The U.S. Navy challenged me to build a mobile shelter as part of their series #SailorVS. I don’t usually do challenges, but this sponsorship was really fun and I learned a lot about want it means to be a Seabee, the Navy’s elite building task force. Be sure to check out the whole series where I go head-to-head against a team of Seabees to see who can execute a better build in a time crunch. Vote for who you think won!

idea for improvement: Just inside on the floor at both the front and back door, make a 3"-4" high lip out of the waterproof tape that folds when down to seal the floor from water running into the shelter. It would involve some creases to fold it right but when the shelter is up, the 2 sides pulling it apart would keep it a few inches high so water wouldn't just run through on the floor.

I served six years in the Navy (1978-1984) as Steel Worker. I served at seven different bases on six different continents in two different divisions, and for the most part it was great. The time served helped me to grow as a person and learn a lot about the world that I didn't know and understand. Each day brought different challenges and lessons to be learned. It taught me to work well with others and to see that our differences weren't so different after all. That lesson you learned as a child "Treat others as you would want to be treated" helped me in countless ways along the way.

@richardmillhousenixon
@richardmillhousenixon 3 года назад
@Sans Handlebars but that requires existing structural materials in the location you set it up in (trees, sticks, etc). The point of this was it's all one self-contained unit. It's just a prototype as well, so in the future it could be made with proper materials, maybe using thin aluminum/carbon fiber tent pole style supports instead of the big plastic sheet in the middle, as well as proper waterproofed Kevlar or Nylon fabric hinges
@Chaoddity
@Chaoddity 3 года назад
Its inferior to a tent in every conceivable way. No anchor, awkward dimensions, would catch the wind (bad when resting, worse when carrying). Tape is not all that durable. Door is drafty. The only real improvement it brings is the fact that it IS corrugated so theoretically better insulated if (and ONLY if) the ends are sealed right
@richardmillhousenixon
@richardmillhousenixon 3 года назад
@@Chaoddity Again, it was supposed to be a concept, not a final production model. Create a small single-person tent with assembled dimensions similar to the box and you have a perfect shelter that would probably take up about as much space as a 32oz water bottle, if not less.

Up here in Canada we use these things called tents. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours and most will break down into an easily managed bundle. They can be ground mounted or strung between tree trunks to elevate them and are available from cheap to Rolex in price. Great project, I like the idea of showing that the navy does more than just sail around on battleships and submarines, love the thought that went into this my only criticism would be breathing holes because with how it's built out of plastic and the idea of trying to make the entrances sealed can maybe make it hard to get a good airflow so it may get hot and stuffy in there as well but that being said it's a great prototype to a fantastic cause

@I Like To Make Stuff no need to re-invent the wheel really. If you go back to the Mythbusters episode on tornadoes where they made a one man shelter that could withstand the wind off a 737 motor and take a pretty hard strike. I would like to see how you would expand on their concept and use something like tyvek to add water resistance.

One thing i would change is, I would flip it upside down, the water proofing would work better if it is like a trap door, you can let the door fall down.

I'd wrap some insulation blankets on the inside for winter shelters

I've actually watched some videos from a guy who made homeless shelters out of coroplast and another where they made a bicycle pulled camper, the stuff can stay pretty warm if the seams are properly taken care of. Most of the materials came from old election signs.

I was actually thinking the other way. There needs to be better airflow or you are going to be super hot in a plastic box.

it probably was, they didn't seem to actually be having a conversation, i think they just read their lines with someone reading the other's lines as a placeholder then edited the videos together

His chain of command was probably watching him looking for thing to critique, can't let us sailors get out in public without supervision.

I think you did a great-job Bob. This was not something where you had weeks or month to sit down and mull-over, or test out different-prototypes and configurations until you got the absolute perfect-idea. This was something that came out of the blue (no pun-intended) and you had to come up with something relatively-quickly. I think you did a *GREAT* job. There are a LOT of uses that can come out of this design. Stay encouraged, and keep up the *GREAT* work!

With plastic I get it its lightweight and waterproof. But SW2 Priester's scenario was welding. So hmmm welding ???? Splatters are hot it'll melt right through that plastic.

Bob, long time fan. Good construction but unwieldy.. Because of lateral length. You set a great example and mits... keep on building. Cheers.
