want to be loving towards her. He wants Sansa to think he’s a hero, but he doesn’t want to do anything heroic for her. Even in the TV show, it’s the same, he’s no more kind to here there than in the show. Another banger, I am so impressed that you can keep putting out brand new and insightful analysis on a series that hasn't had new content for the main books in 11 years. While uncommon in the majority of the fanbase, I do think that your analysis of ASOIAF is probably the closest to what GRRM actually intended, given how hidden but how thematically consistent it is. I have had this idea recently about an argument in favor of the greens in HOTD and F&B. Most lords should support Aegon because he is more westerosi than Rhaenyra and the blacks. His mother is from one of the oldest houses in westeros, he draws his legitimacy from westerosi inheritance laws and the symbols of Aegon I, who seemed very in tune with how to govern in a westerosi fashion (after the whole bloody conquest bit). In contrast to the blacks, he is not a Valyrian supremacist, and (at the start of the dance) no one on the green side is as dangerous as Daemon. In contrast to Rhaenyra and the blacks who are a very Valyrian group, with lots of crazy incest and self-contained betrothals, limiting their ability to form alliances. Daeron is still able to marry, same with Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, and Aemond is engaged to a Baratheon. From the perspective of a normal lord in westeros, Aegon II and the greens seems like a pretty good choice in contrast to Rhaenyra and Daemon. While I personally still support the blacks as a modern audience member, I think that lords in westeros should have supported the greens.
@HillsAliveYT

Yeah totes, I mean I like House Hightower in general so I'm clearly biased, but the notion that Viserys was somehow marrying down by marrying a Hightower is so bizarre to me because they are like literally the number one Westerosi house that you want to marry into in order to solidify your power. To be honest I think if it were not for the fact that so many lords swore an oath to Rhaenyra it wouldn't have even been a question, literally almost everyone would have supported Aegon over her.

Your observations on Tyrion reminded me of the last season of Bojack Horseman, specifically when he is confronted with the power he exerts over women and seems to be oblivious to - or perhaps wilfully ignores - in order to fit the narrative he has created in his head. Like, both these characters have been severely abused and therefore carry a lot of trauma, both of them have some self-awareness (although limited) and cynic views on the world, and both view themselves as victims - which they are, but that only extends to a certain point. Alas, this self-image allows them to construct all these narratives that explain and even excuse their most questionable actions - be it conscious or subconsciously. I hope in the next installments of the book series Tyrion goes through something kinda similar to what has happened in Bojack season 6, with him finally having to face how his excuses, self pity and dismissal of his own privilege have affected the people around him, particularly those with less power than him - although people can be really resistant to change, so I don't think he will actually modify his point of view that much. I also find Tyrions relationship with Penny interesting. Penny's status in society as a dwarf, as a woman, and as a commoner put her miles below Tyrion. Yet Tyrion consistently victimizes himself and doesnt quite understand why Penny retains hope and optimism in a world that has treated her so cruelly. Yet, more revealing is that Penny expresses romantic interest in Tyrion and he totally rejects that notiom because Penny is a dwarf, because Penny isnt beautiful like Sansa or even Shae. His relationship with Penny truly examines his toxic and warped views of women as romantic interest as well as his own self hatred for being a dwarf.

Yes, but it definitely won’t be Sansa standing for Tysha. Nobles standing for small folk, bastards, or “fallen” women goes against the theme sets of “bastard sacrifice in place of nobles” or “Shadow/black/night woman scorned “. Admittedly I’m not sure how this will play out, there’s a allusion or two to it somewhere. The fairytale about the red dwarf seems to apply but doesn’t give a clear conclusion for ASOIAF. Tatterhood Scandinavian tale, amongst many things in ASOIAF, tells about Penny’s probable death by Tyrion (Tyrion’s death fake out), but not the resolution of Tyrion’s theme arc… I think. Anyway Penny should be added to this list of women for Tyrion. She’s the counterpoint to Tyrion’s rejection of Sansa’s rejection, himself rejecting Penny for some of Sansa’s reasons for rejecting him and rejecting Penny acting like Tysha and Shea to him which he claims is all he needs or wants but yet Penny doesn’t somehow fulfill that need.

