Daniel Lanois served as producer on the singles; Pride and Unforgettable Fire. Eno was the lead on the rest of the album. It marks the first and last time U2 would surrender themselves to a producer with no pushback. This track is the best representation of why. He played an abandoned version of A Sort of Homecoming slowed down and backwards. Had Bono listen once and sent him in to improv vocals. When they listened back Bono said he couldn’t wait to finish it and Eno informed him it was already finished. When they got back together for The Joshua Tree Daniel Lanois had just scored a massive hit producing Peter Gabriel’s album So. I think his hit making ability perfectly balanced Eno’s experimental approach.

The backing track for this song is A Sort of Homecoming played backwards. Pretty cool, man. The only other time I can remember a band doing that was Stone Roses using Waterfall backwards for Don't Stop.

This song doesn’t do much for me either. If I’m listening to the album I wouldn’t skip it but would never choose to listen to it on its own. Side 1 is much better. With the exception of Bad. Still my favorite on the album.

This is the track for Sort of Homecoming slowed down and reversed, with Bono just scatting and improvising over it. He was going to go back and write an actual lyric and melody to it but they thought it had some kind of charm to it and left it. Not sure it works, just sounds like what it is....an unfinished idea that was just slapped on here. The last song is nothing special either haha. Overall a great album but there are like 3-4 throwaway pieces that probably could have been developed more into actual songs.

Not much fire and certainly not unforgettable. I really like the overall sonic vibe of the album but I owned it and it baffles me that I don't remember this song at all. Doesn't even ring a bell. Strange.

This album is about atmosphere and feel and not about any one track. I wouldn't put it on to hear just one song. I like the mood it sets and Elvis is just part of that.

This song sounds like could have been early Radiohead song although they would have done better job with it.

Not a strong song at all. There are a few like this on the album. It's still an album that I can play front to back and feel good about it though.

They picked a boring song to be the longest 😮
@a.k.1740
@a.k.1740 2 дня назад
For me, this long, boring track sums up the whole of this album, which is built on the same mould. I like ambient stuff, even if it's metronomic and repetitive, but here it's flat and there's no real atmosphere or logic to establish a mood, it just drags on for nothing. A four-track EP would have been more than enough, and for that the first four tracks were perfect (at most with the good non-album B-side "Love Comes Tumbling" as an extra fifth track, but that's it). I mean, it's not even arty or sophisticated, it's boring. A band like Simple Minds, before they became a stadium new wave rock band, did inspired hypnotic new wave art rock. It could be ultra-repetitive but it was still brilliant with a clear direction. Their albums Empires and Dance and the double Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call (the latter produced by Steve Hillage) are a model of the genre, which The Unforgettable Fire is not.

Yeah... whatever. Plus I also remember at the time thinking "What's with all these song titles that are trying to evoke Americana -- 4th of July, Elvis Presley, MLK, etc, -- but the music doesn't have any kind of overtly American sound or feel?" (that would come on 'Rattle and Hum').
@mightyV444
@mightyV444 2 дня назад
Yeah, that totally also was me! Loads of America references while their actual music had zero to do with American styles. But I did love their music that way! And it was when they suddenly turned into a faux Soul & Blues band also musically when I very quickly lost interest in U2, despite having been a massive fan for 5 years by that point.

@@yes_head - Also, I'd found out only recently that the two live recordings on their EP 'Wide Awake In America' had actually been recorded in the UK! 😅

When I first listened to this album decades ago I thought this B-side would be mostly skip tracks (except for the amazing Bad, which was & remains one of my all time favs-the live version especially). But I was so wrong about its initially perceived “weaknesses.” The charm & magic of this album is HOW IT CHANGES for the listener over time-revealing new sensations, tones, imagery, and meanings. It “aged” with me, enabling me not to grow tired of it even as I matured, musically & in life. It’s been everything BUT boring to me. I’ve heard similar perceptions from many other U2 fans. I think this happens precisely because of the “slightly out of focus” nature of its musical ideas-which are there; it remains grounded rhythmically and harmonically, yet is *so damn ephemeral.* I guess I prefer that to music that is definitively “x” & so cut out and shaped to be “x” that it figuratively leaves sharp edges and can become boring when you are done with “x.”

Well, you were onto something with saying "sort of"! 😄 I do hear drums and bass from the opening track in a slower version and lower pitch myself, but not that they'd be playing backwards, like some others here said they would be. I also have a feeling they actually had been sped _up_ in 'A Sort Of Homecoming', just by the way the drums sound. The true tempo most likely is somewhere in-between the two. Now that I know Bono had completely improvised his part here, I must commend him on that ability! Even though it still makes a boring song only _slightly_ better for me.

You're spot on. The entire second side is practically a waste. Pride and The Unforgettable Fire are the only ones I revisit with A Sort of Homecoming thrown in every once in a great while.

It's monotone, it's not U2, it's one of their worst. Ok you can argue, if you criticise then do better, but it's not about that. We are judging the greatness that is U2 the majority of the time., and they have set a huge level

Info to JP: Like October, I always found the short MartinLutherKing brilliantly integrated into the concerts. The fact that Promenade and MLK were placed as side closer, shows another weakness of TUF, unfortunately. In general it was a problem with all U2, the song order. Market strategy reasons??? The order on the praised All You Can't Leave Behind is really bad. O.k. it's just a pop album, except for the brilliant blues-rock Kite with the great lyrics.

Gotta disagree. I love how this album closes out with something unusual: a mostly acapella requiem inspired by MLK [but could be extrapolated to almost anyone]-with just a hint of “stadium” sounds in the track. It’s very fitting for TUF. Intimate…yet aware of a greater social fabric/social consciousness. Scaled down…yet subtly alluding to a bigger experience.

Man you don't give up easy lol. 70's is my era when it comes to music but he's not gonna do an album just because you keep asking. Just speaking from my own experience and being part of this channel since before the Rush discography. Fortunately he did and is now doing my two favorite bands. Actually Rush up to about 85' would have been enough and 70's Yes is as good as it gets. I may send him something to entice him to do Journey Infinity. Journeys sweetspot in my opinion. For the record I would rather hear Boston over U2 even though it was too radio friendly for my taste back then. It does hold up still today. Cheers

@@kennethmckinney2532 I like his analysis. I hope he does. Actually, based on what I've seen of Justin, I can't believe he doesn't already know Boston. I'm 62, born in 62, ... in the words of Dani Rojas (Ted Lasso), classic rock is life!

@philcasselli6534 I was born in 1960 so it's right in my wheelhouse honestly. It's a bit surprising what he hasn't heard and doesn't know but in many ways its not as he says. There is so much out there you can never hear it all. Many times it just comes down to what his dad was into which is the same with my kids. They know plenty of classic rock believe me...
