Someone else's comment on the original version of this song: "The lyrics of The Wanderer tells the story of a preacher who embarks on a personal journey and embraces all that the world offers: Love, knowledge, money, etc, in fact the preacher is Johnny Cash that is looking for God, the lyrics encompass an apocalyptical future, Bono said that both worked in the composition of this song in Dublin, this song was inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the books of The Holy Bible, he said that they had decided to call it the preacher but finally decided to call it the wanderer, this is more than an excellent song, this one is a masterpiece..!." Putting it here so people can know more about the song and its origin.
I absolutely love this song.. its a great tribute to Johnny. Since U2 respected him, so much. Edge sounded great, always loves his voice, Great tribute U2.. Hats off to you, all
I would've liked to see Johnny Cash perform this live with U2. That would have been so cool. But, this version is incredible none the less. I like how many musical avenues U2 moves in & out of. That's why they've been around for so long. Simply, Superb musicianship by the entire band collectively. Timeless.
This song reminds me when I went looking for my brothers body . He was killed and it gives ya the chills to hear this loved the man in black and U2.Thanks For that tribute. My brother a guy like Johnny Cash. Could tell you a great story. Have fun up there you both. I like to see who talk more.
NON CREDEVO CHE JHONNY CASH AVESSE COSÌ TANTI AMMIRATORI FINO A QUALCHE ANNO FA POCO CONOSCIUTO IN ITALIA MENTRE ADESSO ANCHE GIOVANI E GIOVANISSIMI LO AMANO R.I.P. GRANDE CANTAUTORE
Beautiful song , one of my personal favorites of John's. I like this that much more because U2 are doing it (Mr. Phoenix sums it up much better than I could even begin to try). Great tribute by a legendary band for "The Man in Black"....R.I.P. ..Johnny, you are missed so very much. Thanks for this post...one of a kind.
Johnny Cash's music and performances have always been so powerful. Now we have a respected group showing proper tribute to a master of songwriting and performance. Thank you U2!
leaders ,gov't officials should be sat down and listen to original version as a corruption detector to see if any of them are still really human way down in there.
I went out walking through the streets paved with gold Lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones Of a city without a soul I went out walking under an atomic sky Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns Like the tears when I said goodbye Yeah, I went with nothing Nothing but the thought of you I went wandering I went drifting through the capitals of tin Where men can't walk or freely talk And sons turn their fathers in I stopped outside a church house where the citizens like to sit They say they want the kingdom But they don't want God in it I went out riding, down that ol' eight lane I passed by a thousand signs Looking for my own name I went with nothing But the thought you'd be there too Looking for you I went out there in search of experience To taste and to touch and to feel's as much As a man can before he repents I went out searching, looking for one good man A spirit who would not bend or break Who could sit at his father's right hand I went out walking with a bible and a gun The word of God lay heavy on my heart I was sure, I was the one Now Jesus, don't you wait up, Jesus, I'll be home soon Yeah, I went out for the papers Told her I'd be back by noon Yeah, I left with nothing But the thought you'd be there too Looking for you Yeah, I left with nothing Nothing but the thought of you I went wandering
I love U2 BUT why did Bono change the lerics of the song? .."I went out wandering, with a bible and a gun. TO, "I went out wandering with a bible and a son" ?? WTF?
I actually wish the Edge would have sang the whole thing. Kind of like a Van Diemen's land type song. I think he would have sounded better than Bono for this song. But I know how much Johnny meant to Bono so I'm sure he really wanted to sing it.
I do think Edge has taken better care of his voice but it has always been a bit lighter than Bono's. Bono's is a bit darker than Edge even though it's not as crisp.
The most wonderful magical post apocalyptic world (?) maybe by default. Where there is no man's land, we will create harvest, where no man has eyes we will draw eyes, where no refuge to rest upon, we will rest and it will be forever and now.
fantastic song for Johnny's tribute u2brilliant wish edge had sung it bono great but this song would have been better sung by edge.this song was made for edge still brilliant though rest in peace johnny you will never be forgotten.