Love your take on this character. I saw the show before I read the books (I'm just past the assault you mentioned in the last book) and he is nothing like what I saw throughout all seasons of the show. His book version is not someone I can genuinely root for except for the times he is actually being abused because of his disability, especially by his own family. But like you mentioned, his treatment of women is terrifying and his narration of events terribly unreliable and dehumanising of others, especially women, to the point that throughout his pov chapters, you have to constantly remind yourself of the ages of Shae and Sansa, and their actual position there in even aside from his involvement in their lives, before reconsidering the story he tells in context of their individual circumstances in contrast with his delirious expectations of them. He is especially incapable of true empathy for women above all else. And feels good to hear someone not glossing over or normalising those behaviours and traits of his.

Brilliant as always! You’ve led me to reconsider the unconscious pass I’ve given to Tyrion on the basis of his wit and being on trial for being a dwarf his entire life. The one thing I would add is that in the show (book as well??) Tyrion says of Bran “if you’re going to be a cripple, it’s better to be a rich cripple.” This seems to emerge from his own experience of being a rich dwarf, suggesting he has at least some awareness of his privileged position.

5:07 *_Could Peter Dinklage be one of the reasons why the show didn't want to explore Tyrion's darkness?_* I think it's conceivable that the responsibility of *dwarfism representation* and its impact might have been considered. Not to the extent that the writers care deeply about dwarfiam representation, but to the extent that they would not want to upset *Peter Dinklage* who has dwarfism. I can certainly imagine the scenarios where either the writers are too scared to tell Peter Dinklage they want to take Tyrion's character to this very dark place, because they know he'd categorically refuse and are afraid to offend him. Or they do have the courage to ask him, but he unequivocally rejects the idea, and takes great offense at the suggestion. From the point of view of the actor, I can certainly understand why *Peter Dinklage* would be completely against it. As far as I know, Tyrion's darkness in the books is not reflective of any real life stereotypes or media tropes about people with dwarfism. However, long before he called out Disney for their planned depiction of dwarfs in the upcoming live adaptation of Snow White, I had always wondered if *Dinklage* felt any responsibility towards the dwarf community in terms of representation, especially towards the actors in that community. I've always wanted a journalist to ask him about it, because he seems to be the only actor with dwarfism to have made it big in Hollywood with meaty, compelling roles. I know there's the actor from *_Willow_* and *_LOTR,_* but personally, *Dinklage* is the only actor with dwarfism that I know by name. I'm willing to bet that that's also the case for millions of audience members. He's the only actor with brand name and face recognition, and probably the most bankable. Hence why I was always surprised that I had never heard *Dinklage* advocate for more people with dwarfism in film & TV, because they are so underrepresented, and when they are, it's often small stereotypical roles where they are the butt of jokes. *_Game of Thrones_* was not *Dinklage* 's first big break (go watch *_The Station Agent,_* it's great!), but it was certainly his biggest. Given the exceptional position he was in at the height of #GoT's success, I can imagine him having major reservations about taking his character to such a dark place, because it would be a very negative representation of people with dwarfism, when there are so few, and so few compelling ones. What do you think? Do you believe *Dinklage* would have agreed to explore Tyrion's darkness in the show if the writers had proposed it to him? Even if he didn't have dwarfism, at that stage of his career, I could still see him refuse.

@@hinasakukimi You make a valid point. No one wants to be tokenized. It hearkens back to the issue of bad representation vs no representation. All that being said, even if neither Tyrion or Dinklage had dwarfism, I can still imagine Dinklage having reservations about taking his character to such a dark place. Mostly because #GoT was his biggest break by far as an actor, his character was beloved, and he may not have wanted to "waste" that capital. It's not uncommon for actors to refuse roles, or ask for changes on their character because they don't like where their arc is going. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong, but most of the time you only have the power to do that when you have a lot of leverage. The point I'm about to make has nothing to do with how nice they made Tyrion in the show: Tyrion and Tysha were preteens when they had sex for the first time. They had no idea what they were doing, and they were too young to be doing it. Of course she cried. She was a kid. The first time, more often than not, especially that young, will be painful. She also had a ton of wine in her system. It was not an appropriate experience for either of them. Also, saying "I broke her maidenhead" is no different that saying "I popped her cherry", or basically, he was the guy who took her virginity. He's boasting.

Tyrion describes her as being on a red blanket, and thinks about telling Sansa that she was from a noble house who's symbol was one gold coin, several silver ones on a red field. Considering what Tywin's fifty guards and Tyrion did, it sounds like none of them were gentle and that she may have ended up bleeding out as a result.

