Most people think this is Johnny's song, with U2 as guests. (The title of the RU-vid video suggests that this is the belief here as well "Johnny Cash feat. U2"). This is a testament to how great the song writing is. U2 wrote this with Cash in mind. At the time they did not think they would be able to get him. He had disappeared from popular music and culture (and they did not know why at the time). Major labels had left him. This was before Rick Rubin started recording with Cash (American Recordings.Hurt came later. The original NIN song was not released until 1995) This was the song that kickstarted his revival. Hurt would later launch Johnny back to mass appeal, and at the top of the charts
I would argue Johnny's rendition of Hurt is the most searingly powerful track he ever laid down. Near the end of his life, when he may have been considering his entry into eternity. The video clip shows the deep soul wounding pain of his life's regrets. Perhaps his sins. People he's hurt. Those of us who've been around for some time can relate. Regrets can be a heavy, heavy burden.
I'm always amazed how few Cash or U2 fans made it to the end of this album to hear this gem. "They say they want the Kingdom, but they don't want God in it". So true for so many.
what the fuck does that even mean. seriously, i challenge anyone who venerates either u2's vapid stadium rock and/or johnny cash's ability to say faulty aphorisms in a cool voice to explain to me just what "they say they want the kingdom, but they dont want god in it" actually means with respect to any worldview relevant past the 18th century
Is from the bible: The lord lend his kingdom to some men, then he sent his servant to charge them, but they didn't pay, instead they killed the servant, as they killed Jesus. It is in the bible, jesus told that story but I don't have the detail of what chapter.
Johnny touched heaven and hell while being alive. Thanks U2 for this masterpiece made before the Man In Black died. What a lovely smile in Johnny's face. Now I understand why June fell in love with this handsome man. Johnny and June together forever
What people fail to understand was this was the song that inspired Rick Rubin to have Johnny Cash record albums covering younger artists. This song was released in 1993 and Johnny Cash has a career resurgence in 1994 with the self titled album called CASH. It all began with this song
"I stopped outside a churchhouse, where the citizens like to sit. They say they want the kingdom, But they don't want God in it." If that's not the perfect summation of our modern era, I don't know what is.
Partly because too many Christians in the modern era seem focused on hate, anger, and exclusion instead of grace and acceptance. Making their allegiance to Trump public also didn't exactly bring in people who want to give church a try
I heard this song for the first time when I was 13 and it changed the course of my life from there on, despite me barely understanding the lyrics back then. I then spent a few decades wandering the world, to "taste and to touch, and to feel as much, as a man can, before he repents". A timeless classic.
I'm 61 yo. I always had in my mind I'd live full throttle til 40 and then I'd change my ways. I went to way past 50. I've finally settled down and got right with God, but I think He would have preferred I'd done it sooner. He loves me anyway. Like He loved me for my entire journey, it was me that didn't love me 🙌✌️❤️🩹
Wandering on a mental/physical/spiritual journey right now. It’s painful and horrible. Then this song enters my head, and I remembered the small comfort I have. The songs I listened to as a child while I was at peace (rarely). Johnny Cash’s music saved me honestly.
I'm in Hong Kong, it's 2020, and the government's grip tightens on us. This is my favorite song to walk the streets to and the soothing dignity of Johnny Cash never fails me.
Tread safely in the capitals of Tin my friend. Seriously, someone strolling through the midnight protest streets of Hong Kong with this blaring is the most red red redemption cowboy beebop awesome visual of all time.
This song is a timeless masterpiece. I just recently heard it for the first time. I’m glad that Johnny and June didn’t have to see what is happening to our country today. They’d have a few more verses to add.
The lyrics of The Wanderer tells the story of a preacher who embarks on a personal journey and embraces all that the world offers: Love, knowledge, money, etc, in fact the preacher is Johnny Cash that is looking for God, the lyrics encompass an apocalyptical future, Bono said that both worked in the composition of this song in Dublin, this song was inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes, one of the books of The Holy Bible, he said that they had decided to call it the preacher but finally decided to call it the wanderer, this is more than an excellent song, this one is a masterpiece..!.
At the time I was listening to this I was reading the Jon Shannow novels by David Gemmel. It was an amazing fit for the themes and the character in those books.
My favorite U2 song… and Bono doesn't even sing it! These are the greatest lyrics Bono has ever written and Johnny Cash makes the song perfect. What else can I say other than that this is simply amazing?
+Matthew LaTorre every song the late great man in black touches.... on a scale of 1-10 even if it was a 12 or as low as a 2, JC manages to squeeze out of it at least a 15.. his rendition of personal jesus by depeche mode took on a whole new depth of meaning when cash covered it... ..and hurt... I ball my eyes out every time i play it... that and whisky lullaby are the two saddest songs ever written imho.
I’ve been listening to this song for around 20 years. I’ve always resonated with Cash and his message. This is the one song I feel fits me more than any other song out there. We didn’t deserve Johnny Cash ❤️
Bono also wrote 'Love Rescue Me' for Bob Dylan during the Rattle & Hum days. There's a version of Dylan singing the song by himself somewhere in the U2 vault. Dylan's record company wouldn't let him release it on R&H-- But the album version does have him singing a verse or two along with the backing vocals. Bono went through a pretty amazing period from 87-94-- He wrote songs for Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash-- All of three of them were amazing tunes.
