Im a Norwegian and I usually go bath with the polar bears we have walking around in our streets. I bath in water that is 1 degree, almost frozen. and I raid england once a year, just a family tradition

in finnish army we had to swim through frozen lake, before that we had marched 2days with no sleep. it was pretty rewarding experience, cus our captain was on the other side of lake and handed us our training barch marks personally.

This is just a good old Norwegian baptism. On a more serious note, this is actually a very important exercise in the Norwegian Army, I've been through this myself a few times while I was in the army, although the instructors was much more demanding with us, we had to ''ask for permission'' to leave the water, and it's easier said than done to remember the 100% CORRECT sentence while in the freezing cold, and you start slurring your speech, I don't know how long I stayed down the first time but it felt like atleast a minute. Anyway, it is an important exercise because it trains soldiers in a situation that is very possible to happen in Norway, if a tank or any other vehicle, or even by foot-- if it goes through the ice in a lake, the soldiers needs to be prepared for the experience and what it actually feels like, because if you have never been exposed to such temperatures it might cause severe disorientation, especially in a situation where you might be driving a vehicle and it goes through the ice.

Now imagine what it felt like for all those people on the Titanic, some of which stayed alive for over 30 MINUTES before passing away due to hypothermia...

As a Marine myself I can tell you, Marines dont like to be in water, only on water.

From Finland here, did this every winter morning before breakfast for years, when we lived next to a lake. Usually spent 1-2 minutes in there swimming. Funny to look at these guys, they are tough but not used to cold it seems.

You didn’t even see what happened before this. First you go to a 80 degree sauna, then get smacked with spruce branches, and THEN you get to go for a nice cooling swim...

Wim Hof would splash around in there all day laughing.

Respect for them USA boys, laugh all you want but they're out there doing it, not used to arctic training but still giving it all.

It makes a HUGE difference if you get your head below the water or not. I've done both. If you get your head below, it feels like the cold zaps your brain imo.