Incredible Video about my favourite Book-Character, not the Show-Version although I think Peter Dinklage could have acted the real Book-Tyrion out on the Screen, he is a good Actor. What I like about Tyrion is the fact that he is not capable to face the truth mostly about himself and always thinks he is better than everyone else. That makes his PoV so fascinating, you can't stop thinking how could that happen? Especially when he comes to Essos and makes his way to Daenerys, I am constantly wondering, do we see what is there? Or is Tyrion's PoV too warped to give us actually not entirely biased information? Many PoV-Characters in ASOIAF think of themself less than they deserve at some point, Tyrion never does this, he always thinks of himself as the Hero. If someone/something doesn't fit in that Narrative that is the fault of the others, they manipulate the picture the rest of the World gets. But actually, that is not true. He is not the Nice Guy, and even then being Nice should be normal behaviour when it comes to social interaction with anyone and it should never be tied to expectations towards the Person you were nice to. But Tyrion is only nice when he hopes to get something out of it. I already mentioned on your last Video that I think Book-Tyrion would use the information Sansa would give him, to throw Jon under the Bus, so that he would stay in a better light and be praised as the Hero or something similar. I think at the End Tyrion will survive, I just don't think that he will be a free Man. Either he is banished (either to the true North with the Free Folk or to Essos) or he becomes a Maester, at least something where Women are not that much in the Picture. A lot of my Friends think that Tyrion will end up at the Wall, I am a strong believer that the Wall will fall and vanish at the End of the Series. So there will be no Nightswatch anymore and therefore Tyrion Can't be a part of it. The second Reason why I think Tyrion will be a Maester or at least start his Education at the Citadel, we were told in his first or second Chapter that he reads a lot, but during the whole Series, all 5 published Books, we don't see him read anything or at least I can't remember that we did see him read. Not like Sam who tells us what he read, we know where he reads and even why. I think there are 3 Main Problems in these Books: 1. The Food-Problem, 2. The Monarchy (a Problem in itself) and the Desire for Power and 3. The Forgotten Knowledge. In the end, all of the remaining PoV's will be part of the Solution and Tyrion I think will be Part of the Knowledge-Solution, which is the Reason I think he will end as a silent Man in the Citadel, because yes, I think he will lose his Tongue, honestly his Mouth brings more problems than it is worth.

I am actually one of the believers in the Tyrion joining the Night's Watch theory just because there is so much foreshadowing of it in book 1 and because it very neatly wraps up his arc and takes him away from everything that made him so villainous in the first place. But his skewed POV might be the most hilariously bonkers in the entire series, like what perfectly sums up his weird disconnection from reality to me is when he's outrageously offended by Cersei's belief that he would rape Tommen when he literally said he would rape Tommen. Like, bruh, what planet are you even on.

His father despises him for being a dwarf, not for being a lecher and drunkard that everyone knows from Dorne to the Wall. He craves power for sake of having it over others, not because he has some plans how to use it to benefit his family or Westerlands. He's disgusted by the idea of being romantically involved with a dwarf woman but expects other women to truly and fully love him. He wants others to risk their lives for him or simply go to their deaths for him when he's not willing to do the same for them or anyone at all. There is also an aspect of if Tyrion considers a person to be an outcast as well. When he talks with Jon at the feast, as well as at the wall, he mentions an affinity for broken things/people as well as bastards. He alludes to the same sentiment again when delivering the plans for the saddle that would allow Bran the freedom to ride. Sansa in King’s Landing at this time is an outsider and is broken by her experiences to this point. So it is on brand for him to have his soft spot for her throughout all of their time together at Kings Landing. I also think she will have recovered enough by the time she and Tyrion reunite to move from her earlier broken/bastard classification to one of traditional noble woman. Some good feelings may transfer, however she will be traditionally attractive (I’m assuming GRRM doesn’t write a huge twist in this regard) and therefore will fit naturally with society in a way she couldn’t before.

