Why are you showing self propelled artillery tanks while talking about the M1A2's upgrades? One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. The ammunition is completely different. The SPA's aren't even tanks. They are artillery. I appreciate the information but it would be better to just show the new tank upgrades.

If you contaminate the surface of the tank and especially the lenses/Sensors the tank is blind. This applies for all new modern tanks.

a test has been done a couple of weeks ago in Romania where the sights and targeting systems have been attacked with a very simple method. It was a test to see if a tank can be set out with very simple methods . Four condoms were filled with dark leaded paint and thrown on the sight systems of the tank. The panzer crew could not do anything anymore. All sensors failed and the tankers were blind.

That trade off came a year or two later. It was an awesome scene when a soldier did a neutral steer and the rear of the M-1 perched with its grill pointed at a General Dynamics car and we watched that blue paint turn a hot brownish glow. We were so impressed.

Why is there a gap between the body and the turret , wouldn't that allow an incoming shell or missile to get between both and explode rather than bouncing of with sloping armor .

The very first M-1 to roll off CHRYSLER CORPORATION assembly line was painted flat black with triple 6's on each front angular locations on the trurret. Intresting to note.

Notice the exposed rear drive sprocket. In its infancy, the drive sprocket was covered by armor plate. This caused mud build up and interference and undue wear.

I think the US has made some dramatic FLIR technical breakthroughs. I hear of them on aircraft, missile launchers, and now tanks. That is a significant area of advancement. Nothing concrete , but I watch a lot of vids and they are all saying the FLIR is one of the areas of serious upgrades they keep mentioning across the spectrum of military equipment. GO USA!!!

this news is literally ancient. The Abrams block upgrade programs will not stop for up to another 50 years the Abrams platform is just that good. The Jackson series MBT is what I am always on the look out for information on. It the Jackson series MBT that is supposed to replace the Abrams as MBT numbers wise. The coming Jackson MBT is going to be much lighter, faster, survivable, reliable etc. so it can operate in urban environments much more easily. That is all I know about it.

For those talking about export abrams. Why would we give top secret armor to foreign countries? We aren't giving them are best armor so incase of capture, it won't be used against us

Its a good improvement, but the danger of Armata tank is its electronic sensors that detect incoming rounds, and its 2 ways to stop incoming fire, it has APS on turret that shoots down low speed artillery fire and some kind of grenade launchers under the turret, that are able to launch small bombs that detonate near the tank making a wall of shrapnels which can destroy incoming tank rounds or cause premature detonation anyway. If they were equipped with reactive armor, too, things would get even worse. The problem now is not to hit the enemy or to create new ammo, but to surpass their defense systems with new techniques. Sure when a t-14 runs out of that special ammo it's worthless, since it's a light tank, but they have many, probably enough to stop all enemy fire enough time to destroy all the tanks attacking them. Light tanks can be easily destroyed with highly explosive mines, though..... Or those sensors could be jammed with some kind of electronic pulse

What about the M1A1 that got stuck in a mud pit on a march to engage the Iraqi's, the commander made the decision after trying to pull it out of the mud to leave it to the engineers who were behind them. But before the engineers arrived 5 T-72's found it and took it under fire at point blank range. The M1A fired back killing 2 T-72's in less than 10 seconds so the T-72's ducked behind a sand dune out of sight but the M1A was able to see the T-72's with their night vision and shot and killed a T-72 through the sand dune, the other T72's took off to avoid being killed. Shortly after dispatching the 3rd T-72 the engineers showed up and pulled it out of the mud and it rejoined its company to continue the attack. I'm retired but if I was young and ordered into combat again I'd want to be in a M1A2 upgraded tank.

This is a great tank nearing the end of its useful life. It will be a considerable time before enough more modern designs are deployed to effect the strategic balance. The Armata will be slow in coming and will not be widely available to client states for years. In any case, China is a much more likely threat and the VT4 is a modernized T-72.
