Country that hasn’t been at war in 42 years gets criticized by country that’s been at war for the last 20. Country that’s invaded like 6 countries in the last 42 years says they are a big contributor to world peace
That's actually true, the United States is instrumental in maintaining peace and globalization. However, it's also true that they're a huge contribution to destabilization in poor countries.
Since World War II, the United States has been directly or indirectly involved in 90 percent of the world's conflicts. The only thing the US has to do with peace is "peaceful evolution".

Last thing first. I think China's military is more defensive as opposed to US's offensive. US has bases all over the world, and china's foreign bases could be counted on one hand. That explains why China wanted a front line defense at the South China Seas. It wants to stop US to get close enough to take pot shots at China's military installations. Taiwan is always a very contentious issues between China and US. US is using Taiwan as a convenient pawn to play China. By promising Taiwan protection, China is second guessing if US really is prepared to engage China for an island populated not by the same kind of people like those in the west, ie. UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. Taiwanese are Asians. Yes, it sounded racist. But I recall when the Japanese overran Singapore, the rescue ships sent by Britain to evacuate the trapped people were only for white people. Even mixed races with white heritage weren't allowed on board. Promises are made, but also meant to be broken in times of crises. So would US risk a potential all-out confrontation for an Asian country? I doubt it. Besides scoring a PR win, US also made money by selling arms in $billions to Taiwan. So it is a clever one stone two birds tactic. I reckon Taiwan ought not to buy into US's promises of protection because it may backfire. Hong Kong is a classic case of shooting in one's own foot. The protestors/rioters thought they could keep pushing China, believing that China will back off for the fear of losing the favourable trading status. But China realized that if the trend continued, ie. more violent and more anti-China actions, Hong Kong won't be worth taking back as it is way beyond governable. In the end, the rioters didn't get what they wanted, and the businesses didn't pull out as they value money over moralistic gestures. The falungong is a very interesting one. It is now known that it is an anto-China, money making machine, and Scientology all rolled into one pseudo religion. The Australia ABC actually had an 1-hour run about it in the 4-Corners. I am not the lease surprised that the CIA does have a hand in this. The CIA got involved in the Tibetan uprising. It is the same with Al Qaeda when the CIA was heavily investing in Osama Bin Laden to counter the Soviets. Enemies could become friends, and friends could switch side and become enemies. As for China's status as the super power, I think that term is moot. Super power is in the minds of people. Just like fears. The more you feared, the more you begin to believe it is true. US has built itself as the moral beacon of the world as well as the defender of the lot. However, maintaining those hugely expensive bases all over the world is not cheap. Hence Trump whinged to NATO about not sharing the burden. But Europe plays US quite well. If US wants to keep the #1 head honcho title, and be the world police and acting out its Rambo fantasies, it must pay, and pay heavily. Europeans nodded their heads in agreement with US when demanded to share the burden more, but deep down, they thought otherwise. Right now is a clear demonstration of the pros and cons of the two dominant political systems namely democracy vs autocratic. Such as story still has a long way to run. Judging by what is happening in US, the deep divisions amplified by Trump's short 4 years, and the failures to deal with a war-like crisis such as the Covid-19, I think China has demonstrated that a structured, top-down system is much more coherent and easier to manage. The QAnon, the various conspiracies and splintered groups of all kinds of wonky and spooky theories clearly do not help to gel people together. If anyone has some knowledge of Chinese history, they would learn that China is not about military dominance. The Silk Road was a trade initiative that made China rich, and also made China too comfortable within itself as it became lazy and soft. Much water passed under the bridge since the Silk Road. The new "Belt and Road" is a more ambitious initiative than the ancient Silk Road. Thanks to modern technologies and transportation, the new initiative is more global, with Africa and the Pacific regions included. China wasn't looking for military dominance in the ancient one, this current one might not be because US and allies won't allow China to do it without challenges. The banning of various Chinese technologies in the US as well as on US allies is a clear sign of resistance as well as nervousness of the west. Most interesting topic. I could write about it all day !
Great post. However, it's far too balanced and nuanced to be appreciated by a typical American, regardless of their education level. We are sadly at a point in history where America is quite convinced China is a villain and a threat that must be dealt with. I just hope China realizes that America will have no qualms in resorting to armed conflict if given the right excuse (potentially one they manufacture on their own), and will be ready for it when and if that day comes. The Ukraine situation certainly could affect things but I expect the US to direct its wounded ego to enact even greater hostility toward China in the aftermath of Putin's aggression.

Your notion of “allies” is superficial. Most countries will stand with countries whom their economy depends. Good attempt by Professor Beckley to provide a 101 on the main issues affecting Sino-US relations. Is a conflict (“war”) between China and US inevitable? First, there are no territorial disputes between China and US. Second, while there are trade frictions between China and US, no country has gone to war with its major/largest trade partner since WWII. Third, US needs China on issues like North Korea/South Korea, Pakistan, Iran and Russia while China needs the US on issues like Taiwan, Japan, India and Russia. This premise is as constant as the individual national interest of both countries. Fourth, China does not seek to export its ideology abroad (unlike USSR) while US does not actively pursue regime change in Beijing. Fifth, China acknowledges US’s military and technological superiority and will not proactively start a war with the US. The US knows it can win a conventional war against China but at a terrible political, humanitarian and economic costs that it is unwilling and unable to stomach. The US and China are not monolithic; there are elements within each country that are agitating for both conflict and cooperation. To those students of international relations (IR), what is the purpose of understanding IR if not to reduce the probability of war, regardless of your school of thoughts (neorealist, neoliberals etc)? One should remember that when US and China normalised and establish diplomatic relations in 1972, Nixon and Mao stressed to each other that neither countries seek to be hegemons in the Asia Pacific. This laid the foundations for peace and cooperation between China and US till the present day. Cooperation between US and China will also help to reduce/solve the security dilemmas of other Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, India, Vietnam and promote regional peace. Few countries in Asia-Pacific region want to choose between US and China. I’m just a layman with no ties to the foreign policy industry of any country. I examine primary sources as far as possible to understand international relations.