Another example of how he sees himself as a main character and perpetual victim is the sacking of kings landing where he desperately wants accolades and praise for the wildfire trick which could have only happened because of him finding Cersei’s storage of wildfire. 5:07 The show definitely failed to explore Tyrion's dark side, and did so deliberately. The question is why? The most probable reason is that they didn't want to expand the story further, which explains why so many characters got horribly short-changed. Obviously, part of me believes it's also because Tyrion is a fan favorite, and they don't trust themselves or the audience to redeem him once they've come face to face with the darkness of what he's capable of when it comes to his relationship with women and sex. The fact that #HotD felt compelled to explicitly point out to the audience the ickiness of incest and adult/child marriages specifically through Viserys, a Targaryen, speaks to the fact that the writers don't trust the audience to understand and accept the fictional reality of Westeros. Surprisingly no, (personally), if only because the author is clearly feminist himself. It’s clear that he doesn’t approve of treating women this way, even if his POV characters never necessarily realise that, and it’s with characters like Sansa, Arya and Daenerys and others that helps highlight this point. By a certain point in the books, it’s kind of obvious anyway that the women are the ones pulling the political strings, even if the men are completely unaware of it, and that’s its own breed of satisfying lol. He sees his female characters as their own tangible characters with their own journeys, rather than plot devices to further the journeys of his male characters, which it may seem like if we didn’t have any female POV characters. Honestly, I take more issue with the show’s portrayal of women than the books so far. But yeah, it can be quite frustrating to read male POVs, or even female POVs that think this way, particularly when it’s characters such as Tyrion who are meant to be morally better than some of the other characters, and who are so widely beloved by a community of men who are stuck in the mindset of Tyrion = good and therefore might not see the issues with it. How ASoIaF might affect the men who read or watch it is more a concern for me personally rather than the text itself

That seems to be a pretty consistent theme with Dany in general, people think she's easy to influence or control because she's young and uneducated, and then one day it blows tf up in their faces. Given that Tyrion always thinks he can outsmart everyone, I expect there to be significant blowback for thinking Dany and her forces are something that he can direct and control.

I think Tyrion's entitlement around women is real, but I also think it's normalized among Westerosi nobles. Think of Robert routinely abusing his authority over both common and noble women, getting them pregnant and leaving, creating major problems in their lives. Then consider that Robert was considered charitable in that he supported his bastards. It is generally considered normal for noblemen to knock up common women--an abuse of authority--and then abandon them with the child in a world where unmarried mothers endure considerable prejudice. So to me this brings up the question: to what extent do we judge Tyrion based on our morals, and to what degree do we judge him in the context of his society? Obviously there are plenty of men in the narrative who are not exploitative--Jon Snow responds to the injustices of his supposed birth by vowing never to create a bastard child, but he's probably the most one-sidedly heroic character in the books. So do we forgive Tyrion for being a product of his society, or do we criticize him for ignoring the injustices that he benefits from?

However, that being said, I think yoit analysis can be a little biased sometimes. While I'm not denying the atrocious actions and views Tyrion can have, it should also be said that when he chose to marry Sansa, he initially thought his father's idea cruel. Tywin asks him if he plans on mistreating her and Tyrion consented he wasn't. He also gives her an out on their wedding day, willing to call it off. He makes attempts to bond with her, talk with her, brings up going to Casterly Rock for a visit away from court and his family. The point is Tyrion DOES make genuine efforts with people but it's people that aren't receptive and that rejection fuels his hatred and control further. To him its justification (wrongly course). That's the beauty of Martin's way of writing. His characters are incredibly complex and all but a few rads examples are not wholly good or wholly evil.

Obviously this is well known but I think that it is emblematic of the core problem with the show overall. They were too concerned with the audience, be it meeting our desires or "subverting" our expectations. Rather than trying to create a good overall story, they wanted to create more things that would make people talk and make people react in some way.

My guess is that Tysha ends up working for Littlefinger and Littlefinger knows all about Tyrion's and Tysha's relationship. As Tywin tried to tell Tyrion "Where do whores go?" Well they go to Littlefinger. It's really sad how the producers of GOT altered such a wonderful, yet sad character as Tyrion Lannister.

Genuine loneliness can be a dangerous thing. Not only for you, but others around you. Being desperate for love can cloud your judgment and cause you to make rash decisions. So yes, Tyrion is flawed, but you can’t completely knock him for it because he’s a victim of his circumstances. Due to the abuse of his father and sister, he grew up with the impression that he will never be loved or be of any value to anyone…which is something that a lot of lonely young men in the real world today can relate to.

