what amazing energy and effort he is putting into a song he has sang to us for almost 30 years. He doesn't do this for MORE MONEY. He admits he craves the connection -he feels he is doing a crap job if someone in the first row seems to be chatting on the phone (even thoough she wasn't)
I agree with Bono about being in the moment, but this was more than 10 years ago. Today, every front row of every concert is full of people trying to capture it on their phones rather than being in the moment. Bono lost that battle. A lot of people did.
In the same Vertigo Tour he was asking for cell phones before one, so was not as it happened in a time before the cell phones, he was in his period of celebrity🤪
If you're gonna pay to watch these amazing men perform songs that they've poured their heart, time, and energy into, give them some respect and enjoy what they're doing for you. So while you whine about how Bono yelled at you in front of a whole concert, think about how you were probably the only person doing that.
Yes, we pay to watch them, so they should respect us for being there. We should be allowed to have a good time as well. Why can’t we just respect them and use our phones at the same time? There’s no law to say we can’t use our phones there.
Bono can be a bit much, but I think he's completely right on here. Nobody lives in the moment anymore -- with the encroachment of technology, fewer and fewer people are unable to have unmediated experiences.
He's actually right. If you spend your time recording the concert through your phone, you're looking through your phones screen and your memory is not of the show, your memory is of recording the show. I saw them in 2015 and recorded maybe 4 songs, took maybe 4/5 pics and looking back even that was probably too much. You have to be in the moment at a concert otherwise your not really there and you lose an opportunity to have a great memory of it.
I saw their 360 show, and I took no pics, recorded no songs. I remember it like it was yesterday, from the opening song (City of Blinding Lights) to the last song (With Or Without You), and it completely transcended me. It wasn't just a rock concert, it was an experience, one that I won't ever forget.
It's like Christian Bateman, err, Bale, going ballistic against a sound engineer in recording the last Terminator movie. At some point these egos become the size of an aircraft carrier.
I've seen them live and it was amazing. I'm a big U2 fan but when Bono goes off on some quasi-poetic rant, I just imagine the other guys in the band being like, "Oh, here he goes again!"
Bono overreacted a bit here. There was no need to swear at the Person, he could of simply said “Put your Phone away please” He was probably just having an off day as we all do. I can understand why this Person is upset about this. Think about it, When someone you have looked up to your whole life speaks to you like this in front of thousands of People, it is humiliating! I really hope this Person got an apology of him, because this must of been an awful experience for them. I love Bono, but i think he was a bit nasty here. My favorite one ever of Bono going off on a fan is when they would play People Get Ready (I believe it was during the Joshua Tree tour) during performances. I found an audio copy way back when Napster huge. Bono stops in the middle of the song after asking who wants to play his guitar to tell some guy, "Listen guy, one more piece of shit out of you and you're out of here. I don't care if you paid for the front row." There was a bit more to the conversation but I can't remember the rest.
I remember seeing him singing "All I want is you" live on stage and some guy threw a plastic cup of water at him, possibly with ice, and he ducked and points at him and says "All I want is you Pal!" 😁 I can't see the incident on YT it might have been part of a DVD show or something.
Bono made a brief comment about someone talking (or at least he thought was talking) on their cell phone. All he said is put it down you're at a concert. I don't see what everyone's making a big deal about. I mean wouldn't you say something to someone if you were performing at a concert and right in front of you, in the front row, someone is talking on their phone instead of watching your band perform?
yeah, In my opinion you are right; on the one hand I think it´s a bad trend to film instead of enjoying the concert; but on the other hand as a star you have to deal with the individual "needs" of the fans of the first row. To have a smartphone and to film nearly anything is the trend now and you can´t condemn the people for being with the megatrend.
But he didn't just say put it down did he? He just told them to get the fuck off it. There's better ways he could of dealt with it, instead of swearing at them.
Imagine being onstage like that and seeing a wall of cellphones and you're trying to connect with people. He's right, the last few concerts I was at were ruined by selfish idiots with cell phones
To be honest Bono is right. Live the moment through your eyes not your phones, iPods, or tablets for crying outloud. Only do that if you are down at the bottom near them, but otherwise don't do what this person did. It's much too far away and you get blurry pics anyways. :)

I played in a band till I was 40 (I'm in my 50's). The band is like wallpaper for a bunch of drunken young adults staring at their phones and talking about how drunk they were last night. Be in the moment. That band on stage lives all day for that hour or two that they get to play for you. Show some respect.
We still pay to see them, so we deserve respect as well. Do you know how expensive it is? We’re entitled to have a good time as well as them. So if we want to use our phones then we will!

I am in total agreement with Bono on this one! Phones have totally ruined the concert experience not only for the performers but for many of the audience members as well. I think all artists should ban them when performing.
10 years later crowds at concerts are all with cellphones in their hand but Bono likes making money so he tours anyways. He still had to have his hair transplant here.
Millennials and the next generations will live their lives more and more through a phone or some other device, and will become more and more disconnected from reality, feeling more and more safe tucked away behind their safety blanket and yet missing out on more and more of life and as Bono says 'The moment'. It's a worry, who knows what effect this will have?

This captures an interesting moment in history. This is from 2005 when camera phones were starting to become mainstream. It must have been a strange adjustment for musicians to suddenly start seeing everyone with their phones out recording.

maybe the guy wasnt feeling the concert and was dragged there by friends and just needed to make a call or maybe he was so excited he wanted to share his feelings with someone he loved some where else. I think if Bono is really into the moment he wouldn't care too much about what someone is doing in the audience. I call my mom all the time, not when im at a show because im not into that. And when he says coexist isnt calling your mom a great way to coexist with her and share a moment you feel is special?
Most rock stars are tolerant most of time when it comes to audience anomalies. I’ve seen quite passive rock stars loose their cool over something someone in the audience has done. Lecturing the person in the audience was a mistake and if bono has got the voice to lecture then he should have the voice to say sorry for that remark. I don’t think it was a personal attack it’s something I would never do in my band as a ‘frontman’.
I appreciate Bono was caught up in the moment but what he did and said was outrageous. I'd be super-pissed at him. I'd have thrown the phone at him. I'm a life-long U2 fan and I'd have been pissed. I probably wouldn't have had my camera out either, well I might have had it out a bit.

I agree with him! I hate going to ANY live event and seeing someone standing holding their phone. It's ignorant in my opinion. Take for example last night I was at a football match (or soccer if your American) and the boy in front of me was on his phone for 90% of the match. I didn't want to hear what he'd been doing the night before, I wanted to watch the game and enjoy the occasion!
