In this video, I show the rough plumbing and installation of the U by Moen smart shower system using Pex and Shark Bite fittings.
Over the Winter of 2018, I gutted my tiny master bathroom, moved a wall to double the useable space, and completely rebuilt it from the ground up with high-end finishes like carrara marble and a smart shower.

I'm using the pex pipe with pex pipe fittings, which made this install go well. I used your alternative balancing loop. I used the blue pex pipe for cold and red for hot. I also got shut off valves in the same fashion. I used the white for water coming out of the unit.

Which kind of clamps did you use, metal crimped or the stretched plastic ones? Either one is an investment for the tools.

I plan to do a review of the U by Moen this winter after I finish the projects I have in flight. But I won't keep you in suspense... it's the best feature of our new bathroom and we love it. Has been working perfectly for 9 months. We feel it was definitely worth the money and do not regret the purchase.

Great system.... however never use shark bite fittings for a permanent install..... they are for temporary use only.... the pex is fine but should have used proper pex copper crimp rings

Moen calls for a minimum opening of 14 x 29" so that you also have access to the GFCI outlet/Moen power supply, and that power supply is to be installed above the U of Moen valve. I'm guessing that Moen's instruction is not a strict if-you-don't-do-it-you-won't-pass-code rule but it would be helpful to others who stumble across this video to know where you placed your GFCI outlet given that you've gone off the Moen reservation in that regard and it passed your Code inspection.

I read the instructions but chose to do it differently. So it would fit behind the mirror, I installed an outlet for the power supply inside the vanity. You could have easily made it the way inspector recommended by using very small pieces of copper and make.your own tees with a copper tee and copper female adapters and continue with pexx

Not to my knowledge. But it’s extra long in case you need to put the unit in the attic or basement.

Very nice, just wondering up here in CT shark bites are not allowed to be buried inside walls it’s a code thing up here. Is that different in other states?

I believe PEX pipe is illegal in some states too. Just like California and New York require "specific" Catalytic Converters on cars compared to all other states... Laws are crazy in some states lol

Don't install the batteries until the power goes out, might be years and the batteries could leak and then you have junk

If I wasn’t willing to put them in the wall, why would I use them anywhere in my house? If they weren’t safe, I would have failed inspection. Or minimally, the inspector would have suggested I replace them. But he didn’t say anything about them, he only advised me on the pressure loop.

@@JamesAutoDude you'd be more happy with a system that relies on o-rings and a pressure fit connection than a system that relies on a soldered bond between materials that has been in use for a century? i can understand arguments for shark bite when you are talking about diy, speed, .etc. but not reliability.

13 years of remodeling bathrooms has taught me to only use shark bites when absolutely necessary. You could have bought a pair of crimpers and a torch for the price of all those fittings alone.

I used to use sharkbites now I use pexcrimp rings (just need a $15 Crimp pliers) 100% more reliable.

As a plumber please don't take this as the way to do it. A loop is always better than what was done here and from what I can see a loop could have been achieved. Please please please don't ever put shark bites behind a wall. If you use a shark bite use it in a place that is accessible to deal with when or if they fail. I as a plumber would never use a shark bite as a permanent use fitting. I have seen them fail alot. U by moen is a badass system though I have installed alot of them and love it when installed correctly. Love moen. Don't use shark bites and please try to get a balanced loop or you may be disappointed in the final product and have no way to fix it after the wall is finished.i suggest hiring a plumber for proper installation. Just saying. Cheers

could you build a regular hand knob in loop with it. so if there was ever a electrical short on the display you could still turn a hand knob to take a shower. plus that would make another good video of a bypass hand knob.

Sure you could do that, but I would just use our other shower if the master bath shower breaks. If you only have ONE shower in the house, I can understand your desire for having a backup.