Excellent analysis as always! I'd be very interested in your thoughts about Penny and Tyrion's relationship with her as well. Some people think she's supposed to be a love interest for him but somehow I don't think so. I have no idea where that plotline is going or what its purpose in the story is.
@HillsAliveYT
@HillsAliveYT Год назад
I definitely DON'T see her as a love interest for him, it's been a while since I've read her chapters but I feel like Penny is going to be some kind of reckoning for Tyrion as well, I mean her brother was murdered because people thought it was Tyrion which doesn't sound like the foundation of romance to me but does seem like a plot device that could force Tyrion to confront his own choices and how they affect other people.

I think you should do a video compiling the issues you have pointed out over the years with George's work in relation to women. One of the core elements of Game of Thrones is an attempt to be a "realistic" version of LOTR. Because of Tolkien's Catholicism, there are multiple women who are portrayed positively in their femininity. Galadriel immediately springs to mind. However, it seems to me that exceedingly few Women in game of thrones are shown to be good or intelligent IN SO FAR as the are feminine. Of all the female characters presented as intelligent in ASOIAF, Olena Tyrell, Mirri Maz Durr, Jemma Lannister, Barbary Dustin etc, all of them share the commonality that they are not particularly feminine. Arya's arc by and large consists in abandoning her femininity, in the last season of AGOT Sansa is presented in a much more masculine fashion. It strikes me then that even if George believes biological women can be intelligent etc, he doesn't seem to believe that they can be intelligent and feminine. The only real exception to this seems to be Melisandre or Cersei. And maybe the Dornish in general, but in that instance they all seem to be pawns of Doran. However, these characters in general are all either outright villains, or else seen as femme fatales. There are as far as I can tell no women in ASOIAF who are good, intelligent and feminine. It seems to me to be entirely one of the two and not the other.

Me at the beginning of this video- how dare you slander my precious Tyrion 😭 Me now- OMG, Tyrion! WTF, man? 🤬 I guess I was blinded by the fact that his TV portrayal highlights his good qualities and reminds me of my own irl husband- kind and gracious to those he cares about, cunning and manipulative to those he hates. TV show Tyrion is the flip side of book Tyrion. Yes, he's privileged by birth. But within that privilege of birth is the reality of how people treat him despite his birth and because of his obvious lacking as a normal human within his society. Essentially, his obvious privilege and obvious lacking are portrayed equally and oppositely in the books vs the TV show

Ever since Tyrion was born, he was mistreated by his parents but also was given all the advantages of being a Lannister by his parents. I think Tyrion probably had the chance of being different if he simply had good parents as a kid, since despite being grown up to not care about anybody but Lannisters he still feels sympathetic to non-Lannisters (even in his messed-up way, seeing himself as being more than good for doing the most basic morally good thing and not hurting Sansa). But his only parent left was a prideful hypocrite who didn't care about non-Lannisters, so he grew up to not understand just how entitled he was and just how disadvantaged anyone under him is to his will as a Lannister. Meanwhile characters with good parents and people to look up to like Ned Stark tend to become good people. I think Ned's son, Robb Stark, is probably the (morally) best person of Westeros. He's got all of his father's good qualities, but ACTUALLY STANDS UP TO HIS OWN ALLIES/FRIENDS WHEN THEY DO BAD THINGS (ex: Rickard Karstark). Ned didn't do the same when he executed Lady, and didn't seem to really give a shit about what his 12-year old daughter thought, with her innocent pet being murdered. (Not to say he didn't care for all his family, however. He definitely did, but I don't think he realized the mental repercussions this could have on Sansa, just like how he often underestimates his action's consequences). sorry needed to edit a little to make sense
@legrandliseurtri7495
@legrandliseurtri7495 Год назад
To me, it felt like Ned knew how bad it would be for poor Sansa, but he couldn't think of any other solution in that moment.

Love this video. But there’s an even bigger red flag in Tyrion’s book dialog apart from Tysha weeping that the show omitted. “I was only thirteen, and the wine went to my head I fear, and before I knew it I was sharing her bed.” The wine went to his head. How many rapists have used alcohol as an excuse? As show!Shae would say “A girl who is almost raped does not invite another man into her bed two hours later.” No, she wouldn’t. Unless she was just propositioned by the drunk son of Tywin Lannister after being rescued and fed by said son. The noble wants his due. I can’t refuse. Consent is thrown right out the window. My favorite part of your analysis was when you pointed out how Tyrion wants love from women he has an enormous amount of power over and throws massive self-pitying mental tantrums when he doesn’t get it. Though beautiful women he has an enormous amount of power over would be more accurate since he’s a shallow hypocrite and the ultimate nice guy. He’ll never admit how much he loves power and privilege, and he feels he deserves undying loyalty from women in exchange for material luxury and a little basic human decency.

