Retired Marine here. Loved it when I was on active duty and the Commandant at the time decried that at occasions when the Marines Hymn was to be played, it was preceded by Anchor's Aweigh as a nod to our sea service heritage. Always played as one movement with a nice segue between the two.
Memorial Day, 1964, I had just joined the Navy (Reserves),wearing my uniform for the very first time, all lined up for the hometown parade, when the 100+ member Muskegon Mona Shores HS band, whose team name is the Sailors, and fight song, Anchors Aweigh, struck up their fight song. Can't describe the thrill I felt. I still try to attend the hometown Memorial Day parade and fill again with pride whenever I hear the 'Sailors' play MY fight song.
One of the best renditions of Anchors Aweigh I've ever seen. The band is well practiced and has wonderful flourishes throughout, and the leader gives a salute at the end to past band members who are in the audience. GO NAVY!
My great respect to your uncle. My grandfather served in the Pacific in WWII in the US Navy. Those men were made as much of steel as their ships were. 😊
have fun i was in the navy for almost 2 years till my mom got sick with cancer it was the best time of my life all i can say is welcome aboard ship mate and thank you for serving the greatest country in the world
Greetigs from Finland... There are three military marches that I love... Being a bit bias two of them are Finnish but this is the third... Played a b-tuba as a youngster and this song was one of many I liked... Never with this kind of quality thou :-D
My Dad was Navy Master Chief petty officer CL frogman special forces ship welder in Antioch CA Navy 💈 Barber and based out of San Diego Korean conflict and end of WW2 Veteran
I remember in bootcamp in Diego everytime the marching passed in front of the commanding officers building they would break out in Anchors Aweigh. Always knew where the band was..
I KNOW, Mastacheifa. I thought the same thing. Looks like the same size as the Great Lakes SSC band I played & marched with. I hope we sounded as good (I think we did). We weren't MU's, but ET's, FT's, EM's, MM's, GM's all attending tech school and playing in the band as an extracurricular activity.
@NForcerSA Look, shipmate, I retired in '93, the blackest day in my life. Not a day goes by that don't wish I was still in Dress Canvas. I'm a Navy Snipe. I wear that badge with honor. Remember, friend, If anyone asks you if you had done something memorable, you look them in the eye and say: "I served in the US Navy"!!!! =Stefan=
Not bad, but when I was the piccolo player for Commander inChief, Atlantic Fleet Band (what later became the Fleet Forces Band) we played this without music. We never carried music or lyres, and had everything memorized that we played while standing in formation or on the march.
