Edge broke two strings recording the solo for the studio version, he poured all his emotion over his divorce into those notes. This version sounds like him looking back at past experiences instead, wiser and more collected. I love it.
Edge has always an amazing voice. It's similar enough to Bono's to compliment it, yet has it's own unique quality. I've always said I'd pay good money to see Edge and Larry Mullen do a stripped down set of U2 songs. Just an acoustic guitar, some bongos and Edge's voice.
This performance makes me mourn the lack of solo work from him. Such a brilliant musician, he brings something different to the table when he is the focus
His acoustic guitar playing in this video is amazing. Simple riff and a solo, but so incredibly emotional and effective. Truly one of the greatest guitarists of all times.
Night Lover But he’s one of the most influential guitarists ever. By far. As simple and easy as his playing is. The most influential in the last 40 years. Ask people like Tim Pierce, who’s recorded on literally thousand of sessions for most of the “royalty of pop” out there, from Michael Jackson or Crowded house to Adele. The cultural impact of The Edge’s approach to guitar is immense, and one of the few departs from blues based guitar playing. As much is I love Jimi, Jimmy, Beck, SRV and respect Zappa, Van Halen, Eric Johnson... I admire the musical language that the Edge developed with the constraint of not approaching playing guitar like it had been up to 1980.
A beautiful performance. The Edge has a great talent, he's one of a kind. His voice and Bono's are pretty much alike. Thanks God there are artists like him and bands like U2.
One of my fave U2/songs of all time. Love love love. I didnt know it was Edge that sang this all this time! wow. he sounds exactly like Bono on this song!
+coffeescup Yes, this version is more haunting, more raw. The emotions come alive, although the album version does offer something too. The haunting of the voice here is to be found in the sound of the song...
True in a sense that they are the band with the most longevity able to keep great quality in their work. I'd say they are the best band on the long time. The Stones were done after 20 years.
What an amazing guitarist and what an an amazing song writer and singer (yes, he co-wrote this song since this song is about his 1990 divorce). So much emotions with a simple acoustic guitar.
Roger Mahajan The song was wrote by Bono in 1988 and was going to feature on Rattle and Hum but the shelved it. It was the pulled back out by Bono in 1990 while The Edge was having problems with his wife and that's when they recorded it.
Like many of their songs, there's a double meaning. It's a song about both emotional violence, and terrorism. The lyrics about a parked car, clockwork and cold steel, death without a call or warning, are about car bombs.
Wow. I'm not familiar with U2's work (almost unimaginable I know, given their prominence), but as a guitarist I've been quite aware of Edge's innovative playing. I just didn't realise how beautiful his voice was/is. Incredibly impressive.
ZOO TV Live version of this song is unbelievably good. Honestly you are truly missing out by being unfamiliar with U2 as they have so many great songs. Achtung Baby is the album this song is off; and it just may be U2's best album. Each song is amazing.
Edge's voice doesn't compare to Bono's voice. This voice is stable and he sings so very musically . He is never out of tune , sings lines , legato's . He is a wonderful musician.
Crimsonphilosophy I always think that myself, he sang Numb on Zooropa. But that was a good good while ago. Also I think, would he ever do a solo album. He did the soundtrack on the film captive . A lot of famous guitar players so some solo stuff, John Fruciante don't know how to spell that !! And others but he maybe just wants to remain in a band with them all being best mates so that's probably why
Edge is the most underrated guitarist but an absolute gem in the hiding. His guitar playing oozes a passion that nobody can beat. Simply love him ❤️❤️❤️
I have loved U2 since 81 and they get better as time goes by. Fell madly in love with this song since I do love dirge!! Passion oozes with chord and vocal sound.
Seanachie's Court The Irish and Welsh musical influences is clearly a brilliant combination. Great and surprising performance vocally from the Edge. The acoustic guitar sounded really beautiful as well.
True! The Edge has got a great voice....I'd never heard him sing before....how???? He should sing more often. Maybe get Bono to share more of the singing on any future U2 albums (assuming there will be more to come?). Btw, not saying Bono shouldn't sing lol, just that when you have a guitarist who's got a good voice, you should use him more to support both you the lead singer, and a particular song.
Amazing solo performance and amazing acoustic guitar solo. This song is about The Edge's divorce so you can see his emotions in there. The Edge oozes talent in everything. He is one of the greatest guitarist, a great song writer, composer, pianist and also vocalist.
I can't even emote clearly about this only ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ x a gazillion. I sat my ma down today to watch it and she's one of these ppl who never shuts up and I don't think she even breathed from first to last note. I don't think I've ever heard her go so silent in my life, totally under Edge's spell. Just beyond beautiful and amazing and breaks my heart (in a good way) on every watch or listen. God bless ya Edge the world is a bit of a better place for you being in it x
Did he write this? it really hit me wow what simple yet powerful and profound lyrics they cut like a knife beautiful singing and as always superlative playing edge is one talented guy
That is without doubt one of the best performances I’ve ever seen’ The Edge is to me what Jimi Hendrix was to a generation of musicians in the 1960’s.. absolute genius
this shows how integral Edge's voice is in the overall sound of U2..Bono is amazing...dont' get me wrong, but the two as a unit are a whole that cannot be seperated
the complicated reason I'm listening to this right now. I was listening to Amy Winehouse "I heard love is blind" (a title that always reminds me of this amazing tune, that I particularly love)…and all comments were so full of anger against someone it shocked me. No respect at all for the artist, so I decided to turn on this track to read the comments. Really. Just to read something nice about a great artist. Music should be about this. Love. Passion. Commitment. Thank you for this amazing piece of your soul, man. Love to all U2 fans.
+The Music of The Night They have a similar vocal range. The Edge's voice is a little thinner. Larry Mullen can actually sing also but he rarely does. He sang a drinking song acapella in a concert in Philly I saw back in the early 90's.
Very sad song. Reminds me of a previous marriage, where my wife was an alcoholic that was having an affair. We got divorced, and I felt there was no more hope. Years later, I met the love of my life. Got married to my new wife a few years ago. I love life now.
This past weekend, on Sunday night, May 29th 2022, I found "my" person on the couch (that was a gift from my family) with another person, wearing only a blanket, with clothes on the floor. This brings me here.
@@revolutionunderground hope you’re doing fine, life goes on. What goes around comes around, let go and move on. Life is beautiful without trash in life 😃
+Carmen Vasconcelos Also Bono's voice has been greatly effected by the fact that he smokes... Which his why he sounded more clear on the earlier records. You can start to hear the smoking around The Joshua Tree and it was very noticeable by Achtung Baby.