I'm surprised you didn't include Penny in your analysis. His relationship with her seems like it will decide so much of Tyrion's future in the story. There's an opportunity given how low Tyrion has fallen by the end of ADWD/TWOW sample chapters, that Penny is his path to redemption. It would parallel nicely with Brienne helping Jaime find his own humanity. If he can learn to trust a woman that tried to kill him, that would be real growth for Tyrion. On the other hand, he could get Penny killed with all his scheming and continue down the path to outright villainy.

I might do something Penny/Lollys related in the future because I find Tyrion's rejection of them to be interesting, especially in contrast to his nice guy behavior when it comes to Tysha, Shae, and Sansa.

During Shae's murder he sings hands of gold, which derides Tyrion for loving whores and being a poor Hand. Which I think really shows how in that moment he's only perceiving himself as the victim while literally choking her to death

Caveated with the hopes to not get cancelled... Tyrion is pretty clearly a villain that (in the beginning at least) thinks he isn't. GRRM calls him a villain, he makes smart strategic plays, but also is vengeful and does more to stroke his own ego than get results. And has some pretty dark thoughts and actions when it comes to ... "romance" That said...I always read it as Tysha was doing a self interested play. Let's not take away her agency... she was said to be hungry peasant, and she met a rich, sweet, rich, highborn, rich kid who was probably saying how unloved he was... and she recognized that this was probably the best life on paper she could get. I do think Tyrion would have treated her well and did love her, and she probably would've in return. She was 13-14 and probably dreamed of living in casterlyrock (lady Tysha), and there was her chance. There are some ability to consent issues (one being that she was 13), but I don't get the vibe she wasn't into it, singing and such after. Also a fortnight is said to have passed before the unapproved wedding, what power would she be under since he had to do all this with secrets and bribes, maybe he had some guards... but it seems like they wouldn't risk crossing Tywin. So it could be that he used his power to sleep with her and get married, but it seems as likely for me that she saw an opportunity to better her life and took it. And that wouldn't be the only ambiguous relationship in Tyrions life that started as a move to get a better life... and ended in horror and tragedy.

Most of Tyrion's problems come from societal standards or Tywin. Societal problems made Tyrion look a unloving monster while Tywin fueled these notions even more by treating him poorly to put it lightly. Not a good combo

I think Tyrion kind of, when he thinks about it, knows he won’t ever be loved by a woman because of his appearance. He tries to ascribe himself other characteristics he thinks are lovable, admirable, and manly but he has no hope. He can have a fantasy but it is always with an intimacy worker who is being “paid” in some way. And more importantly, when Tyrion shoots Tywin it is not because he is defending Tasha’s honor…. but rather because he can’t hear the truth. Think about why he killed his father. Maybe Tywin gave Tysha silvers but it was Tyrion’s chickens that makes her a whore to begin with when you think about it.

great video/ id say there's book tyrion and show tyrion. your breakdown of psychology is perfect for BOOK tyrion. having read books 3-5, i knew the show was up to something emitting the books version of "the brothel incident" when in the show he just tells a lady (after talking, and in the same tongue mind you lol) "he cant do it" even when consensual. and the books was..... WAAAAAY different i knew they were two different characters now. but then to hear the BOOKS version of the Tysha situation. its like.... daaaamn. that would be a blatant s a based of being blackout drunk alone. then tears, ect... no good. i think show tyrion has love for women. disappointments and betrayals yes... but seeing women as tools?? not show tyrion. BOOK tyrion.. its either tools or chess pieces.

I think the worst part that i and alot of people forget is that after Tywin's guards gang **** Tysha, Tyrion ****s her immediately afterwards as a sort of sick revenge. And the fanbase just like to put that aside. What was done to Tysha is probably one of the most sickening thing ever put to page and Tyrion watched and participated in it definity brings down the likability of the character.

You aren't giving Tyrion enough credit for choosing not to have sex with Sansa. It's not just a case of "he had her at his mercy and didn't rape her, whoop-de-doo". Tywin was breathing down his neck to consummate the marriage and get her pregnant ASAP, since unconsummated marriages can be annulled and a grandchild officially ties the families together by blood. Tyrion was risking losing his family a major asset (a Lannister as Lord Protector of the North and a Lannister as eventual Lord of Winterfell).