I went out walking Through streets paved with gold Lifted some stones Saw the skin and bones Of a city without a soul I went out walking Under an atomic sky Where the ground won't turn And the rain it burns Like the tears when I said goodbye Yeah I went with nothing Nothing but the thought of you I went wandering I went drifting Through the capitals of tin Where men can't walk Or freely talk And sons turn their fathers in I stopped outside a church house Where the citizens like to sit They say they want the kingdom But they don't want God in it I went out riding Down that old eight lane I passed by a thousand signs Looking for my own name I went with nothing But the thought you'd be there too Looking for you I went out there In search of experience To taste and to touch And to feel as much As a man can Before he repents I went out searching Looking for one good man A spirit who would not bend or break Who would sit at his father's right hand I went out walking With a bible and a gun The word of God lay heavy on my heart I was sure I was the one Now Jesus, don't you wait up Jesus, I'll be home soon Yeah I went out for the papers Told her I'd be back by noon Yeah I left with nothing But the thought you'd be there too Looking for you Yeah I left with nothing Nothing but the thought of you I went wandering
LIKE ALL OF HIS OTHER SONGS I LOVE THIS ONE TOO JOHNNY WAS THE BEST NEVER FAKE. YOU WILL BE MISSED BY MILLIONS BOTH YOU AND JUNE 💙 MISS Y'ALL EVERYDAY 💙
I went out walkin' Through streets paved with gold Lifted some stones saw the skin and bones Of a city without a soul I went out walkin' under an atomic sky Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns Like the tears when I said goodbye Yeah I went with nothin' Nothin' but the thought of you I went wandering I went drifting through the capitals of tin Where men can't walk or freely talk And sons turn their fathers in I stopped outside a church house Where the citizens like to sit They say, "They want the kingdom" But they don't want God in it I went out ridin' down that old eight lane I passed by a thousand signs Lookin' for my own name I went with nothin' But the thought you'd be there too Lookin' for you I went out there in search of experience To taste and to touch and to feel as much As a man can before he repents I went out searching Looking for one good man A spirit who would not bend or break Who would sit at his father's right hand I went out walking with a Bible and a gun The word of God lay heavy on my heart I was sure I was the one Now Jesus, don't you wait up Jesus, I'll be home soon Yeah I went out for the papers, told her, I'd be back by noon Yeah I left with nothin' But the thought you'd be there too Lookin' for you Yeah I left with nothin' Nothin' but the thought of you I went wanderin'
So damn rigth!!!!!! Fucking A man!!!! Zooropa was a transition album between old U2 sound and 90's new experimental sound, but U2 did it outstanding!!!! Those two albums marked my teen life (zooropa and achtung baby).
What most people miss about the meaning of this song, is that it is the final track of U2 most experimental work (Zooropa), which is a jewel in electronic experimentation for all but the last track (The Wanderer): hence, at the end of the whole listen, one is simply overwhelmed by a mesmerizing sense of melancholy and nostalgia. Genius finale by a genius (back then, not certainly - sadly - now ) band.
hi marco, yes - the last sentence of your comment is the way ive felt about U2 for a long time now , they used to be brilliant, i miss their brillianceness, oh man where did it go(?)
I listen to this song and remember crouching under our kitchen window on Sundays. My father would be playing and singing Sunday Morning Coming Down by Johnny Cash. I would crouch to hide and just listen. Both men are no longer with us. This is another Sunday when I watch/play this, think about my dad, know I'll see him in heaven and we can go to a Johnny Cash show together.
As we all know, Bono was mean't to sing this until he heard Johnny's version and immediately handed it over. Johnny a God on earth and now amongst the Gods. RIP fella.
A TALENT BIGGER THAN TIME. NOTHING WILL ERASE WHAT WAS, IS, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE. YOUR HEART MULTIPLIES EVERY DAY IN EVERY PERSON WHO STARTS LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC. CASH FOREVER!! Hugs to everyone who loves this poet, Marco- Pelotas RS Brasil. Obrigado U2.
I seat down where the citizen they like to seat... They say they want the kingdom but the do not want God in it.... GOD IS EVERYWHERE JONNY KNEW ABOUT IT
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
I don't know anyone who say anything bad about this song! Respect is given to U2 for getting the only man besides The Living Lord who could of pulled off this Tune.
sure do like it . Hear the conviction and disdain , if not contempt , when he sings ' They say they want the Kingdom , but they don't want God in it . '
This song has been playing in my head since I first heard it in the 90s. It's almost become my life theme song if there could be a thing. Going home never made any sense until I had an accident and died. I fell by a heater and hit my head. When i came back my arm was melted into the tiles and my knee was also. I had kidney failure and smoke inhalation from my own burning body. But I went somewhere when I went on conscience. It sounds crazy and people tell me that it's just a chemical my brain did, but I know it wasn't. My entire soul went somewhere else.
I always say that Johnny cash is the mysterious stranger in fallout 3. He talks about wandering the capitals of tin, and he has nothing but a bible and a gun. It's a perfect fit.
Man in black, he saw a lot of heartache but he really puts a fire in your soul with his song and voice. Great job doing this with such a legendary icon U2! Johnny was a good chunk Irish too.
One of the lyrics "Jesus dont wait up Jesus I'll be home soon" he passed away and he reunited with his wife June who also passed away few months apart❤🌷🌹
Good video with clip and scene of johnny playing music or singing and U2 in the background playing the wander and plus this black and white closer of the video Johnny we miss you and RIP
God bless you Johnny cash we all miss you so much !! The best country singer ever so sad to see all these legends leaving us but they are together in heaven playing sweet music
